Until the Night
Until the Night | Giles Blunt
4 posts | 2 read | 10 to read
It's not unusual for John Cardinal to be hauled out of a warm bed on a cold night in Algonquin Bay to investigate a murder. And at first this dead body, sprawled in the parking lot of Motel 17, looks pretty run of the mill: the corpse has a big bootprint on his neck, and the likely suspect is his lover's outraged husband. But the lover has gone missing. And then Delorme, following a hunch, locates another missing woman, a senator's wife from Ottawa, frozen in the ruins of an abandoned hotel way back in the woods. Spookily, she was chained up and abandoned wearing a new winter parka and boots, with a thermos beside her--as if her murderer was giving her a whisper of a chance at survival. Neither Delorme nor Cardinal can imagine where their investigation will lead: into a decades-old injustice committed in the high Arctic; into the swingers' world inhabited by an ex-rock star who owns a pub in Algonquin Bay as well as private members' clubs in Toronto and Ottawa; into the insecurity that afflicts Delorme the woman and the cop; and into the deep bond between Delorme and Cardinal, which is at real risk of coming undone. In Until the Night, Giles Blunt outdoes himself, creating a masterpiece of crime fiction that will not only haunt his fans and readers, but delight and amaze them too.

Mehso-so

Maybe it‘s me but lately every book I read that‘s part of a series I‘m disappointed in. This was no exception. On a happier note: my orchid is in bloom.

Chrissyreadit It‘s gorgeous! 4y

Forgot my current read; fortunately I keep a car book for emergencies.

AlaMich Ha! A car book...I like that! 4y
Buechersuechtling @AlaMich I had that, too, for a while but then noticed that I was unable to follow that car book‘s story because I too seldom read in it. 4y
AlaMich @Buechersuechtling yeah, I do wonder about that, especially because I have a terrible memory. 4y

Buechersuechtling @AlaMich maybe a book with short stories or a collection of funny cartoons serves the purpose of a car book better than a novel. – Only problem for me: I neither like short stories nor those collections of cartoon a great deal. ☺️ 4y
AlaMich @Buechersuechtling I have some books on my phone. I don‘t read on my phone typically, but it‘s great when I‘m caught without anything else. 4y
Shemac77 I keep one in the car in case I‘ve finished whatever I have or forget my current read. It‘s usually something from my TBR stack. I end up including it in my regular rotation then finding another car book for emergencies. @AlaMich @Buechersuechtling 4y
AlaMich @Shemac77 Well that makes sense! 4y

Pickpick

After I binge-watched the first 2 seasons of Cardinal (so good, atmospheric and dark like The Killing), I had to satiate my craving for more. Luckily, the series is based on, you guessed it, books! While waiting for season 3, I jumped to book 6, and my mind was blown by chapter 14. The writing has a literary bent, and the story is so creative. The author has written for Law & Order, and has a Silver Dagger and an Arthur Ellis Award under his belt.

julesG More than one book? I love the show. Should I start with the first book? 6y
RaimeyGallant @julesG The first book is based on the first season, so it's up to you. I know the seasons skipped one of the books but I can't remember which one. This book is super duper worth the read, for sure. 6y
julesG Stacked. All I now need is a course in speed reading. 😉 6y

Agentfalco I too loved the TV show but I found the stories quite disturbing not sure I‘d want to read them in graphic detail 😳 6y
RaimeyGallant @Agentfalco Good point. This last book isn't disturbing in the way I think you mean. Not sure about the first ones. I imagine the first book might be. 6y
TheBookStacker Where can you watch it? I‘m intrigued 6y
gradcat Yay! I, too, loved that tv series, for the same reasons. 6y
RaimeyGallant @gradcat It's pretty great. :) 6y
Crazeedi Yep this is the series I started. Will have to get back to it! 6y
RaimeyGallant @Crazeedi Now you get to watch the show, too! 6y
Crazeedi @RaimeyGallant I didn't even know there was a show, tells you how much I watch TV 6y
Anna40 Thanks for recommending this! Started watching: great characters, suspenseful story but creepy and very dark ... definitely binge material :) what are the books like? 6y
RaimeyGallant @Anna40 My pleasure. I only read book six, and the prose is high caliber. :) 6y
