Pieces of Happiness
Pieces of Happiness: A Novel of Friendship, Hope and Chocolate | Anne Ostby
15 posts | 12 read | 24 to read
Ive planted my feet on Fijian earth and I intend to stay here until the last sunset . Why dont you join me? Leave behind everything that didnt work out! When recently-widowed Kat writes to her four old school friends, inviting them to live with her on a cocoa plantation in the South Pacific, they swap icy pavements and TV dinners for a tropical breeze and an azure-blue ocean. Leaving behind loneliness, dead-end jobs and marriages that have gone sour, they settle into the Womens House, surrounded by palms and cocoa trees; and locals with the puzzling habit of exploding into laughter for no discernible reason. Each of the women has her issues to resolve, and secrets to keep. But together the friends find a new purpose, starting a business making chocolate: bittersweet, succulent pieces of happiness. As they embrace a new culture that views ageing so differently from their own, will they learn to accept and forgive: to discover the value of friendship, and a better way to live?

There is a saying; we are born into the world alone, and we die alone. Yet, while we are living, we can surround ourselves with the people we love so that we can support each other through good and bad. I picked up this book set in Fiji because I lived there as a baby and the author currently lives in Pakistan (where I currently live). I enjoyed getting to know the unfamiliar Fiji scene while reminding me of the preciousness of lifelong friendship

I really liked this one. It was warm and refreshing without being silly, frothy, or romantic. Pieces of Happiness focuses on the lives of five women over 60 who live together in Fiji. I could sympathise with each character, and each one was more than a cliche.

And #Fiji ... I adore grey, cloudy days but have been won over to Fiji by this book.

And the cover and #Endpapers !

Cocoa pods 🤤

After reading a number of #HeavyBooks recently, this library book spoke to me.

“Take me home! Take me home! Look at how colourful I am! I am about friendship and hope and chocolate and #Fiji ! Give me a try!”

So I did. You can‘t ignore a book when it‘s making such an impassioned plea.

It doesn‘t have a great review on Litsy so far, but I‘m finding it to be beautiful, colourful, and hopeful - just like it told me it would be.

PurpleyPumpkin 😁Sounds like this book called out to you at the perfect time. Kismet!👌🏽 5y
Libby1 @PurpleyPumpkin - I really liked it. I felt like I was in Fiji, which was especially lovely because it‘s been so dreak here in Northern Ireland. Dreak is a wonderful word I learned when I moved here that is a mixture between dreary and bleak. 5y
PurpleyPumpkin Ha, dreak is a great word and one that I'm adding to my vocabulary. There are many days during Canadian fall/winter/spring periods that I can and will use that word. Also, I'm stacking this book! (edited) 5y

I entered an Instagram contest for the Doubleday Getaway and I won. Since I had to tag someone else, I tagged my daughter. Obviously she doesn't check out things her mama tags her in because today I got a text from her asking why she'd gotten a package from Penguin Random House. LOL! Not sure when she'll find time to read with her class work this semester but she is a reader so eventually she'll like the pressie.

"A novel of five lifelong friends who, in their sixties, decide to live together on a cocoa farm in Fiji, where they not only start a chocolate business but strengthen their friendships and rediscover themselves." I felt by the end I knew the characters and wanted them to be happy. Nice to see older women living lives that aren't focused on grandchildren alone.

kspenmoll Thanks for review; Another book I want to read.... 7y

20% in to this eARC and it's all female characters in their 60s, so my Mom's age. Seems like it would be a good movie and uplifting, plus a beautiful setting, a cocoa plantation in Fiji! Translated from the Norwegian so I guess it counts for #womenintranslation month still.

I should be reading my other book right now, but I can't put this down. The vivid descriptions, multifaceted characters and gorgeous wordplay pull me in. 1/2 done.

I wanted to like this--the premise was intriguing, but the execution had me losing interest.
