Her Last Breath | Linda Castillo

An extraordinarily beautiful Amish woman, a dangerous femme fatale, is the central figure in Linda Castillo's "Her Last Breath," a story that reveals a dark side of Painters Mill and its seemingly perfect Amish world"A rainy night, an Amish father returning home with his three children, a speeding car hurtling toward them out of nowhere."""""What at first seems like a tragic, but routine car accident suddenly takes on a more sinister cast as evidence emerges that nothing about the crash is accidental. But who would want to kill an Amish deacon and two of his children? He leaves behind a grieving widow and a young boy who clings to life in the intensive care wing of a hospital, unable to communicate. He may be the only one who knows what happened that night. Desperate to find out who killed her best friend's husband and why, Kate begins to suspect she is not looking for a reckless drunk, but instead is on the trail of a cold blooded killer amid the residents of Painter's Mill. It is a search that takes her on a chilling journey into the darkest reaches of the human heart and makes her question everything she has ever believed about the Amish culture into which she was born.

I loved it. Because of all I learned about the Amish. And for Kate‘s and Tomasetti‘s personal life. They feel authentic, relatable. Not fictional.
Then came the showdown and I was like: “Meh, Linda, you could‘ve done better.” But then came another turn and I realised the personal dimension this case has for Kate – and that caught me/won me over.

But I think, Kate came off to cheap of her personal secret. 🤷🏽‍♀️ That plot line is too thin for me.

Another great Kate Burkholder mystery!! This is #5 in the series. Even more than the mystery, I loved how the suspense level increased when Kate‘s big buried secret threatened her career and reputation. I also love the choice John Tomasetti made to buy a fixer-upper house and farm, and what this could mean for his future with Kate. These books are so consistently good and I love that I still have a bunch of them left to read.

This is book #5 of the series. They just keep getting better and better.
This case is very close to the Chief of Police Kate Burkholder. An accident has happened to her once best friend Mattie's husband and children. Husband and two out of three of the children have died.
The investigation into the accident looks more like a murder then an accident. But Kate needs to keep investigating the incident to find out for sure as to what happened.

The latest installment of this fascinating series did not disappoint, even though it did make me question the fragile morality of humans and how a seemingly normal, happy Amish family could be hiding a devastating secret. I am also happy that the romance between Burkholder and Tommasetti is progressing, too. I am so glad that these books caught my attention. #recentlyread #nospoilers #Amishfiction #femalepolicechief #thrillerseries ⚠️

While not my favorite in the series, still an entertaining read. Kate Burkholder is the chief of police in a largely Amish community and encounters a deadly hit and run involving a buggy, but all is not as it first appears. As she investigates, she uncovers crimes much more sinister. #crime #thriller #mystery
