Hunting and Gathering
Hunting and Gathering | Anna Gavalda
Camille is doing her best to disappear. She barely eats, works at night as a cleaner and lives in a tiny attic room. Downstairs in a beautiful, ornate apartment, lives Philibert Marquet de la Durbellire, a shy, erudite, upper-class man with an unlikely flatmate in the shape of the foul-mouthed but talented chef, Franck. One freezing evening Philibert overcomes his excruciating reitcence to rescue Camille, unconscious, from her garret and bring her into his home. As she recovers Camille learns more about Philibert; about Franck and his guilt for his beloved but fragile grandmother Paulette, who is all he has left in the world; and about herself. And slowly, this curious quartet of misfits all discover the importance of food, friendship and love.

A book about three strangers that meet

Andrew65 This has definitely got a good rating. 1y
AnneCecilie @Andrew65 This is a feel good read and I loved that she didn‘t fall into the trope where the two boys both fall in love with the girl. 1y

Such a sweet and comporting read.

Camille, Philibert and Franck, three strangers who through coincidences meet. They each have their issues with friends and family. I loved this. It‘s not often I read a 600+p book in 5 days after work.

The only thing I‘m asking myself is why didn‘t I read this sooner? After all it has been standing on my shelves close to 15 yrs.

The last third is my #BookSpin for July

Day9 #readingresolutions @Jess7 #foreignreads I‘ve had this french book on my TBR shelf for many years now, this year I will finally finish it! I loved the movie and have read it in german as well, back when I was still in school, otherwise my french would probably not be good enough for it😅

tournevis Good for you! Hope you like it. This one was not for me. 6y
ju.ca.no @tournevis hmm me and my friends back in school loved the film so very much, I think for that reason alone I have too many good memorys to not like the book😅 and the short chapters are great for practising the language 😊 6y

Mehso-so

So it was okay. A nice story about four lonely people that come together. Too long and the sweet moments were stretched out too far to do more than skim along through much of the dialogue. Not bad but I'm really searching for that "knock my socks off" read for the end of the year - this just wasn't it I'm afraid.

This book is beautiful and great with characters that are lonely misfits that are easy to love. I loved it, and it made me love Anna Gavalda. I've read some of her other books, but this one was my first and has a special place in my heart! (I don't get the English title though.)

Mednasanienbok Never read anything by her☺️ 8y
ramyasbookshelf Can you translate the original title, please? I sometimes wonder about the English titles of translated works.. 8y
MyBookLife @Mednasanienbok Really? Why not!? 8y

MyBookLife @ramyasbookshelf The French title is something like 'together, that's everything' (or maybe togetherness is everything) in Swedish it is 'together you are less alone'. Much more beautiful (and fitting to the book), don't you think? 8y
ramyasbookshelf Wow.. The English title is not even close to the meaning! And much less interesting. I would definitely pick up a book called 'together you are less alone'.. But I would think twice before picking up 'hunting and gathering'.. You have made me very curious about this book now. 8y
MyBookLife @ramyasbookshelf I know! Me too! I had to google it to make sure it was the same book 🙃 It was a bestseller in France, and here too. There is also a movie, but it doesn't come close to the book! I hope you read it, and if you do, please let me know your thoughts after!! 8y
Mednasanienbok @MyBookLife I just never got around to it😊 8y
MyBookLife @Mednasanienbok Okej, so it isn't because you think you won't like them? 8y
Mednasanienbok @MyBookLife No! I bet I would love them. There are just so many books waiting to be read and too little time... 8y
MyBookLife @Mednasanienbok Then I understand! I understand completely, believe me 📚🕰😅 8y
