Although most of our land is under water, yesterday was a long day of farm work, but I also found time to take a kayak out! I‘m generally a jeans and boots (or flip flops) girl; however, flood related work required shorts. Today I‘m sore and sunburnt. So, I‘m enjoying some quiet time with my book this morning before church. I‘m intrigued to read more about this hobbit kidnapping that didn‘t stay in the story.

JazzFeathers I'm so curious about the kidnapping too. 10h

So, this is so interesting. Even when Aragorn appears, he retained Trotter for a while.
He transitioned from one character to the other more slowly than l expected.

And it's interesting to see that at this stage the story of the kidnapped hobbit is still in place.

Daisey I have been surprised by just how slowly the transformation happens as well. 1d

As always, it is amazing to see the story creeping on towards what we know.
But l'm particularly eager to see Aragorn plaid out, because my impression is that this is still "the new hobbit" rather than "The Lord of the Rings".
There must have been a moment when Tolkien realised he was actually writing a completely new story. I think that moment will be connected to Aragorn.

I finished the first chapter yesterday and the second this morning. I am continuously fascinated by Tolkien‘s own uncertainty about the character of Trotter and his slow development into Aragorn. I‘ll also admit sometimes I get completely lost in all the hobbit names and developments, but I love the dedication of Christopher for sharing these little details with the readers who are interested.

JazzFeathers I totally agree with you. He couldn't have been more dedicated if it had been his own writing. 4d

In this first chapter of the book Christopher gathers all the notes that partano to one of be biggest update of the story: Peregrin Boffin slowly becomes Aragorn.
As always, it's fascinating to see ideas morph.

Aragorn is such a fascinating, pivotal character. I'm loving seeing him emerge.

wordslinger42 I was thinking the same thing as I was reading! I was also exhausted just thinking about the rabbit hole Christopher Tolkien must have went down to figure out the nuances in the name changes for Odo/Pippin! 4d
Daisey @wordslinger42 @JazzFeathers Aragorn is one of my favorite characters, and I find the emergence and development of his character so fascinating. It amazes me how uncertain Tolkien himself seemed about this character for so long and how he evolved over time. 4d

Yesterday, my 17 yo old decided to binge watch Peter Jackson‘s Lord of the Rings movies - extended version. I‘ve been wanting to read The History of Middle Earth, so I suggested that he should read it too. He agreed as he‘s been watching YouTube videos about Middle Earth and the background of Tolkien‘s LOTR. So I bought the trade paper versions yesterday. Has anyone else read these? If so, what are your thoughts?

LibrarianJen The only book I‘ve read outside of the trilogy and the hobbit is the adventures of Tom Bombadil, which I absolutely loved. 5d
BarbaraJean I‘ve never read the History of Middle Earth (someday maybe!), but I think @JazzFeathers and the #YearOfTolkien crew read it a little while back! You might check out that hashtag or #LOTRHistory I think as well. 5d
JazzFeathers They are amazing books. We have just started with the second of the LotR History, if you fancy to join us 😊 5d

rretzler @LibrarianJen I have Tom Bombadil, and also several others, but haven‘t read them yet. I received this book as a ARC and bailed unfortunately 4d
rretzler @BarbaraJean Thanks for the tip! 4d
rretzler @JazzFeathers Thanks for the invite, I would love to join but I was deluged with 4 holds from the library plus 3 group reads I need to get through this month. I would love to follow along with the groups posts, but I may not start to read the books until next year, at this point. I‘ll probably let my son read them first. 4d
shanaqui I used a couple of them as sources when I was writing my MA essays on LOTR! There's a lot of interesting background in there. 4d
rretzler @shanaqui Lucky you to get to write your MA essays on LOTR! 😄 4d

As I start my section late tonight, it occurs to me my fellow #YearOfTolkien group, by starting this book we are now officially in the second half of the Histories of Middle Earth! That‘s quite an accomplishment, we‘ve read 1/2 of the histories already, more if we count the Rateliff Hobbit History, but half of Christopher Tolkien‘s epic deep dive histories about his father‘s writings!

Congratulations to all of us! Go us!!

#LOTRHistory

Daisey This is a very cool thing to realize! Thanks for sharing. I‘m so glad we‘ve developed this group to read and discuss all these books. I love Tolkien‘s work, but I‘m not sure I ever would have attempted all the history books on my own. 5d
BookwormAHN I'm glad I've joined in 😺 5d
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Daisey Me either, 12 History of books always sounded very daunting to me, but somehow as a group, one section at a time, here we are! Again, go us! It‘s a pretty great accomplishment, at least for me, if it was a game we‘d have earned some nerdy literary accomplishment badge. 📚🤓 📚 5d

JazzFeathers I mean, we're cool, aren't we? 😏 I know l would probably never read these books alone. I even hesitated when we started. But we read Book of Lost Tales and l basically found myself inside the History without really realising it, and l loved reading group with you gals, and so l though, hell yes!!! And hey, gals, it will soon be our second anniversary, can you believe that? 😆 5d
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @JazzFeathers I completely agree, I was hesitant too, it‘s such a large commitment....but it‘s snuck up on me too...I‘ll try one and see how it goes, then that was pretty good, one more. I agree too the group kept me motivated and picking up the next one too. We‘ll soon be on our #Year3OfTolkien! That‘s impressive too! We are cool 😎 (edited) 5d
wordslinger42 @Riveted_Reader_Melissa @JazzFeathers @Daisey It's crazy to think it's been that long! Although, I think it's only one year for me because I joined in late! 5d
