WINNER OF CBC CANADA READS This book beat out work by Douglas Coupland and Will Ferguson because it is very, very good--a terrific Canadian political satire. Heres the set up: A burnt-out politcal aide quits just before an election--but is forced to run a hopeless campaign on the way out. He makes a deal with a crusty old Scot, Angus McLintock--an engineering professor who will do anything, anything, to avoid teaching English to engineers--to let his name stand in the election. No need to campaign, certain to lose, and so on. Then a great scandal blows away his opponent, and to their horror, Angus is elected. He decides to see what good an honest M.P. who doesnt care about being re-elected can do in Parliament. The results are hilarious--and with chess, a hovercraft, and the love of a good woman thrown in, this very funny book has something for everyone. From the Trade Paperback edition.

I read the sequel the High Road first, years ago and loved it! I have been meaning to read this book and I wasn‘t disappointed. I love all the characters deeply. It makes me want to read the High Road again. It‘s funny, lighthearted, informative and very Canadian. I read it in 2 days. Delightful book.

I know nothing about Canadian politics, but my friend recommended this to me, and it won #CanadaReads back in 2011.

This book was definitely funny! There were lots of laugh out loud moments - the author has mastered the art of a clever turn of phrase.

Angus McClintock is the best. I wish every politician was like him - people who don't necessarily WANT to be in politics, but who are smart, honest, and straightforward, no matter the opposition.

I enjoyed this book so much. @janeycanuck recommended to me sometime last year and it's just wonderful. It was incredibly warm and witty.

I was getting envious of the cute posts on here people were posting of their books with little strings of lights. So I bought some lights. I'm such a sheep. 🐑.

Terry Fallis has received the Stephen Leacock for humour and it is obvious why. This book is so witty and well written that I chuckled and laughed out loud all the way through. One of the main characters is a real character himself and a grammar nazi which I thoroughly enjoyed. Although this book had just a little more (Canadian) politics than I normally would like, it is a very enjoyable read.

This book is about a cantankerous Scottish engineering professor who reluctantly agrees to RUN for the Liberals in a no-hope riding, only because he knows he won't win.

This was adapted into a miniseries on CBC. If only they could have got Peter Capaldi to play Angus. He has the accent AND the wild hair 😂

#anditsaugust day 20: running and jumping

LauraBrook I'd watch the hell out of that Capaldi version! 7y
rabbitprincess @LauraBrook It would be awesome. And I would insist on them coming to Ottawa to film 😉 7y
