A gorgeous novel that finds beauty in the most unlikely of places. Susan Wiggs, #1 New York Times bestselling author Set in 1950s Louisiana, Mandy Mikulencaks beautifully written and emotionally moving novel evokes both The Help and Dead Man Walking with the story of an unforgettable woman whose quest to provide meals for death row prisoners leads her into the secrets of her own past. Many children have grown up in the shadow of Louisianas Greenmount State Penitentiary. Most of themsons and daughters of corrections officers and staffleft the place as soon as they could. Yet Ginny Polk chose to come back to work as a prison cook. She knows the harsh reality of life within those wallsthe cries of men being beaten, the lines of shuffling inmates chained together. Yet she has never seen them as monsters, not even the ones sentenced to execution. Thats why, among her duties, Ginny has taken on a special responsibility: preparing their last meals. Pot roast or red beans and rice, coconut cake with seven-minute frosting or pork neck stew . . . whatever the men ask for Ginny prepares, even meeting with their heartbroken relatives to get each recipe just right. Its her way of honoring their humanity, showing some compassion in their final hours. The prison board frowns upon the ritual, as does Roscoe Simms, Greenmounts Warden. Her daddys best friend before he was murdered, Roscoe has always watched out for Ginny, and their friendship has evolved into something deep and unexpected. But when Ginny stumbles upon information about the man executed for killing her father, it leads to a series of dark and painful revelations. Truth, justice, mercynone of these are as simple as Ginny once believed. And the most shocking crimes may not be the ones committed out of anger or greed, but the sacrifices we make for love. Advance praise for The Last Suppers The Last Suppers held me riveted from the first page to the last, a gorgeous novel that finds beauty in the most unlikely of places. This story has the social conscience of The Help, the unflinching honesty of The Shawshank Redemption, and a wholly original heroine whose humanity will touch your heart as she cooks her way to redemption. Susan Wiggs, # 1 New York Times bestselling author A taut page-turner . . . had me in its grips to the shocking end of a well-crafted, gripping story. Anna Jean Mayhew, author of The Dry Grass of August Filled with heart and reverent solemnity, despair and hope, Mandy Mikulencaks writing is a sensitive, thoughtful narrative about finding freedom beyond the boundaries of what we believe of ourselves and of our past. With captivating characters, a unique premise, and set in sultry Louisiana, this story is as rich and enticing as the last suppers prepared, one you will want to linger over until the very last page. Pickpick

Great writing and flow. Loved the juxtaposition of the food descriptions and the impact they had on the men that requested them with the location / time period of a southern 1950s prison in Louisiana. Recipes provided a solid backbone and reprieve from the life story of Ginny Polk.

DebinHawaii This one sounds excellent! Stacking it. 📚👍 6y

Mehso-so

This novel had so much potential, but the storyline meandered and it felt as if the author couldn‘t decide which theme or themes she wanted to emphasize. I turned the pages quickly as all the right stuff is here to make an amazing novel, but it failed.

I have a habit of reading numerous books at once. This one about life in a Louisiana Penitentiary in the 1950‘s seems like a good one to add to the mix.

AmyG I have the same problem. 6y

So crazy that it took me this long to respond to my dilemma of December 31st: do I venture outside in the very cold weather or do I stay home in my cozy sweatpants, wrapped up in a warm comfy blanket, sipping tea & reading? I was encouraged by some of you to embark upon a last Book Haul of the Year journey, & I guess that even in ridiculously cold weather I am an easy pushover for that kind of thing because 'Yes, I did it! ' This is the result...

Nute @PurpleyPumpkin My winter time, cold day, snowy day ultimate goal is to cuddle up with something warm, fuzzy or hot. 6y
Nute @BellaBookNook Yes! I think tea and books might be the best answer to how to occupy time on very cold winter days. 6y
Nute @SaraBeagle Yeah, here we go. Dreiser and his brilliant writing all the way! 6y

Nute @wistfulthinking I don‘t know why I enjoy reading about what other folks like to read so much, but these type of books get me every time. 6y
