THE HANDMAID'S TALE | MARGARET ARWOOD

The keynote speech at the [Booker] prize ceremony in London was given by Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, who was released from prison in Tehran, Iran, last year....

“One day a cellmate received a book through the post; it was The Handmaid‘s Tale by Margaret Atwood, translated into Farsi,” she said. “Who thought a book banned in Iran could find its way to prison through the post?”

Reggie That‘s amazing. 5mo
charl08 @Reggie isn't it! Made me want to send some parcels. (That's as far as I got. ) 5mo

Much tamer than the tv series- I couldn‘t finish it (#delicateflower). Still very disconcerting and worrisome. I didn‘t expect it to end so abruptly and kind of wanted it to continue on. #bookdump2

My beautiful Folio Society edition of The Handmaid‘s Tale. I‘m reading it now, and I‘m blown away! Why did it take me so long to get around to reading this?

I am so finally glad to have read this great, powerful and disturbing book. I put it off as I was rather nervous about it. It is certainly a thought provoking story. I liked how it went back and forth to learn how the US government was taken over and to see how Offred's life was before. The ending is really a cliffhanger!! I have The Testaments too, so will read that in July.

Nute Looks like I need to buy another edition of this book. Love that cover!🙂 3y
emmaturi Yes, it is stunning! @Nute 3y

I have been wanting to read this for SO long and with ‘Testaments‘ coming out tomorrow, I couldn‘t have finished this at a better time. It‘s not a usual read for me and at some points I zoned out. But the storyline and the way it‘s written is so lovely. The ending is a HUGE cliffhanger!!!

While I thought it was a good book, it left a lot to be desired. I feel like a lot of “whys” and “how‘s” we‘re left unanswered. Margaret Atwood writes beautiful, but it is a little confusing at times.

CollapsingLibrary I felt the same way. It‘s talked about like it‘s this amazing, ground breaking piece of feminist literature (at least in my literary circles) and it was turned into a hit tv show, so I had great expectations. However, like you said, it left a lot to be desired and I almost felt like I was missing something by the time I was done reading 5y
Baiforthedai @hjreviews exactly. I feel like it could have been the “an amazing, ground breaking piece of feminist literature” that it was portrayed to be, but it wasn‘t. It fell very flat to me. I probably would have liked it more if everyone hadn‘t built it up so much. (edited) 5y
CollapsingLibrary @Baiforthedai definitely agree 5y

RaimeyGallant It's weird reading this, because we're not given a key aspect about the reason for the narrative until the end. And welcome to Litsy! #LitsyWelcomeWagon Some of us put together Litsy tips to help new Littens navigate the site. It's the link in my bio on my page in case you need it. I finished with more questions than answers. Let‘s just say I‘m happy I didn‘t read this book until now, because I don‘t know how long I‘d be able to wait for the sequel!
