The Read-Aloud Family
The Read-Aloud Family: Making Meaningful and Lasting Connections with Your Kids | Sarah Mackenzie
Connecting deeply with our kids can be difficult in our busy, technology-driven lives. Reading aloud offers us a chance to be fully present with our children. It also increases our kids academic success, inspires compassion, and fortifies them with the inner strength they need to face lifes challenges. As Sarah Mackenzie has found with her own six children, reading aloud long after kids are able to read to themselves can deepen relationships in a powerful way. Founder of the immensely popular Read-Aloud Revival podcast, Sarah knows first-hand how reading can change a childs life. In The Read-Aloud Family, she offers the inspiration and age-appropriate book lists you need to start a read-aloud movement in your own home. From a toddlers wonder to a teenagers resistance, Sarah details practical strategies to make reading aloud a meaningful family ritual. Reading aloud not only has the power to change a familyit has the power to change the world.

Such an important book for parents! The benefits of reading aloud to your children are countless. The author gives you tips & tricks to make it part of your life. She provides reading lists & activities for each age group and three questions for you to ask while picking out books for your kids. Such a great resource and one I will return to in the future.

“Stories reach us where nothing else can and quicken the heartbeat of the hero within us.”

thebluestocking I loved this one too!! 💙 4y

Sweet article in this weekend‘s Guardian about reading aloud to older children. I‘ve had raised eyebrows that we still read aloud to Seth, who is 11, and I find that surprise odd, particularly given how popular audiobooks are now 🤷‍♀️ https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2019/feb/09/why-i-read-aloud-to-my-teen...

AlaMich I don‘t have kids, but it seems to me that if your kids participate willingly, what‘s the problem? You enjoy it, they enjoy it...win-win! 5y
Lindy 👍So many benefits for families who read aloud. #raisingreaders 5y
JennyM I‘m with you - we still read aloud every day (my oldest is 9). It‘s a great way to connect...and snuggle. I will do it as long as the kids want to. 5y
kspenmoll Keep reading aloud. We did it as a family forever. We still on occasion read aloud to each other. It‘s the sharing! 5y
minkyb I love reading aloud. My children are out of the house and occasionally I convince my husband to read aloud with me especially poetry. 5y

As a bookworm and a mother this book has found a special place in my heart. While I am coming from a more secular mindset than that of Sarah, I still see this book as indispensable in any parents arsenal of educational tools.

As a book lover I can't help but appreciate this book and the message. I thought the last chapters of great read aloud books, divided by age, was helpful. I also thought the ten questions to ask your kids about what they read helpful too. I plan on implementing read aloud time in our house. I really fell away from this as my kids got older. However, I realize that this can be a small way for us to connect and relate with each other.

I listened to this on audio. Sarah has a charming voice and her podcast is fantastic, so the majority of the book is fantastic on audio. You probably want a paper copy for the book lists at the back though. I can‘t recommend the read aloud revival highly enough for finding quality books for your kids that they‘ll actually enjoy. And she makes such a compelling argument for reading aloud as a family here, it‘s hugely inspiring. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Well this quote from chapter 2 is rather accurate.

#currentlyreading this parenting books about reading aloud to your kids, but (perhaps because I‘m not familiar with the author‘s podcast) I had no idea it would be such a Christian-themed approach. There are still a lot of really good ideas about how to read with and talk to your kids about books, but I wish the book‘s description or cover made her religious approach clearer. Anyone have any suggestions for more secular approaches in this topic?

JillR No suggestions but I‘m so happy my 11 year old is still happy to have me read to him. He doesn‘t see it as babyish, as we tend to read aloud the trickier books he might not try by himself. We‘re also venturing into more “adult” books now, that we both want to read :) 6y
Sace Is this a quasi spinoff of The Read Aloud Handbook? 6y
Lindy @RestlessFickleBookHoarder That is one of the titles I was going to suggest. Another oldie but goodie is 6y
emtobiasz @Lindy @RestlessFickleBookHoarder thanks for the suggestions! The author is definitely inspired by Jim Trelease and name drops him several times. 6y

Just picked this up at my church bookstore. I already read aloud to my daughter nightly and, if I know I won‘t be there at bedtime, I read to her earlier in the day. My husband reads to her at bedtime when I‘m not there.

I know this book will only make us better at something we already do. 🙂

Reviewsbylola This sounds really cool. I always read aloud to my children too. 6y

I didn‘t track my time for #24in48, but I really enjoyed everything I read! I finished the 2nd half of Edge of Extinction: Ark Plan and got 40 pages into the sequel, Code Name Flood. I also listened to the 2nd half of The Read-Aloud Family —a re-read in anticipation of an upcoming online book club event.

I had fun with a lot of the challenges, but I gotta say, it partially contributed to me being on my phone WAY too much — a readathon conundrum!

PSA: This amazing book is on sale today for Kindle and Nook and Google Play (and probably iBooks). This is a brand new release, and it contains so much great advice for reading aloud with kids regardless of their age or whether you‘ve never done it or do it all the time. Also worth it just for the book lists in the back! #booksale #ebookdeal

My morning #vacation stack. I am reading one chapter a day from the Capon book, reading True Grit in stages alongside #CloseReadsPodcast, and dipping into the others as the mood strikes.

⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I could not put this book down. If you have kids of any age, there is something in this book for you. I have been reading aloud to my daughter almost every night since she was born, but I found so many insights and concepts that will help me improve the experience for both of us. And this book is worth its price for the reading aloud lists alone. I have also enjoyed the author‘s podcast #readaloudrevival.

Tamra I listened to several episodes today and I love that she pointed out we never outgrow picture books, they are simply another genre. I whole heartedly agree! 6y
thebluestocking @Tamra I have been guilty of discounting picture books, but after the podcast and book I have recommitted to making them a part of our reading routine. 6y
Tamra @thebluestocking the upside is you have a backlog of some wonderful art & writing awaiting! I agree with her that picture books are also written at differing levels & interests, so there is something for everyone. I am continually amazed at the talent out there. 6y

The Short Version: I loved this inspiring book so much I have it in two different formats! But I have way too many words to say about it for Litsy — full review (aka The Long Version) on my blog:

smilingshelves I'm hoping to get to this one soon! I'm in a race against my library due date for three books right now, so hopefully after that! 6y
BucklingBookshelves @smilingshelves I think you‘ll love it! Just be prepared for quite a bit of overlap with the podcast. I really like having it all in one cohesive place though 😊 (edited) 6y

Read-Aloud Revival is my favorite #bookishpodcast!Reading aloud has been one of the BEST ways to bring our family of 8 together regardless of quarrels or crises thrown our way. It‘s amazing to see what can be put to side so that we can all get wrapped up in a story. ❤️ #ReadingResolutions

So excited to read this one! I'm pretty sure the book lists in the back will have my TBR list exploding, since middle grade is one of my addictions. 😀

BucklingBookshelves 📚❤️📚 Same here! I‘m curious how many I already have on my TBR from the podcast vs. brand new ones... I haven‘t gotten to that section quite yet, but I know the list is long! I‘m loving the audiobook so far 😊 6y

BucklingBookshelves @smilingshelves So close! I decided to start with the audiobook. I think I‘m just going to listen once through and then go back through the paperback with book darts at hand later 😊📚 (edited) 6y

Happy Read Aloud Day!

VanChocStrawberry @JenaJenkins did you read anything to the girls? My evening was filled with chauffeur duties and none of my kiddos were home—so someone read to me via audiobook! 😆😍 6y
