The Man in the Picture
The Man in the Picture: A Ghost Story | Susan Hill
9 posts | 20 read | 21 to read
A mysterious depiction of masked revellers at the Venice carnival hangs in the college rooms of Oliver's old professor in Cambridge. On this cold winter's night, its eerie secret is revealed by the ageing don. The dark art of the Venetian scene, instead of imitating life, has the power to entrap it. To stare into the painting is to play dangerously with the unseen demons it hides, and become the victim of its macabre beauty ...

Kicking off my spooky season reads (late) with this one. I loved The Woman in Black and didn't care for The Most in the Mirror.

So far, I'm really liking this one.

It‘s the second book of this author I‘ve read. The writing style doesn‘t vibe with me. I find my attention wandering around the stiff, outdated (or stylized as such) word choice and grammar constructions. Would‘ve been OK if the tension held me, but it didn‘t. Clearly, this author is not for me.

2.0/5

The story was told to me by my old tutor Theo Parmitter as we sat beside the fire in his college rooms one bitterly cold January night.

A good, typically creepy and atmospheric ghost story by Susan Hill. If this is what her ghost stories are like, then I'm in! Best read in one breathless gulp!

LeahBergen I love her ghost stories! 7y
LauraBrook @LeahBergen Yay! I trust your opinion, we seem to have similar interests, and no one I know IRL has read (or more likely even heard of) her. I have 3 more of her books on my TBR shelf, though I don't know what they're about. Except for the one, which is about Rebecca and Mrs deWinter. 7y

In DMV hell waiting to renew my license. Ugh.

Mdargusch Good thing you have a book. 😊 There has to be a better way. 7y
KilgoreTrout Sometimes I actually long for waiting rooms nowadays, such good reading time!! 7y
Lcsmcat But at least it's an excuse to read. 7y

LauraBrook @Mdargusch Right? I filled out a form online and brought it in, which helped, but still. @KilgoreTrout @Lcsmcat I was so thankful I remembered to put a new book in my purse! And all of the employees were nice, which was a wonderful surprise! 7y
Hobbinol An expiring drivers license can really spoil a good birthday-high. 7y
LauraBrook @Hobbinol Very true. I was determined not to get stuck there on the actual day, but there were quite a few "happy birthday"s overheard in the waiting area. I'm planning on not leaving the house on my bday! 7y

When in doubt, reread a great book.

Laura317 Sounds deliciously creepy and weird. And as a plus, has a piece of art as a character! 8y

#FunFridayPhoto I have to say that, like @Liberty , my favourite college-set novel is most definitely The Secret History. Another pick? This freaky little ghost story set at Cambridge. When a former student comes to visit his old prof, he is told the story of an odd painting in the room, one that just might be haunted by the spirit of a previous, vengeful owner.

BookBabe Whoa! This book has art AND ghosts? Count me in! 😍🎨👻 8y
LeahBergen @BookBabe Yes! Save it for a chilly autumn evening - it's a fun little read. 8y
[DELETED] 2232195534 Susan Hill does some serious creepy stuff, plus I love her Simon Serrailler mystery series! Have not read this one yet. 😱 8y
LeahBergen @kaysreadinglife I love all of her creepy stuff but haven't tried her mysteries. I should! 8y
BookishFeminist Oo this looks great! Love creepy books. 8y
