In this exhilarating culinary novel, a woman's road trip through Indonesia becomes a discovery of friendship, self, and other rare delicacies.Aruna is an epidemiologist dedicated to food and avian politics. One is heaven, the other earth. The two passions blend in unexpected ways when Aruna is asked to research a handful of isolated bird flu cases reported across Indonesia. While it's put a crimp in her aunt's West Java farm, and made her own confit de canard highly questionable, the investigation does provide an irresistible opportunity. It's the perfect excuse to get away from corrupt and corrosive Jakarta and explore the spices of the far-flung regions of the islands with her three friends: a celebrity chef, a globe-trotting "foodist," and her coworker Farish. From Medan to Surabaya, Palembang to Pontianak, Aruna and her friends have their fill of local cuisine. With every delicious dish, she discovers there's so much more to food, politics, and friendship. Now, this liberating new perspective on her country--and on her life--will push her to pursue the things she's only dreamed of doing.

I enjoyed my first #ReadingAsia2021 book. This is not a part of the world I know much about, but I discovered so much. There's a loose plot based on an outbreak of avian flu and some romance, but at its heart, this is a culinary and cultural tour of Indonesia. I just wish there was an Indonesian restaurant nearby, the food was so lovingly depicted I want to try some. It is also my #bookspin book for #bookspinbingo. #JoyousJanuary

Starting this one. One review hinted at meandering and no real plot, another hinted at it falling into several genres. All of these things appeal to me right now.📖📚

Mehso-so

I want to mark this pan but there are so redeeming parts - it‘s well written, there‘s some really lyrical sentences. Nothing really happens. There‘s a lot of long descriptions of food and locations and friends. Many chapters start with dreams that are odd and don‘t really fit into the overall story. It‘s sort of a romance but not really. I don‘t really know what the point was. #readwomen #diversebooks

Happy Caturday! I‘m hanging out with Red today while his parents are out of town, and reading a little more of the tagged book. I like it, but it seems to ride the line between a couple of genres. Not a bad thing, not at all, it‘s a little unexpected, though. Soon I‘ll head home to Chico and do some dreaded housework. 🤷🏻‍♀️

LauraBrook @LeahBergen @Mitch @Christine11 @SandyW @whatshesreadingnow @AlaMich He says thank you ladies! He‘s really a cutie, but his usual look is sort of a dopey stare into space. Cracks me up. 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage I was thinking about you today. And then I had a senior moment and couldn‘t remember your Litsy name. Gah! Finally, after much searching I am here to say hi! Missed you. And let‘s all say it together: c‘mon Spring!! ❤️😘 6y
LauraBrook @BarbaraTheBibliophage You‘ve been on my mind a lot lately too! Need to mosey over and see what you‘ve been up to. Miss you too! And please, I forget people‘s Litsy or real names all the time. I just learned a LibraryThing friends real name after almost 10 years and it seems wrong somehow. C‘mon Spring indeed! Saw my first robin yesterday so I think that‘s a good sign. 💖 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @LauraBrook I saw my first robin not long ago too! Near me is a migration stopping point for geese, and they are moving north so yay! Hope you guys haven‘t had too much snow with these two recent systems in the East. 💓💓 (edited) 6y
