Seventy-Seven Clocks
Seventy-Seven Clocks: A Peculiar Crimes Unit Mystery | Christopher Fowler
14 posts | 14 read | 5 to read
The odd couple of detectionthe brilliant but cranky detectives of Londons Peculiar Crimes Unitreturn in a tense, atmospheric new thriller that keeps you guessing until the final page. This time Bryant and May are up against a series of bizarre murders that defy human understandingand a killer no human hand may be able to stop. A mysterious stranger in outlandish Edwardian garb defaces a painting in the National Gallery. Then a guest at the exclusive Savoy Hotel is fatally bitten by what appears to be a marshland snake. An outbreak of increasingly bizarre crimes has hit Londonand, fittingly, come to the attention of the Peculiar Crimes Unit. Art vandalism, an exploding suspect, pornography, rat poison, Gilbert and Sullivan musicals, secret societiesand not a single suspect in sight. The killer theyre chasing has a dark history, a habit of staying hidden, and time itself on his side. Detectives John May and Arthur Bryant may have finally met their match, and this time theyre really working against the clock. From the Paperback edition.

It‘s been 7 years since I read book 2, but this jumped out at me when I went shopping my bookshelves for my next read and I‘m so glad. This is a well-crafted, complex mystery with interesting characters. There are a few plot points that feel superfluous and unnecessary, but overall I enjoyed it. It was exactly what I wanted to read - compulsively readable without being either fluffy or oppressive.

Aimeesue Arthur and his scarf !❤️ 😂 5mo

A friend of mine recommended this series and lent me a few to start with. Seems like a pretty solid British detective series. I was a bit concerned with all the characters but I was able to keep everyone straight and follow through the twists and turns. Pretty good! #screamathon

I enjoyed the first two books in the Peculiar Crimes series - title three, though, is missing some of the charm of the previous books. There are still some interesting twists and turns without too much blood and gore. The lead detectives, Bryant and May, are memorable - this book didn‘t feature enough of them

AiBBot I thought the same thing. I have not read beyond this one yet. 5y

Mehso-so

3⭐️ and a so-so because it took me a while to get into, and Jerry, while a great character, did not strike me as 17 at all. More like early 20s.

Another fun read with the Peculiar Crimes Unit!! I just love Bryant and May. This is one that goes back to the 70's to an old crime they solved. It has a lot to do with the class system. Always have my reading buddy nearby 😍

When you manage to snag just the right spot on the bus to prop your feet up, and could happily just sit there reading well past your stop.
