What Is the Bible?
What Is the Bible?: How an Ancient Library of Poems, Letters, and Stories Can Transform the Way You Think and Feel About Everything | Rob Bell
Instant New York Times Bestseller Rob Bell, the beloved author of Love Wins and What We Talk About When We Talk About God, goes deep into the Bible to show how it is more revelatory, revolutionary, and relevant than we ever imaginedand offers a cogent argument for why we need to look at it in a fresh, new way. In Love Wins, Rob Bell confronted the troubling questions that many people of faith were afraid to ask about heaven, hell, fate, and faith. Using the same inspired, inquisitive approach, he now turns to our most sacred book, the Bible. What Is the Bible? provides insights and answers that make clear why the Bible is so revered and what makes it truly inspiring and essential to our lives. Rob takes us deep into actual passages to reveal the humanity behind the Scriptures. You cannot get to the holy without going through the human, Rob tells us. When considering a passage, we shouldnt ask "Why did God say . . .?" To get to the heart of the Bibles meaning, we should be asking: "Whats the story thats unfolding here and why did people find it important to tell it? What was it that moved them to record these words? What was happening in the world at that time? What does this passage/story/poem/verse/book tell us about how people understood who they were and who God was at that time?" In asking these questions, Rob goes beyond the one-dimensional question of "is it true?" to reveal the Bibles authentic transformative power. Rob addresses the concerns of all those who see the Bible as Gods Word but are troubled by the ethical dilemmas, errors, and inconsistencies in Scripture. With What Is the Bible?, he recaptures the Good Books magic and reaffirms its power and inspiration to shape and inspire our lives today.

Me: ‘I know my Bible.‘
God: ‘Do you now?‘
Me: ‘ I think so.‘
God: ‘Try again and this time look deeper…‘

1 - First book finished of many in 2021. Such a good breakdown of stories many of us have heard or read but missed the point or haven‘t taken a step back to look at the bigger picture. I recommend this to people of any faith, who have any questions stemming from biblical references. I know it‘s helped me to understand better!

Really enjoyed the audiobook. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ So glad Rob Bell read it himself. I will refer back to this book in the future.

Much of what is in this book was where God had brought me independently through prayer and study. I was relieved to find that I wasn‘t out there, that Evangelicals with their literal interpretations of the Bible weren‘t necessarily right. #audiobook

Rob Bell has so much enthusiasm and its infectious. I don't agree with some of his biblical interpretations but I love that he's wrestling with the Bible and sharing his insights which inspires others to wrestle for themselves.

This Quote really hit home with me. I closed the book for a moment and thought about all the painful parts of my own experience that became important and powerful. Losing a job, an academic suspension from graduate school, my grandmothers Alzheimer‘s diagnosis, my difficult relationship with my mom. So much...so many things that shaped me. #robbell #books #god #seriousreads

I enjoyed this book. I don‘t necessarily agree with all of the perspectives but however people choose to read and believe the Bible is ultimately up to them and I believe, there is hope for them at that point.

Loved this book. Bell gets a fair bit of criticism for simplifying things but that really is his whole point. I've already passed this along to two other Christians edging into the Universalist view, and honestly I think this might be an easier sell to traditionalists than Love Wins. Fast read, super enjoyable, great to discuss and share, plus a wide resource list should you want to go deeper. What more could you want?

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1/2

This book is a breath of fresh air to anyone who has felt both repulsed and embraced by the Bible. It's for the devout and the unreligious who are interested in this library we call The Bible. This book is a bridge. Recommend to anyone currently sorting out/reconstructing their theology. My only critique is the overuse of "insane", "crazy", "mental" sprinkled throughout.

Refreshing perspective on how to read and understand the Bible, and how its impact is just as relevant today. I may not agree with every word said, but that's the point. Ask questions, dig further, learn. I appreciate Bell's desire to open up the Bible to those who have been turned off or never interested. It's a worthwhile jumping off point for debate &/or hopeful understanding.

I'm a fan of Rob Bell and his perspective on what the Bible is, how/why/to whom it was written, and how to understand and apply its messages today. Some call him a heretic, but I find him refreshing and that he just makes sense. I saw him speak the other night and he was brilliant. Getting my book signed afterward, we had a 60-sec convo about the Neil Gaiman book he's reading (Ocean at the End of the Lane) when he saw my American Gods tshirt. 🤗🤓

I will read basically anything Rob Bell writes. I thought this was a great exploration of some tough questions, and I'll definitely be picking up my Bible more often now, and with a broader approach. Bell's style is very verbal and engaging; his stuff is always a quick but very substation read.
