The Rosary Girls
The Rosary Girls: A Novel of Suspense | Richard Montanari
12 posts | 19 read | 17 to read
BONUS: This edition contains an excerpt from Richard Montanari's The Echo Man. In his sleek, visceral novels Deviant Way, Kiss of Evil, and The Violet Hour, Richard Montanari slammed into the suspense field like a force of nature. Now Montanari has written an astounding novel that pits two besieged detectives against a fiercely intelligent serial killer. Sprawling beneath the statue of William Penn, Philadelphia is a city of downtrodden crack houses and upscale brownstones. Somewhere in this concrete crazy quilt, one teenage Catholic girl is writing in her diary, another is pouring her heart out to a friend, and yet another is praying. And somewhere in this city is a man who wants these young women to make his macabre fantasy become reality. In a passion play of his own, he will take the girls–and a whole city–over the edge. Kevin Byrne is a veteran cop who already knows that edge: He’s been living on it far too long. His marriage failing, his former partner wasting away in a hospital, and his heart lost to mad fury, Byrne loves to take risks and is breaking every rule in the book. And now he has been given a rookie partner. Jessica Balzano, the daughter of a famous Philly cop, doesn’t want Byrne’s help. But they will need each other desperately, since they’ve just caught the case of a lifetime: Someone is killing devout young women, bolting their hands together in prayer, and committing an abomination upon their otherwise perfect bodies. Byrne and Balzano spearhead the hunt for the serial killer, who leads them on a methodically planned journey. Suspects appear before them like bad dreams–and vanish just as quickly. And while Byrne’s sins begin to catch up with him, and Balzano tries to solve the blood-splattered puzzle, the body count rises. Meanwhile, the calendar is approaching Easter and the day of the resurrection. When the last rosary is counted, a madman’s methods will be revealed, and the final crime will be the one that hurts the most. Relentlessly paced and vividly told, The Rosary Girls is a smart, emotionally complex, fiercely gripping thriller from an author who takes chances, breaks new ground, and leaves readers haunted and moved long after the last page is turned.

This book is about a violent serial killer in Philadelphia whose victims are Catholic high school girls who are found murdered with rosary beads wrapped around their hands. Since I was born in Philly and went to Catholic school, I did enjoy all the Philly locations mentioned from Center City to the Far Northeast. The religious details about the rosary and the mention of many Catholic high schools made the book very familiar to me.

EadieB I found the relationship of Kevin Byrne, a veteran policeman, and Jessica Balzano, a new partner, very interesting. Richard Montanari's research was top-notch and very informative. The murderer was a complete surprise but the ending dragged unnecessarily due to many twists of different suspects. If you are familiar with Philly and enjoy mystery/thrillers, then you will enjoy this book. 3y

Mehso-so

I really struggled with this one. Felt very long winded, clunky and struggled to hold my interest. It seems far too long, and didn‘t really feel any tension through it. Hopefully the next one is better if I am to continue with the series. @EadieB @Tove_Reads @eanderson @Bklover @Elizabeth2

EadieB @Andrew65 I just finished this book this morning. Being a Catholic from Philadelphia, I did enjoy all the Philly locations and religious details about the Rosary. I think Montanari is an excellent writer and I was never bored except the ending dragged a bit. I definitely will be reading the rest of the series. (edited) 3y
Andrew65 @EadieB Sounds like you enjoyed it more than me, Fair to say my concentration levels are still not what I would like them to be, and that might have affected my view. Still fighting to get back to normal. Walked about 400 yards today, got home and felt like I was comatose on he sofa! 3y
EadieB @Andrew65 I can understand that you would not enjoy it as much as I did same as when I first read Robinson and Rankin, you seemed to be familiar with all the locations and I think that gave you a better enjoyment factor. Sorry to hear you are still struggling and tiring so easily. Hopefully your going back to work won‘t make you continue to move backwards in your illness. Is there anyway you can put off going back so soon? (edited) 3y
Tove_Reads @andrew65 @eadieb I agree with Eadie, except for the living in Philly part. Only visited once very briefly. Didn‘t enjoy The Hundredth Man that much. 3y

Top-notch police procedural, first in the series. Two great cop protagonists- Byrne the tough veteran, Jessica Balzano the newbie out to prove herself. Fast-paced and well-written with a serial killer for whom the description "sick fuck" is waaaay too kind.
