Monty Python Speaks
Monty Python Speaks: The Complete Oral History of Monty Python, as Told by the Founding Members and a Few of Their Many Friends and Collaborators | David Morgan
12 posts | 5 read | 13 to read
Monty Python, the genius comedy troupe from Britain, single-handedly revolutionized sketch comedy and paved the way for everything from Saturday Night Live to Austin Powers. Now, in their official oral history, founding members John Cleese, Eric Idle, Terry Gilliam, Terry Jones, and Michael Palin take readers behind the scenes in this no-holds-barred look at their lives and unforgettable comic works like "The Spanish Inquisition," "Dead Parrot," Monty Python's Life of Brian, Monty Python and the Holy Grail (inspiration for the hit Broadway musical Spamalot), and many, many more, with never-before-seen photos and rare interviews from friends and collaborators.

I devoured this in a weekend. John Oliver's foreword to the 50th anniversary edition is good, and I liked how sometimes the Pythons would revisit answers to questions they'd been asked in the first edition of the book. The only way to make this even better would have been a proper photo section in the middle of the book.

In a small way, Monty Python v. ABC Television proved to be a landmark case on the subject of moral rights, a part of copyright law not as fully appreciated in the United States as it is in some other countries.

(ABC cut a whole bunch of stuff from a Monty Python compilation before airing it, including, bizarrely, the words "naughty bits".)

For some reason I find it unbearably adorable that Graham Chapman could do "a very funny impression of the noise made by an espresso machine." ❤️

LisaMorr Loved him! I got to see him at a comedy club in Hermosa Beach, CA in 1987. 5y
rabbitprincess @LisaMorr That must have been amazing ♥️ 5y

This book is taking me forever to finish because I keep getting sidetracked. Every time they mention a specific skit I have to go watch it on YouTube. I planned on finishing it last night and instead I watched Monty Python Live at the Hollywood Bowl.

Geeklet Lol, I could see how that would easily happen. 5y

If you know what witches have in common with ducks, and have learned to always expect the Spanish Inquisition, then you will likely enjoy this book. If you have no idea what I'm babbling on about, it's probably not for you.

GarthRanzz Once I get a break from my job at the Ministry of Silly Walks, I‘ll have to look for this one. I need something to help me study for this year‘s Upper Class Twit of the Year competition. 😊 6y
TheKidUpstairs @GarthRanzz also good for planning a Bicycle Tour, or if you happen to find yourself mistaken for the Messiah 😂 6y
GarthRanzz Okay, now I have to watch The Life of Brian! “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life” has already become my latest ear-worm and in haven‘t even heard the song! 6y

It's a grey day out there, rain is threatening. But inside we're cozy and warm, dude is napping, and I'm ready to read! I've been working on this one all month, between novels. Hoping to finish today!

julesG Grumpy Snape watching over your book? 6y
CouronneDhiver It‘s very mucky out here today ... ☔️ 6y
TheKidUpstairs @CouronneDhiver it's pretty yuck here as well. I was able to get to the post office, and your #PoutineandPaperbacks selection has arrived! I've never heard of it before (which I'm very excited about), but I read the first couple sentences and was immediately intrigued! 6y
CouronneDhiver Oh good! @TheKidUpstairs 😊 It‘s an interesting one - very unique 6y

This is from an interview in the late 1990's with Douglas Adams about the impact of Monty Python on his creative life and work. This statement has only become more universal with the age of streaming. Everything is available all the time, and I feel like so much of that "gotta watch it!" passion has gone out of viewing. So many high school memories involving figuring out who would be able to "get" their tv for the latest episode of a show.

LeahBergen So true! 6y
Emilymdxn You‘re making me need to reread Douglas Adams now 6y

I just burst out laughing at "Graham as you know is still dead." Slightly problematic as I have a sick child sleeping on top of me, but worth it.

AND one of my regulars brought me a book!

💕💕💕💕💕💕💕

Pruzy Is it something completely different? 6y
TheKidUpstairs @Pruzy it seems to be a lot about the life of some guy named Brian. 6y
Pruzy @TheKidUpstairs But what is his favourite colour? 6y

I ❤️ Monty Python, so this is my choice for #starsandstripes. I guess it's ironic because the majority of them are British. ❤️💙❤️😂#jubilantjuly

MayJasper True, but they are (were) all stars in their pinstripe suits ❤ 7y
Leelee08 @MayJasper Definitely!😂😍 7y
