Most Dangerous Animal of All: Searching for My Father . . . and Finding the Zodiac Killer
Most Dangerous Animal of All: Searching for My Father . . . and Finding the Zodiac Killer | Gary L Stewart
When Gary L. Stewart decided to search for his biological father at the age of thirty-nine, he never imagined his quest would lead him to a horrifying truth and force him to reconsider everything he thought he knew about himself.Written with award-winning author and journalist Susan Mustafa, The Most Dangerous Animal of All tells the story of Stewart's decade-long hunt. While combing through government records and news reports and tracking down relatives and friends, Stewart turns up a host of clues--including forensic evidence--that conclusively identifies his father as the Zodiac Killer, one of the most notorious and elusive serial murderers in history. At last, all the questions that have surrounded the case for almost fifty years are answered in this riveting narrative--a singular work of true crime at its finest as well as a sensational and powerful memoir.

I have really enjoyed delving into True Crime books with my library‘s digital app. This was not my favorite though. Stewart‘s belief that his birth father was the Zodiac was an interesting perspective for the book, but it became very preachy, especially toward the end. The narrator of this particular audio book also sounded bored at normal pace, but really odd if I tried to speed it up.

I agree with what others have said in regards to this book. It‘s all very compelling but it seems also fantastic in some ways, putting a square peg in a round hole in some cases.

When learning the identity of his birth parents, Gary Stewart discovered a creepy, criminal birth father whom he became convinced was the Zodiac killer. This book is compellingly written and highly readable but very problematic. He fails to account for his own confirmation bias, does not acknowledge the use of some questionable forensic techniques, and presents the Zodiac murders as factually committed by his father, which is by no means proven.

Texreader Thanks for an excellent and insightful review. 4y
Megabooks Agreed. Great review. Confirmation bias is a bitch. 4y

This book is 335 pages long. I read it in one sitting. I ordered Jimmy John's for lunch because I didn't want to put it down to fix something. Easily one of the best true crime books I've ever read. I went in with a healthy dose of scepticism and left with my mind blown. Although I'm not completely convinced, Stewart makes a pretty good circumstantial case. A must read for anyone who likes fascinating/crazy nf like Monster of Florence

vivastory Have you read this one @Cinfhen @Reviewsbylola ? 4y
Reviewsbylola Damn, you‘ve got me excited. Stacking! 4y
vivastory @Reviewsbylola I look forward to your thoughts! There's a recent fx docuseries based on it. I plan on watching it this week. 4y

vivastory @Cinfhen I'm looking forward to your thoughts! I know some people on Goodreads are a little bit sceptical, but I've seen people convicted on lesser circumstantial evidence. It's a pretty fascinating book! 4y
Cinfhen It‘s pricey on #BookDepository so now it‘s off to check my online sources 🤞🏽 4y
Hooked_on_books I loved the Monster of Florence! Luckily, my library has this one on audio, so I just put it on hold. Excellent sell. 4y
Leftcoastzen There is a FX documentary based on this book. 4y
vivastory @Hooked_on_books Thanks! I'll be curious to see what you think. 4y
vivastory @Leftcoastzen That's what caught my interest. I looked up the book and saw the Jeff Guinn blurb & immediately put it on hold at the library. Planning on watching the fx docuseries this week. Also curious about their series based on Errol Morris 4y
Leftcoastzen Knew of the case but not book & doc . Thx for sending me down the rabbit hole!😂 4y
vivastory @Leftcoastzen When I picked up Most Dangerous Animal, I also checked out the Morris. So I'll also be going down the rabbit hole 😂 4y
MynameisSnow Surprised my library doesn‘t have this! Sounds good and I know nothing bout the Zodiac killer ( probably for the best) lol 4y
LeahBergen Ooo! I‘ll have to check this out! 4y

Heavy on speculation and meaningless, random details and light on facts. And, oh man, the audiobook narration is pretty bad. The author speaks soooooo slllooooowly.

I just came back from camping in Kern County not so long ago and while I was up there, I managed to read a few books such as Gary Stewart‘s The Most Dangerous Animal of All. It‘s saddening and shocking to think that one person was outthinking basically all the people who were investigating his case and crimes

Hmmm. Still thinking about this one.

Kaye Don't you think it's a bit fishy that so many people want to claim these serial killers as their dads? It seems more of a publicity stunt and money maker more than anything else. Trouble is there's no way to prove it unless they have DNA laying around that can still be tested. I haven't heard any of them that have been truthful. 7y
Kristy_K @Kaye I agree with you. There are so many books out there where someone claims they definitively know who the Zodiac Killer (or others) are. Yet the cases never get closed or solved. 7y
Kaye Yep, sadly, some of these cases may never have a resolution. The people involved, including the killer, cops, investigators, reporters....they'll all be gone with no one left to figure it out. The Zodiac may end up being America's Jack the Ripper. 7y

I am not sure how to rate this book. I cannot believe this guy and the seriously narcissistic need to prove that he is the son of the Zodiac Killer. His journey into self discovery is at the cost of every relationship and my patience. Couldn't wait for it to be over.
