Bailedbailed

I was so excited to receive my first physical ARC. And then I started reading it. My reaction was some combination of anger (sexist and ableist content), disgust (ridiculously mediocre writing), and boredom (terrible characterization). I bailed at page 44. May the next book on my list be a zillion times better. It wouldn't take much.

Read4life Sorry your first ARC was so disappointing. 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Read4life Thankfully I've read a bunch of great ARCs from NetGalley. 😍 7y
Cinfhen Sorry for the stinker 😝how are you feeling?!? 7y

BarbaraTheBibliophage @Cinfhen Thanks. It's only my second bail for the year, so I don't feel too bad. I'm doing okay. Still working out my options as far as surgery, in fact I'm expecting a call from my surgeon today. He is wonderful it's just scary to imagine the whole process. 7y
ValerieAndBooks Sorry this didn't work out for you-- I doubt it would have for me also! Hope your surgeon's call goes well. 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @ValerieAndBooks I couldn't recommend it to even my worst enemy. Of course not friends like you either! Thanks for your good wishes on the call. Hoping he and I connect today. 7y

I'm 33 pages into this ARC and it's just not good. Lots of tell me rather than show me. And the characters (young boys) aren't even slightly likable. The author is following my GR account now. I'm feeling a DNF coming on. Ugh.

cathysaid I teach freshman comp and tell students to use personal pronouns sparingly. In this excerpt, there are eighteen! No. Just no. 😳 (edited) 7y
Ms_T Oh dear 🙁 7y
mjdowens You just look at the page and all you see is I I I I I etc. That is what editing my is for, just saying... 7y

Leftcoastzen Life is too short.... 7y
Megabooks Yikes!! 7y
UwannaPublishme Oh my! 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @cathysaid @mjdowens Thank you! I feel the same way. Not a stitch of dialogue on an entire page. That's too much telling. 😝 (edited) 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Leftcoastzen Sure is. I was going to give it 50 pages, but I dont think I can. There's some stuff I found offensive also, like the use of "retard." Will we never get past that term? 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Ms_T @Booksandcooks @UwannaPublishme Thanks for commiserating. Now I need to write a DNF review the way the brilliant @shawnmooney does! 7y

Guys, this is my first non-digital ARC ever! It's not a big author or publisher, but I'm still excited that they found my blog and asked me to review. Bloggers, what was your first non-digital ARC? #myfirstARC #happybibliophage

mom2bugnbee Just a few weeks ago -- The Almost Sisters by Joshilyn Jackson. I was so excited! 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @mom2bugnbee Exciting! How long have you been blogging? 7y
mom2bugnbee Actually, I was just about to edit my comment to say that I'm not a blogger. It was still my first ARC. ☺ 7y

BarbaraTheBibliophage @mom2bugnbee Still exciting, isn't it!?! 7y
heikemarie Yay!! 🎉 that is exciting! 7y
CouronneDhiver I see all these ARC posts on here but no idea how everyone gets them. 😂 7y
UwannaPublishme 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @CouronneDhiver I learned about the NetGalley site from other Littens and signed up. I've read quite a lot of ARCs that way. Before I had my blog, I was just reviewing on Goodreads. 7y
Graciouswarriorprincess How exciting and fun! 7y
