Trekonomics: The Economics of Star Trek
Trekonomics: The Economics of Star Trek | Manu Saadia
4 posts | 2 read | 21 to read
Saadia proves that "Star Trek" is an even more valuable cultural icon than we ever suspected. Charlie Jane Anders, former editor-in-chief, "io9" What would the world look like if everybody had everything they wanted or needed? "Trekonomics," the first book from financial journalist Felix Salmon's imprint Pipertext, approaches scarcity economics by coming at it backwards through thinking about a universe where scarcity does not exist. Delving deep into the details and intricacies of 24th century society, "Trekonomics" explores post-scarcity and whether we, as humans, are equipped for it. What are the prospects of automation and artificial intelligence? Is there really no money in Star Trek? Is Trekonomics at all possible?"

Saadia looks into the economics of 24th c Trek: TNG, DS9, VOY. He wonders what is capital with the lack of material scarcity in the Federation. He posits that it achievement. That by gaining knowledge one is accruing capital. He looked at some of the legal questions Trek posed, like the personhood of Data and the EMH.

But I LOVED that he appreciated the ambiguity and contradictions that are DS9! I thoroughly enjoyed the chapter on the Ferengi. ⬇️

Megabooks ⬆️ I definitely recommend this to all the Trekker Littens out there! #audiobook (edited) 3y

Megabooks @Mrs_B I really enjoyed it. I love it when authors or others ponder the Trek universe seriously, and I think he made some really good points. He obviously knew his Trek. 3y

Megabooks @BarbaraBB Thank you!! 🥰 I feel like I could stand to learn more about economics, but I very much enjoyed this combination of a refresher of my college course and a favorite TV series. 3y

This book, as its title indicates, is about the economics of the Star Trek universe. It explores many concepts. From the replicator and post scarcity, to a reputation based value for economics and finding and honoring the work that a person enjoys. It intersperses these concepts with real world examples. This serves to connect these two worlds in grounded terms, and allows the reader to dream about Star Trek once again like an idealistic child.

I posted a photo of my Christmas gifts but never posted Mr. Z's. Here were the goodies I surprised him with. The Flight book is published by the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum and is full of pictures and cool trivia. 👍 (and yes, he uses toilet paper as his bookmark. It's his preferred material. Such an odd duck!)
