Let Love Have the Last Word
Let Love Have the Last Word: A Memoir | Common
8 posts | 8 read | 1 reading | 3 to read
Commonthe Grammy Award, Academy Award, and Golden Globewinning musician, actor, and activistfollows up his New York Times bestselling memoir One Day Itll All Make Sense with this inspiring exploration of how love and mindfulness can build communities and allow you to take better control of your life through actions and words. Common believes that the phrase let love have the last word is not just a declaration; it is a statement of purpose, a daily promise. Love is the most powerful force on the planet and ultimately, the way you love determines who you are and how you experience life. Touching on God, self-love, partners, children, family, and community, Common explores the core tenets of love to help others understand what it means to receive and, most important, to give love. He moves from the personalwriting about his daughter, to whom he wants to be a better fatherto the universal, where he observes that our society has become fractured under issues of race and politics. He knows there's no quick remedy for all of the hurt in the world, but lovefor yourself and for othersis where the healing begins. Courageous, insightful, brave, and characteristically authentic, Let Love Have the Last Word shares Commons own unique and personal stories of the people and experiences that have led to a greater understanding of love and all it has to offer. It is a powerful call to action for a new generation of open hearts and minds, one that is sure to resonate for years to come.

This audible original isn‘t listed so I chose Common‘s bio.
This audible was great. Especially, if you like his music.

Meshell1313 I read this because I was obsessed with him on Hell on Wheels! 🤣 such an inspiration! 13mo
S3V3N @Meshell1313 I haven‘t seen Hell on Wheels. I‘ll have to check it out. I like him, but can‘t say that I‘m a true fan. He‘s handsome and I love his voice.😂😂 13mo

⭐️⭐️ Themed memoirs are just not my jam. I‘d rather hear a person‘s *detailed* life story; their struggles, truths, accomplishments, and failures rather than introspective and repetitive affirmations. This was just too self helpish for me. Just not what I was hoping for. Common does a nice job narrating, though. Thanks for the “skip-the-line” copy, NPL. Saved that money, honey.

🎧🐾 Walking this crazy ass before the rain hits. At 3.5 months old, Champ‘s up to a mile, 5 times a week.

Prairiegirl_reading @britt_brooke I think it took about a year for my dog to sleep at night. 🤦🏻‍♀️ it was awful! 4y
britt_brooke @Prairiegirl_reading Oh no! That‘s worse than an infant. 4y
Prairiegirl_reading @britt_brooke I can‘t really compare because I don‘t have kids but that‘s what I hear. We would have a play date with another dog and after 15 minutes their pawrents would say “well they‘ll sleep good tonight.” I would always just smile because no we still had to take Sadie for an hour long walk and still not sleep. 😕 4y
britt_brooke @Prairiegirl_reading Oh dang. I feel for you. That had to be rough! Even my two babies slept all night after a couple of months. 4y

Common shares what life has taught him about love in every sense of the word. He writes from a place of humility and openness. While I understand that this is a memoir, it felt too introspective, as if each chapter was a journal entry. While others may connect more with this format, it was a bit too circular for me. I think this would be better as an audiobook, and while it fell flat for me, we can all benefit from the overall message.

britt_brooke Accurate review. 💯 4y

Very well written. He doesn't have answers, he's trying to figure out out like the rest of us. He's honest and willingly bars his mistakes for all to see.

"But if you think of love as a verb, an action, then the sentence becomes a promise for action, stipulating your commitment to that other person in the moment, in that day, to act with love, in love, anchored with clear and positive intent."
