Pickpick

I‘m realizing when I‘m home, between mom-bus & work & dinner/kitchen duty, #FridayHappyReadingHour isn‘t chill book time. However, I do leaf through cookbooks, like this one recently sent to me by in-laws. So many of the words are puzzling since it‘s olde English! Many of the recipes I will take a hard pass on, like “How to make a calf‘s head pie.”😝

Aims42 😳🤢 Oof. I‘d pass on that recipe too LOL 1mo
Ruthiella Does it have a recipe for mushroom catsup? 😂 (edited) 1mo

I just signed up for a “Domestic Skills Symposium” at a living history museum where I‘ll be making recipes from this 1774 book and cooking/baking in a brick oven and in cast iron over an open fire. I thought I‘d get a head start and read some of Mrs. Glasse‘s cookery book. It‘s so interesting, from the sample course menus for each month to the very specific instructions on how to tell if meat is fresh.

CoffeeNBooks That is so cool! What a neat experience! 7y
AlaMich Good lord, when you see how many dishes were served in a meal you understand why they needed so many servants! 7y
Chocamanda This reminds me of Lords and Ladels on Netflix! If you haven‘t seen it, you should check it out 7y
PatriciaU @Chocamanda I will have to check that out! 7y
LeahBergen That sounds amazing! 7y

Once upon a time, I worked at a historic park where I demonstrated both 18th & 19th century cooking (among many other things). On a winter's day, it was great to come into work and unbank my coals and get a good fire going. Fresh bread, fire-roasted coffee beans freshly ground, newly churned butter, a savory pie and a good book. I didn't think life could get any better... and in many ways it hasn't. #cookbooklove
