I really enjoyed reading this first part of the Grey Annals. This is the material on which most of the published Silmarillion is based, still there are little details that didn't come in the final compilation, and l find those totally fascinating.

I can't believe l'm still behind with this. But today l'll try to catch up. Work is seriously killing me.

Loved to read this. The Passing of the Grey Company is one of the most chilling chapters in the book. Tolkien could write some serious horror, if he wanted!

I'm so fascinated with the idea that Aragorn could be a new 'Lord of the Ring'.

I liked this chapter because l think it showed, even more than the final book does, how central the theme of healing is for Tolkien. It almost seem that to him, a hero who can only kill and is unable to heal is not really a hero.

I am so behind with this. Crazy rhythms at work, then a horrible cold, and l fell so much behind.
But l'll catch up! 😁💪

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I was just going to ask how you were doing with this.... maybe we should push back delay the new one a bit more. 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa ^ Sorry, I should have tagged everyone @Daisey @BookwormAHN @wordslinger42 I haven‘t seen a lot of posts about the new book yet and we have one member still working on the last one....would you like me to shift the schedule back a week or two for Sauron Defeated? 4y
Daisey @jazzfeathers @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I started by reading the Foreword this past weekend, but then I "accidentally" read an entire Brandon Sanderson novel and have not gotten any further. ? I'm good with whatever the group decides. 4y

Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Daisey 😂 I love when I get sucked into a good book. So if we pushed it back a week or so, you‘d only be ahead by the Forward.👍. What Sanderson did you reread, by the way? I‘m always looking for more distractions... ummm books.😉 4y
wordslinger42 @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I've read the Foreword and the first chapter. I'm fine with pushing it back a week, though, because the launch team for my first book just started and I'm a bit overwhelmed trying to focus on that this week! 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @wordslinger42 I didn‘t know you were in the middle of launching a book! Congratulations! 4y
wordslinger42 @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Thank you!! I posted about the launch team on Litsy, but didn't get much of a response 😂 4y

4y
JazzFeathers Oh my goodness, @wordslinger42 ! If l knew about your launch, l've totally removed it. Stupid that l am. But it's quite a common occurance this time of the year 🙄 Hey, give me a shout via mail. Send me your links. I'll do my best to share 😁 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @JazzFeathers well, I‘m going to revamp the schedule. It will give you more time, but at this point none of us is up to date on the new book either. So instead of all of us playing catch-up, I‘ll just move it back and we can enjoy it together....with less rush.😉 4y
wordslinger42 @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Hahaha no worries!! I feel like I'm behind on most things right now! 😂 Changing the schedule sounds good to me!! 4y
wordslinger42 @JazzFeathers Don't worry about it! And thank you so much 😊 The launch team gets to read Part One and then share their thoughts, links to preorder, etc. If you like, I can email you part one! Or I can just send you the link to the website when it's ready next week!! Whichever is easier for you :) Thank you for being willing to help!!! 4y
BookwormAHN I haven't started yet, so I'm good with pushing it back. 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BookwormAHN Apparently we are all behind AND I forgot to even tag @eanderson so we REALLY needed at least 1 more week. 🤪 Hopefully a few more days will sync us all back up.🤞 (edited) 4y
Daisey Sounds good to me! Also, @wordslinger42, I did see your post but figured I would be overwhelmed at this point in the year. If you want to send info my way as well, I will try to fit it in! 4y
wordslinger42 @Daisey Thank you so much for being willing to help! I definitely understand this time of year being busy, so no worries at all! I can send you the link to the website nezt week 😊 Where should I send it to? 4y
wordslinger42 @Daisey You're good to delete it! Thanks!! 4y
Daisey @wordslinger42 I‘ll look forward to it. Congratulations!! 🎉 4y
Daisey @Riveted_Reader_Melissa The Sanderson is the first of a fairly new YA science fiction series, I think the only book of it published so far, called 4y
Daisey @JazzFeathers I got wrapped up in the other discussion, but I also really appreciated what you pointed out here about a hero needing to be able to heal as well as fight. Great insight! 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Daisey Ok, I know my nephew loved his YA series that started with 4y
JazzFeathers @wordslinger42 l don't think l'll be able to read part one, even if l'd love to. But do send the link when it's ready 😉 4y
JazzFeathers @Daisey Yeah, the schedule has kind of taken over 😂 l find Tolkien's concept of hero fascinating and even unique. I'd love to discuss it. But l'm sure there will be the opportunity on Sauron Defeated too 😊 4y

Denethor's character's arc is one of the most intense in the book, IMO.
Denethor is one of those awesome, but very difficult characters that Tolkien was brave enough to write, but that readers often seem to dismiss as just assholes.
Maybe l have a problem, but l really like these characters, like Turin, Morwen, Thorin, and of course my boy Feanor 😉

Really loved reading the evolution of Eowyn's story over the last few chapters.
I've always felt that the Rohirrim kind of have their story inside the story, and seeing how Tolkien wrote LotR in big chunks at a time, l can even see how this might actually be the case.

First glimpes at Arwen's appearance. Can't wait to see her coming into the story.

Really enjoyed this chapter, with that alternate story. Denethor meets Aragorn and Aragorn saved Faramir from his wounds. And Eowyn dies on the battlefield.
I do prefer the story how it ended up being, but this alternative was interesting too.

So granted, l have an extremely soft spot for the Rohirrim, and the episode of the Druadain Forest perfectly shows why.

I find it incredible how Tolkien can pull off a completely new idea in the middle of the story and that idea doesn't feel at all as if it came out of the blue, but it feels as if it has always been there, waiting for the opportune moment to come to the surface.

Storyteller's power!

wordslinger42 Yes, the Rohirrim 🐎🧡 Tolkien was so brilliant at creating depth in a story, and it seems so effortless 4y

Wow! In spite of the essencial structure of the chapter of tge Siege of Gondor was written down, there are so many interesting detail that differ from what we know.

At first, Denethor and Faramir's relationship isn't harsh. Surprised as l was, l wasn't as shock as when Gandalf said the Witch King of Angmar is a banned member of his order, back in Numenor. An idea is present that he won't be killed by a hero.

Trying to catch up. I'm so behind!
This is the second half of the Muster of Rohan as first incarnated.
I'm so interested in the evolution of Eowyn's story. From the synopses so far it looked like she was going to ride with the riders openly, like Merry, but here it seems the story is changing. I'm so very curious.

I finished the last couple chapters tonight! I‘m not sure I enjoyed this third book about LotR quite as much as the first 2 just because it felt like there was less unknown here. We saw the development of a story we know, but without the very different early possibilities seen in the previous books. Even so, I thoroughly enjoyed it and am looking forward to continuing these HoME books.

I fit in some time to read “The Houses of Healing” this evening. The paragraph at the top of this page that mentions the importance of Pippin and Merry being a part of the fellowship is what I love about this whole story. The story of the hobbits is a message about the impact that each of as individuals can have in the world.

#LotRHistory #YearsofTolkien #FellowshipofTolkien

JazzFeathers I agree. That's why l'm always put off by readers who think the Hobbits are not cool enough to be in the story. I'm sad to say that Peter Jackson unfortunately seemed to think the same. I still love the films trilogy, but the message is comletely different from the book. 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I love this part! And such a great message! 5y
Daisey @JazzFeathers @Riveted_Reader_Melissa It‘s such an amazing message, and I appreciate how much it is woven into the stories more and more as I continue to read and reread. 5y

Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Daisey That‘s where I usually see the war‘s influence, even if he never consciously intended it...everyone chipping in and doing the best they could no matter their size, shape, gender, etc...makes a difference, just the strongest warriors alone and it wouldn‘t work, it had to be a society endeavor by everyone, no matter their differences, etc. 5y
JazzFeathers @Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Daisey l agree. I've become interested in WWI lately, and honestly the more l learn, the more l see it woven into Tolkien's stories: his settings, his characters, and especially his themes. His idea that the 'common man' is special because they can do unthinkable things is one that l feel like totally embracing. 5y
JazzFeathers @Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Daisey And still it seems to me that today it gets often brush aside. Today everyone wants to be special in unearthly ways. Maybe that's way Hobbits get discredited so often. 5y

Well I spent the weekend catching up, and as I finished my section for today I realized there were just 5 pages left! Yes, I read them! And I can‘t believe that I‘ve finished another of Christopher Tolkien‘s History of Middle Earth books...something I never thought I‘d even attempt to read, but I‘m still here and still loving the backstories, side tangents, and sometimes outright sleuthing to piece together the story behind the story we know.

Daisey Yay! I was catching up last week, but then a friend loaned me the Binti books a few days ago and school has been busier this week. 5y

I continually enjoy seeing the development of the big ideas in these books, but today this small development caught my attention. Simple word revisions like changing from “You are weary, my son,” to “You are weary, I see,” accumulate to create the harsh Denethor we know.

Took me two weeks to read this chapter, and certainly it wasn't its fault. Crazy times at work.

There's a lot of work to pin down Dunharrow, one of the awesomest places in Lord of the Rings, in my opinion.
It was so different in the beginning, more like a keep.
I love the history surrounding Dunharrow. Is it my impression, or Tolkien had more trouble definire the Rohirrim than anyone else?

JazzFeathers I haven't come to that part yet, but now l really want to! Eowyn had such a huge growing arc as a character. Though l suppose we'll see more of it in the revisions. I suppose. 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I know, what a great section....and I agree, like Galadriel her character grew into so much more than he originally planned. 5y
wordslinger42 @Daisey Yeah, I suppose it's not such a surprise! But she's too good of a character to get rid of! 5y
wordslinger42 @JazzFeathers @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I'm hoping for more information about Eowyn.. and Arwen! I keep waiting for her to come up! 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @wordslinger42 I know, I keep waiting for her to appear too...at this point I‘m thinking she didn‘t emerge until rewrites later. 5y
wordslinger42 @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I hadn't thought of that! I got my copy of Sauron Defeated from the library and the chapter names definitely don't give any hints that she'll be mentioned. 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @wordslinger42 He writes such great characters, and yet it‘s funny how all the ladies snuck up on him and made themselves known, then grew into bigger than he had planned, etc. Faramir had a similar story development too. It‘s so interesting to read about the characters that surprised him as he wrote them. 5y
wordslinger42 @Riveted_Reader_Melissa It is fascinating, and I think that the characters who surprised him are often some of his best 😊 And I've always been impressed by how strong his female characters are! 5y
JazzFeathers @wordslinger42 @Riveted_Reader_Melissa l too think Arwen will probably appear in revisions. And true, eh? The characters that snuck up on him are often so interesting. And it's interesting that often they are women. I'm always so surprised that Tolkien's women are seldom acknowledged and yet they tend to be strong characters. Don't know where the legend arisen that Tolkien didn't have good female characters. 5y
wordslinger42 @JazzFeathers @Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Daisey I've heard people say that his female characters aren't strong, and I'm always frustrated when I hear that. He should be acknowledged for writing such strong women at a time when, as far as I know, that wasn't happening very often 5y
JazzFeathers I've seldom read stronger, more driven or wiser characters even in more recent books. Women in Tolkien often have stronger good quality than men (the are more determined, they often are wiser, they can see deeper and further, they are hard to deceive) and still we fans always have to defend their creator. Just craziness. 5y
Daisey @wordslinger42 @JazzFeathers @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I tend to think people get frustrated by the small number of female characters and don‘t look further. They don‘t give the amazing female characters that do exist a chance, nor do they give Tolkien the credit for what he did create in them. I would much rather have a few strong women than several that are nothing more than damsels in distress, side characters, or evil. 5y
wordslinger42 @JazzFeathers @Daisey Hear, hear! It's the quality of the characters, not the quantity. If I were still in college, I'd be writing a paper on Tolkien's female characters 😂 Oh well. I did manage to make my two final papers of senior year about Tolkien! 5y

I finally finished the “Kirith Ungol” chapter tonight. There were many interesting developments in this section, but I think the most fascinating to me was change from many spiders to one and the use of the name Ungoliant. Since first reading The Silmarillion I‘ve wondered about the connection between Ungoliant and Shelob, and this seems to confirm their similarities.

The writing was so fast and sure up to this point, and now it all became difficult for Tolkien. But it is undertandable. This is a very emotional part of the book.

I started the Faramir chapter last night and finished it tonight. I truly enjoyed the historical aspect of this chapter, although with school getting into full swing I felt a bit rushed and wish I could have read it a bit more slowly. There just aren‘t enough hours in the day right now.

Daisey @Riveted_Reader_Melissa The year is starting off pretty well, it‘s just getting used to a full schedule again, compounded by an upcoming weekend of camping with family to prep for! My reading time is definitely a quiet moment necessity in a busy week. 5y

I am really loving the insights by his letters....and realizing how much we‘ve lost as letter writing has become a bit of a lost art.

JazzFeathers True, eh? I used to write letters a lot when l was a kid. I couldn't image doing it now. It's an art that requires time and consideration. That doesn't sound like my life now... 5y

I love these little tidbits in his letter to his son, so long ago....nice to know Faramir was a lovely surprise to all of us. 😉

JazzFeathers I read this passage many times before. That's why l was surprised that another character existed before Faramir. I was under the impression Faramir had just appeared, fully forced. 5y
Daisey Loved this little passage! It‘s always fascinating to me when authors talk about how characters just make themselves known. 5y
jillrhudy Gondor needed a knight, willing to sacrifice all, and, in one of Tolkien‘s greatest masterstrokes, the greatest knight in Gondor ended up married to Eowyn, the greatest knight in Rohan. ⚔️ 5y

Well, that was fast!
l'm truly in awe that at this stage Tolkien could write such complex story with so little uncertanty. It's easy to say 'the story wrote itself", but when we're talking something as complex as LotR there's nothing simple or easy, in my opinion.

Absolutely loved this chapter. Besides, Faramir is an awesome character.
In the book, Faramir is Middle-Earth's living history. The ancient values and wisdom lives on in Faramir and it looks as if he brought part to it even to his creator, who explore Numenor's history deeper through this character.

Fantastic!

Daisey I enjoyed this chapter but just wish I had time right now to slow down and read it a bit more carefully than I did. 5y
JazzFeathers @Daisey But at a certain point, we'll reread the book, right? I think it will all ad up in the end. 5y

Happy Saturday! I started the day getting a few things done around the house, but as beautiful as it is outside, I might just spend too much of my day right here reading in the hammock. I enjoyed the discussion of letter exchanges between Christopher and his father in the last chapter and am looking forward to exploring the next couple chapters this weekend.

Chelsea.Poole Hammock reading = ♥️ 5y
JazzFeathers I read all through 'Faramir' today. Such a fascinating chapter. I like that Christopher always acts so professionale abd detached. But l love it when he is able to add personal memories to the story. 5y

I'm not surprised that the dual timeline gave such headache to Tolkien.
It made me smile that he had to research how to stew a rabbit 😆

I can't wait to read about Faramir. I didn't expect someone on his place at first, since l've always thought Faramir appeared suddenly.
Let's see.

I'm going to start now, but first...

1. To finish two of the books l'm reading/listening and read one from my #NetGalley pile
2. To finish A Duty to the Dead. It's charmed me!
3. Coffee
4. Set my click
5. Yes l mix both genre and formats, though as always l tend to stay close to my favourite genres: historical, fantasy, magic realism
6. @Riveted_Reader_Melissa

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Thanks for the tag! 5y

We could have had Bingo and Sam Goodchild! Oh no! 🙈 Thank goodness Christopher was as attached to Gamgee and Sam as we would all soon become!

So now the story 'wrote itself' and we don't get to read much about it.
But l loved reading about Christopher's letter exchange about the story (here regarding Sam's name). And it was amusing seeing Tolkien moving the chapter title Kirith Ungol later and later as the story evolved 😆
That pesky story didn't seem to have any intention to behave.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Nope, very uncooperative! And yes, their letter exchanges of the time are so interesting! 5y

I‘m a bit late reading my section tonight, but I love these little tidbits about dating based on the letters the son received from his father, and his father‘s comments about the story running away with him a bit.

These little things always make me smile.😊

JazzFeathers I loved that too. I'd like to know a lot more about Christopher involment in the writing of LotR. I have the impression that it's true that Tolkien partly wrote the story 'for him'. 5y

I always enjoy seeing the reproductions of the actual manuscript pages. I can‘t even imagine struggling through all the mixed pages, some with writing over writing, and handwriting like this to decipher these early drafts. It definitely makes Tolkien‘s difficulty in figuring out the next phase of Frodo & Sam‘s journey more clear, and I enjoyed reading that process.

#LotRHistory #FellowshipofTolkien #YearsofTolkien

Daisey Also, with it being the first full week of a new school year, I can‘t even keep up with my own schedule. I‘ll try to read at least some each day so I can catch up over the weekend. 5y
JazzFeathers I tried to read that page. Couldn't. Sure, Christopher could read the original, which l think are a bit clearer, but goodness! Still, l like Tolkien's handwriting. It has kind of the same quality as his drawings. 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Right! And remember in the Hobbit history he was handing these pages to his son,who was still very young to type up the fair copy for him. No wonder things got missed, and honestly if Christopher can‘t read that writing after all those years of practice, what hope do the rest of us have. 🙈😂 5y
Daisey @JazzFeathers @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Yes! I could read a little of it, but not much. 5y

In a way, l'm a bit sorry that Tolkien seems to come to the final version of the story so quickly in these later chapters because we don't get to read as much 'new' material as we did in the early stages.

The Dead Marshes is one of my favourite chapters in the book. I was eager to read more. But l suppose l'll have to wait for our reread 😆

Riveted_Reader_Melissa My guess now is they wrote themselves with very little pre-drafting because this is where the story took over for a bit, off the careful track he had planned, so we miss out on the planning stages...because they weren‘t planned really. 5y

After concluding the Isengard/Helm's Deep episode, Tolkien got back to Frodo and Sam... after one year of hiatus.

As Christopher point out, it's easy to feel Tolkien‘s difficulty in getting back to the story. This first chapter is clearly a trial and mistake path.
But l adored reading Sam! Being a later addition to the story, we haven't read much of him so far. Certainly not as much as l'd like 😆

Daisey I just finished this chapter and really appreciated seeing the rough drafting taking place. 5y

Fantastic! I really enjoyed reading how the idea for the Palantiri emerged, on the page, just like it happend for the One Ring.
I especially like seeing how Tolkien slowly sank into his Silmarillion to explain the Stones.

Incidently, when l read of how The Palantir of Minas Tirith was found, l thought that if they play it right, the new series might turn out to be fantastic!
