Fiction. One August morning while walking her dog, high-school English teacher Beatrice Ousterhout stumbles over the dead body of a student, Amber Inglin, who was to play the lead in Beatrice's production of John Webster's Jacobean tragedy, The Duchess of Malfi. Barely able to speak, Beatrice calls the police. That is to say, she calls her daughter. Jes is a detective with two years of experience under her belt and a personal life composed primarily of a string of one-night-stands, including the owner of the field in which Beatrice has found Amber. In addition to a house and a field, Child Services lawyer Liam Walsh owns a vineyard, where Amber Inglin, along with a handful of other teens who've had difficulty negotiating the foster system, was an intern. Set among the hills and lakes of upstate New York and told in six vibrantly distinct voices, this complex and original narrative chronicles the rippling effects of a young girl's death through a densely intertwined community. By turns funny, fierce, lyrical and horrifying, BIRDS OF WONDER probes family ties, the stresses that break them, and the pasts that never really let us go.

Since I apparently have issues getting to the post office through the week and a small branch just happened to be open this afternoon, I took advantage of my day off to finally get these posted.

@runswithscissors007 I'm sending you back Ayoade and (finally) Birds of Wonder. @ShelleyBooksie Pilgrims is headed your way. Sorry for all the delays. I wouldnt be me if I didnt procrastinate 😂

#LMPBC @Andrea4 @BookishTrish

BookishTrish I hear you though! I used to be able to walk to the post office and get mail out pretty much any day when I was at work. Now that I‘m working from home - and farther from a post office - it‘s so tricky! 3y
runswithscissors007 Haha! Thank you! No worries at all! You have way more interesting and important and adorable matters at hand!!! I read exactly zero books for 7 years while my kiddos where small. You are a marvel!!! 3y
ShelleyBooksie Agreed - My reading went waaaay down when my kiddo was a baby. 3y

Have done next to no reading at all this month but it's too hot today to do much so I'm finally getting to the last #LMPBC pick before starting on the next.

Pickpick

The individual characters were very well done - each voice was distinct. The mystery was interesting too - so many red herrings. There were a number of characters I‘d like to follow up with. If you like this, I highly recommend...

FantasyChick I was JUST thinking about this book and wondering if I missed it lol I'm glad I didn't accidentally have it here and lost it haha 4y
BookishTrish @FantasyChick I think it was my bad. All three LMPBC books from this round arrived on the same day and I read one a month, but I think I read them out of order maybe? 4y

What a great lmbc pick! This is a book I never would have picked up myself and I really enjoyed it. Excellent cast of characters!

FantasyChick Looking forward to it! 4y
runswithscissors007 Same! Not usually a genre I drift towards. Can‘t wait to get it back and see what folks have to say! 4y

#lmpbc help! As you can see someone has already begun the mark up...😬. (Embarrassing story there.) But I am nearly half way done and I can‘t seem to make myself mark up the book!!!
It is not the signature that is stopping me. It is my primary school librarian I keep hearing in my head!
What do people usually write and mark up in the books? Great words? Great quotes? Weird descriptions? Concerns? Questions? please HELP!

FantasyChick Anything you want! I've written anecdotes that pages remind me of, highlighted interesting phrases and passages, smart ass remarks in the margins.....anything at all that comes to mind as I read. There are no rules....anything goes! 4y
runswithscissors007 Ok! This helps! Sooooo Looking forward to this!!! 4y
ShelleyBooksie I like to underline phrases that stick out to me or make comments. Anything goes! The notes are the best part of the swap :) I will also admit that I sometimes forget I am supposed to be making comments - hehe. 4y
runswithscissors007 Ok whew! So no one is looking for profound observations.... 😬🙃. Thanks! 4y
