Just Sit: A Meditation Guidebook for People Who Know They Should But Don't | Sukey Novogratz, Elizabeth Novogratz
7 posts | 4 read | 5 to read
From the cofounders of The Well Daily, a playfully-illustrated, informative, and easy-to-use meditation guidebookincluding an eight-week plan for busy novicesthat helps even the busiest would-be meditator incorporate this practice into their lifestyle and enjoy its many physical and emotional benefits. Weve all heard the reports about meditation: that it helps us relieve stress and anxiety, improve our moods, lose weight, and sleep better. We know that it can make us healthier, nicer, a kinder parent, a better coworker, a more thoughtful spouse. But theres a catchyou actually have to do it. Written for the many, many people whose schedule or skepticism has kept them from trying meditation, Just Sit is an approachable and visually engaging beginner's guide. Assuaging fears, answering questions, and providing real-world information to demystify the process, Sukey and Elizabeth Novogratz provide a hands-on look at what meditation really is, what is does, and how to do it. The authors make clear that meditation doesn't have to be complicated or follow a specific protocol. The most important part, to "just sit," can lead to a lifelong practice, tailored to anyone's lifestyle. A perfect blend of information and instruction, Just Sit covers everything you wanted to know but were too afraid to ask. Sukey and Elizabeth address meditation myths and realities, offer advice on how to combat awkwardness, extoll the physical and emotional benefits of meditation, show readers how to find those precious minutes to meditate every day, and more. They also include an eight-week plan to get help readers kick startand stay withtheir own daily practice. Time to ditch the excuses. With this warm, encouraging, sassy guide, everyone will want to show upand sit downevery day.

#IdiomInsight #HoldYrHorses

The idiom #HoldYourHorses is used to tell someone to be patient, wait, or slow down. It‘s often used when someone is acting crazy, hyper or going too fast. The origin is the 19th century when horse-drawn carriages were the main mode of getting around & drivers controlled them by holding the reins.

This book I read several years ago is about slowing down & taking time to sit & meditate & I suggest holding horses.

Today's lunch and blog post for #soupersundays is this Potato-Leek Soup with Crispy Fried Capers. The soup is simple & good & the fried capers give it an extra punch of flavor. 😋I had to move/postpone a few book tour reviews while I was out, including the one for this book on meditation so I'm trying to catch up with everything slowly but surely. Link to soup & fried caper recipe is below. 🍲❤️📚

SandyW I've never heard of fried capers before. They look interesting, as does the recipe for the soup. 6y
BookMaven407 Looks delicious. 6y

Chrissyreadit This sounds so good. Hoping I can try it out this week. 6y
Laura317 I love capers! I add them to lots of dishes. 6y
GlassAsDiamonds FRIED capers?!?!? I need to try this, ASAP! 😱❤️😱❤️😱❤️ 6y
TricksyTails Yum!! I recently roasted capers with some veggies and was quite pleased with how tasty they were! 6y
DebinHawaii @SandyW They are really delicious. 😋 @BookMaven407 @Chrissyreadit It really is a tasty soup. 🍲❤️ @Laura317 I put them in everything I can! 😋👍 @GlassAsDiamonds They make a really great topping--although I ate a good portion of them as I was frying them! 😆 @TricksyTails Mmm... roasted capers sound great too! 😋💚 6y
ValerieAndBooks I love capers!! Will have to try frying them! @TricksyTails I include them with roasted veggies all the time...yum! ☺️ 6y
TricksyTails @ValerieAndBooks Oh my word!! They are so good with roasted veggies! But I could eat capers straight from the jar and be mighty happy. 😄 6y
ValerieAndBooks @TricksyTails me too!! It has to be Alessi brand, too. Others are just not as good in my opinion! 6y

I started off interested in the idea of learning to meditate, and a book for beginners sounded promising. However, the cutesy tone of the book, coupled with the hyperbolic list of the many (many!) benefits of meditation and the over-complication of it all after the promise of simplicity (a diy meditation retreat!) may have actually turned me *off* of meditation. 😒

Chelleo I‘ve always found meditation but haven‘t been able to really get into it. I did try and like the Calm app which does guided meditation🧘🏾‍♀️🧘🏽‍♀️🧘🏻‍♀️ 6y

I'm concerned about exaggerated health claims that come with no citations, and ableist microaggressions, covertly (under the guise of humor) shaming the validity of taking prescription medication for mental health. I'm a big believer in the power of meditation and wanted to love this book, but instead, it oozed with the kind of insensitivity and oversimplified advice that comes with privilege. I recommend the free app Insight Timer instead.

Day 19 #SeasonsReadings2017 #Introverting outtake: When introverting becomes #catroverting 😹What happens when you try to take a floor picture & someone (🐱) spies ahi but then on closer inspection realizes that it is covered in yucky stuff he doesn't like.😾😿Don't feel too bad for Max--he got over it quickly. Also he practically ate his weight in ahi on Saturday & it's supposed to only be an occasional treat.😻🐟 #catsoflitsy #sorrynotsorry ❤️🤣

Mimi28 Hi Max!! 😻😻❤️❤️ 6y
tournevis Ahi good! Avocado poison! 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I say, smart mom...kept him from stealing bits! Looks delicious too, by the way. 6y

2BR02B My cats are always so flummoxed by my (vegan) food. They see me shoveling raw veg into my mouth and conclude that it must be food, but it simply doesn't meet their criteria. 6y
OrangeMooseReads Isabella is in your face the second she smells chicken. She stared at me with Puss-in-boots eyes Friday while I ate KFC LOL 6y

Days 18 & 19 #SeasonsReadings2017 #Resplendent #Introverting🎄Holiday self-care means driving back from a meeting & stoping to grab a poke bowl-resplendent with cubes of scarlet ahi & green cucumber, edamame & avocado on brown rice (I missed yesterday's prompt!)😆on the way home. Then taking a break to just sit on the floor quietly & do some introverting, while learning about meditation for a book tour review next week & enjoying a tasty lunch.❤️

AmyG Looks delicious. 6y
Annl Your life sounds so relaxing! 6y
DebinHawaii @AmyG It was yummy! 😋@Annl That 45 minutes was relaxing--the morning was kind of crap & likely the rest of the day, not so much! Gotta take those moments when you can dig them out!😆👍 6y
Annl I have been having more success with that since returning from the Yucatán, just grabbing a moment or two, here and there. 6y

Today's book haul-picked up 2 holds at the library. I've heard good things about both The Power & Code Girls-now I have to work them in.📚😬The tagged book is my last book tour review for the year & I look forward to learning more about meditation because I'm not good at quieting my mind & finding my zen happy place.😊Finally a childhood favorite for 25 cents at the library bookstore-I wanted to see if the magic is still there & 🐔🐔just because!

DebinHawaii Someday I'll find a copy of the one I had back in the day. #nostalgia 💜 6y
BookMaven407 Those 🐓are great! 6y
DebinHawaii @BookMaven407 Thanks! They are thrift stores finds I like to toss in there. 🐔🐔I probably should put holiday bows on them! 😆 6y
