Middlemarch (Annotated)
Middlemarch (Annotated): Complete Eight Books | George Eliot
7 posts | 6 read | 4 to read
Middlemarch: Complete Eight Books By George Eliot, first published in 1874. Mary Ann Evans (1819-1880, also "Mary Anne" or "Marian"), known by her pen name George Eliot, was an English novelist, journalist, translator and one of the leading writers of the Victorian era. Middlemarch, is her seventh novel, begun in 1869 and then put aside during the final illness of Thornton Lewes, the son of her companion George Henry Lewes. During the following year Eliot resumed work, fusing together several stories into a coherent whole, and during 1871-72 the novel appeared in serial form. The first one-volume edition was published in 1874, and attracted large sales. The novel is set in the fictitious Midlands town of Middlemarch during the period 1830-32. It has multiple plots with a large cast of characters, and in addition to its distinct though interlocking narratives it pursues a number of underlying themes, including the status of women, the nature of marriage, idealism and self-interest, religion and hypocrisy, political reform, and education.

1: I do read them. Lately I‘ve been reading more contemporary work though.
2: Several. I‘m in the middle of Emma right now and want to finish it. I also want to read Middlemarch and Walden.

TheSpineView Thanks for playing! Happy reading!🧡📖 2y
Ruthiella Middlemarch is fantastic! 😃 2y
KathyWheeler @Ruthiella I don‘t have any idea why I keep quitting it. This may be my “I‘m finally going to read this” book this year. Last year, it was The Grapes of Wrath; before that it was Moby Dick. I ended up loving both. 2y
Mindyrecycles I adore Middlemarch. I read it then some months later, I audioed it. 🙂 2y
KathyWheeler @Mindyrecycles I‘ve been thinking about audio for it but I may do that later. 2y

I remember when I first learned that women needed pen names to be published. It was my literal first understanding of the patriarchy. https://www.womensprizeforfiction.co.uk/reading-room/for-readers/reclaim-her-nam...

candority This is so cool! What beautiful editions too. 4y
Chrissyreadit @candority they are available for free downloads through the link. 4y

You can tell by how I‘ve worn the design off the cover that I‘ve spent just a little bit of time with this novel. I savored it. Loved the portrait into the lives of different people and how it discussed class, medicine, science, politics, women‘s roles in society, and love. I loved it!

BookBelle84 I read this years ago and still think of it often. 4y
batsy Such a great book! Meant to be relished and savoured ❤️ 4y
Palimpsest @Bookbelle84 I‘m sure this is one I will think of often as well! 😊 4y
Palimpsest @batsy Agreed! I‘m so glad I finally took the time to read it. 😊 4y

A slow burn, but beautiful book set in the #bucolic British Midlands.

SamAnne I read Mill on the Floss earlier this year and while I liked it, I wished I had chosen Middlemarch instead. Maybe this winter. 4y
OriginalCyn620 Loved this book! 4y
Cuilin @SamAnne I haven't read Mill on the Floss yet. It's sitting on shelf somewhere. I think the only other book I've read by George Eliot is Silas Marner. (edited) 4y

I recently answered a question on here if I read outside in summer. Usually, no, but today it is 73 degrees Fahrenheit, breezy, and beautiful! Tomorrow it‘s supposed to hit 90. I haven‘t posted a book review in awhile because I‘m reading Middlemarch and Im only a third of the way through. Enjoying it immensely!

Leftcoastzen Nice! It‘s very hot where I live so it‘s mostly spring outdoor reading for me. A nice, mild day is always something to savor! 4y

batsy Breezy and beautiful sounds perfect. Glad to hear you're enjoying Middlemarch 💕 4y
Palimpsest @sprainedbrain another Litten is reading Middlemarch and as I told her I love how the sentences are exquisitely written and so much feeling is told about what the characters feel with a look or small inference. I already have some favorite passages. @batsy I‘m thinking this might become a favorite book! 😊 4y
andrew61 I finished it at the weekend and loved it, it is such a beautifully crafted book with great sensitivity for the characters, and i loved the footnotes - enjoy ☺ 4y

My Sunday morning reading spot on my verandah. It‘s a glorious day with clear blue sky‘s and that slight chill in the air that I love. I am plowing through Middlemarch and enjoying it. It‘s my second attempt at it.. it comes with so many recommendations and it‘s set in the 1800‘s which I love reading about.
Happy Sunday. I hope you get to do some reading😘😘 #19thcenturyliterature

Palimpsest I‘m currently reading Middlemarch for the first time. I‘m about a third of the way into it. So many of the sentences are exquisitely written and the feelings of the characters that are often conveyed with few words or a certain look that I feel George Eliot can wield particularly well. 4y
CaliforniaCay This looks so peaceful 😌💚 4y
Freespirit @palimpsest Yes the descriptions are wonderful... I love the language of the 18th century. Let me know how it goes..I am up to page 250....we can compare notes💕 4y

Because I just finished Middlemarch recently - and am very much obsessed with it now - I was delighted to learn that there is a modern day web series adaptation. Guess what I‘ll be binging this week (and probably beyond... its 70 episodes 😄)

https://www.newyorker.com/culture/cultural-comment/middlemarch-gets-winningly-ad...

Soubhiville 70 episodes?!?! Let us know what you think of it. 5y
Eyelit @Soubhiville I‘m ten episodes in (they range from 4-10 minutes) and am really enjoying it! 5y
sprainedbrain I had no idea about this, and I love Middlemarch. Thank you for sharing! (edited) 5y
Eyelit @sprainedbrain I just finished the series (apparently I have no self control) and it‘s pretty good. Obvs a lot was cut (because there are only 10 actors total I think), but the general story and themes come through in the update, methinks. Hope you enjoy! 5y
