In the near post-apocalyptic future, the skies are always gray and people are constantly searching for the sun. For teenage outlaw Seph, it's the only world he's ever known. With his horse, his favorite pistol, and his knowledge for survival passed down from his dead father, Seph knows it's safer to be alone. But after a run-in with a local gang that call themselves the Lawmen, and having been wrongly accused of murder, Seph teams up with Avery--a determined girl whose twin brother has been taken by the same gang. After living in a small, rundown town her whole life, Avery knows nothing of the Wild--the lands controlled by nobody where travel is risky. With Seph's help, they track down her brother but quickly find the tables have turned and they are now the ones being hunted. With rumors of mysterious dangers to the south and a safe sanctuary to the west, they've only got one option, but getting there won't be easy with the Lawmen on their trail. The only thing that matters in the Wild is how fast your trigger hand is, but Seph doesn't know if his will be fast enough to save them all.

The author does a good job of alternating between character point of view. You can really tell the difference between Seph and Avery. Being a futuristic, post-apocalyptic, YA western, it is different from my normal read, but I like a good story a this is a good story!

I read 16 books in June. My favorite was the tagged book, Ride On. Honorable mention goes to The Bookshop of Yesterdays, A Guide for Murdered Children and Hocus Pocus And the All-New Sequel. And Abridged Classics is the book I'd most recommend as a gift to the reader in your life. #JuneWrapUp #JuneStats #MonthlyWrapUp

So much love for this post apocalyptic western! Seph and Avery were fantastic characters (although Cade the horse deserves honorable mention) and the ending was great. ❤❤❤❤❤

1. I just figured out that I need reading glasses and I'm weirdly excited about that! 👓
2. 3 older brothers.
3. Sadly, no.
4. Only in the sense that I'm totally obsessed with cold cases being solved when someone does the DNA genealogy test and uncovers a killer in the family! 🔪 #murderino

‪Wanna give a big shout out to Gwen Cole and the release of her new YA post-apocalyptic, western Ride On. I got to read an early copy of this book earlier this year and loved it. Can‘t recommend it enough, so go get it!

Had to ship the ARC of Ride On I read to the next reviewer. Seems appropriate to mail off this post-apocalyptic western under grey skies and to Texas, to boot. Happy trails, lil‘ ARC!

Finished reading Gwen Cole‘s Ride On this past Friday, and I loved it. The fact she captures the feel and mood of western within a post-apocalyptic setting impressed the hell out of me. Decided my author pic with my hat makes for an appropriate image for my Litsy review post.

I‘m more than a third of the way into this book, and it‘s taken a great turn. Seph and Avery‘s struggles are slowly becoming their society‘s struggle. The transition reads as a very natural progression, and that makes it all the more potent.

One of the subtle touches to Gwen Cole‘s world-building is the hats. While she sneaks a more proper cowboy hat in there, she also has several baseball caps, which makes perfect sense. Even though the point-of-view is coming from Avery, who doesn‘t know the teams‘ names, it‘s clear when she‘s describing a Kansas City Royals hat and a Philadelphia Phillies hat. #GwenCole #worldbuilding #RideOn #YA #youngadult #western #postapocalyptic

I like the world building in this book. The ways these places and players fit together all make sense. I also like that Seph and Avery provide very different views on this world. Avery is from a small, peaceful town, and Seph is a nomad living by his own moral code. #YA #youngadult #RideOn #GwenCole #western #postapocalyptic #ARC

Just getting ready to start chapter five, and Gwen Cole has already placed her two main characters in about as much trouble as possible. Lots at stake for these two. I‘m curious to see how Gwen brings their separate threads together in this book. #western #postapocalyptic #GwenCole #RideOn #YA #youngadult #ARC

Gwen Cole does a nice job setting the tone with these opening lines. The chapter makes it clear just how bleak and violent this future Texas has become. Seph embodies what you‘d expect from a cowboy in a place like this: a person who answers to his own code.
