At the Wolf's Table
At the Wolf's Table: A Novel | Rosella Postorino
The internationally bestselling novel based on the untold true story of the women conscripted to be Hitlers food tasters. "They called it the Wolfsschanze, the Wolfs Lair. 'Wolf' was his nickname. As hapless as Little Red Riding Hood, I had ended up in his belly. A legion of hunters was out looking for him, and to get him in their grips they would gladly slay me as well." Germany, 1943: Twenty-six-year-old Rosa Sauers parents are gone, and her husband Gregor is far away, fighting on the front lines of WWII. Impoverished and alone, she makes the fateful decision to leave war-torn Berlin to live with her in-laws in the countryside, thinking shell find refuge there. But one morning, the SS come to tell her she has been conscripted to be one of Hitlers tasters: three times a day, she and nine other women go to his secret headquarters, the Wolfs Lair, to eat his meals before he does. Forced to eat what might kill them, the tasters begin to divide into The Fanatics, those loyal to Hitler, and the women like Rosa who insist they arent Nazis, even as they risk their lives every day for Hitlers. As secrets and resentments grow, this unlikely sisterhood reaches its own dramatic climax. Whats more, one of Rosas SS guards has become dangerously familiar, and the war is worsening outside. As the months pass, it becomes increasingly clear that Rosa and everyone she knows are on the wrong side of history.

When you lose someone, the pain you feel is for yourself, the pain that you‘ll never see them again, never hear their voice again, that without them, you‘ll never make it. Pain is selfish. As I lay amid her clothes, the vastness of that tragic end revealed itself in its entirety. It was an unbearable event that drowned out pain, engulfed it, expanded until it occupied every centimeter of the universe, became proof of what mankind was capable of.

Even little children knew it. If you misbehave, I‘ll send you to Dachau, parents threatened. Dachau in place of the boogeyman; Dachau, the place of the boogeyman.

The pregnancy had been a mistake. There was nothing divine in creating life or taking it—it was simply something humans did.

I never, ever thought I‘d quote Arendt in description if a novel, but the “banality of evil” kept running through my mind as I read AT THE WOLF‘s TABLE.

The first half to 2/3 of this book is extremely powerful. I found rest of the book disappointing.

#FebruaryReads : 6 books which is not great compated to my regular average.
What is great is that without meaning to, I only read books by women this month.
My absolute favorite was Small Great Things : best Jodi Picoult book I've read so far.

The story is inspired by real life taster Margot Wolk who passed in 2014.

The protagonist of the story is Rosa, who lives with her in-laws while her husband fights in the war when she's selected to be Hitler's taste tester. Questionable decisions are made along the way. The story touches on guilt, fear, love, relationships, rape, & infidelity. Although translated, Postorino's writing still comes across as simple, yet poetic & elegant.

So I know I've been reading this book forever now, but I'm determined to finish it tonight or tomorrow! It's really good, I just haven't been great with physical books lately. It is about the women used as Hitler's food tasters during WWII.

Speaking of food tasters, my roomie made banana fritters & she always uses me as a guinea pig. I did however make the chocolate peanut butter drizzle...because of who I am as a person. 😂

It's been awhile since I won a Goodreads giveaway, but it's happened! 🎊🎉

I've been somewhat avoiding reading any WWII based reads lately bexause they're emotional reads, but this one intrigued me. It is about a woman who is conscripted along with 9 other women to be Hitler's taste testers.
