The Ocean Liner
The Ocean Liner | Marius Gabriel

As war engulfs Europe, 1,500 passengers risk everything to find a brighter future. Cousins Masha and Rachel Morgenstern board the luxury liner the SS Manhattan bound for New York, desperate to escape the concentration camps that claimed the rest of their family. America offers a safe haven, but to reach it they must survive a hazardous Atlantic crossing. Among their fellow passengers fleeing the war, each with their own conflicts, secrets and surprises, are the composer Igor Stravinsky, making a new start after a decade of tragedy, and Rose Kennedy, determined to keep her four children from harm. Particularly worrying to Rose is her daughter Rosemary, a vivacious but troubled woman whose love for a Californian musician may derail her family's political ambitions. And then there's young Thomas, a Nazi with a secret... But, under the waves, the Manhattan is being stalked by a German U-boat. Will any of those aboard the ocean liner ever achieve their dream of a new life in America?

Pickpick

This was okay. It was well written and there were times I felt interested and invested, but overall it was fairly slow. It was told from so many different POV‘s that the overall effects was a little jumbled. I think a serious editor would have benefited this book immensely. The narrator of the audiobook was fantastic though, so that kept me listening until the end. This is between a pick and a so-so for me.

JazzFeathers I tried it last month, but - maybe because there wasn't a good reader keeping me engaged - l bailed after the first few chapters 😩 6y
GypsyKat @JazzFeathers I probably would have bailed if I hadn‘t been listening to the audiobook. I could definitely see myself putting this down and “forgetting” to ever come back to it. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 6y
SilversReviews What a gorgeous cover...sorry the book wasn‘t that good. 6y
GypsyKat @SilversReviews It was okay, and the Audible narrator was really excellent so that helped. 6y
SilversReviews @GypsyKat Good to know...thanks. 6y

Audio redecorating continues! Painted, installed new blinds, installed new curtain rods, and new curtains hung up. I still have to steam them, and please ignore the furniture, but it‘s coming along! 💜🖤💪 #AudioProjects

I‘ve been listening to this audiobook and working on the living room. I took the painters tape all down, put the covers back on the outlets, and I‘m starting to install the new curtain rods. It‘s been a productive but tiring day.

DivineDiana You deserve a Reading Break! 6y
GypsyKat @DivineDiana I know! I‘m so tired! 😂 6y
AmyG But it‘s looking good. Soon you can relax and enjoy your “new” room! 6y
GypsyKat @AmyG Thank you! ❤️ I hope the new furniture gets here sooner rather than later. It could get here in a week, or three weeks. But either way I‘ll be happy to put the bookshelves back! 😄 6y

Bailedbailed

This is the second book l've bailed on in a week. Not good.
It actually started out nice: story mostly set on an ocean liner in the 1940s ( l mean, how amazing is that?), Nazis, Jews feeling from Germany, lots of secrets.
But the pace soon became glacial, with lots of pointless scenes and the characters goals and conflicts are mostly unclear.

Since l only own a file, l stole this pic from here https://bit.ly/2jPJ7so

Cinfhen Lovely photo 💕too bad about the book 6y
JazzFeathers @Cinfhen True. I had high expectations. The photo is not mine (l only own a file). I've added the link to the original place above 😊 lt is truly great 6y
Mdargusch Darn! This sounds so good. And that photo is 💙 6y

#ReadingResolutions #MayTBR

Tentative list of books to read this month. The Lays of Beleriand is part of the #YearOfTolkien readalong. A Promise Given and A Dark Cold Sea are my choice for the #NetGalleyTBRAttack challenge.
Hope to have a better reading month than April
