I Call Myself a Feminist
I Call Myself a Feminist: The View from Twenty-Five Women Under Thirty | Victoria Pepe
18 posts | 10 read | 18 to read
Is feminism still a dirty word? We asked twenty-five of the brightest, funniest, bravest young women what being a feminist in 2015 means to them.We hear from Laura Bates (of the Everyday Sexism Project), Reni Eddo-Lodge (award-winning journalist and author), Yas Necati (an eighteen-year-old activist), Laura Pankhurst, great-great granddaughter of Emmeline Pankhurst and an activist in her own right, comedian Sofie Hagen, engineer Naomi Mitchison and Louise O'Neill, author of the award-winning feminist Young Adult novel Only Ever Yours. Writing about a huge variety of subjects, we have Martha Mosse and Alice Stride on how they became feminists, Amy Annette addressing the body politic, Samira Shackle on having her eyes opened in a hostel for survivors of acid attacks in Islamabad, while Maysa Haque thinks about the way Islam has informed her feminism and Isabel Adomakoh Young insists that women don't have to be perfect. There are twelve other performers, politicians and writers who include Jade Anouka, Emily Benn, Abigail Matson-Phippard, Hajar Wright and Jinan Younis. Is the word feminist still to be shunned? Is feminism still thought of as anti-men rather than pro-human? Is this generation of feminists - outspoken, funny and focused - the best we've had for long while? Has the internet given them a voice and power previously unknown?Rachel Holmes' most recent book is Eleanor Marx: A Life; Victoria Pepe is a literary scout; Amy Annette is a comedy producer currently working on festivals including Latitude; Alice Stride works for Women's Aid and Martha Mosse is a freelance producer and artist.

I get really sad when I realise that we‘re still fighting the same things I was fighting at 13....except I think probably worse as we now have the vile, toxic abuse on the internet!
But it was still really interesting reading what today‘s young women are trying to do in the name of feminism.

Suet624 I get really sad about it too. 3y
Kaila-ann We were just talking about this at work today in terms of maternity leave. It‘s pretty sad. 3y
TrishB @Suet624 we‘re standing still in some areas. 3y
TrishB @Kaila-ann it‘s very different across the world I know! 3y

On my lunch break and reading more of this. I want to take photos of almost every page and post them but I'm restraining myself. So far every contribution is amazing and the quotes in between are fabulous.

Bargain book purchase of the day. There's an essay by Reni Eddo-Lodge which on its own makes it worth more than the $5 I paid! 😁

TrishB This looks good! 5y
tif @TrishB yes! Will also help me cross off the book riot read harder prompt 22 - an essay anthology! 5y

From the Women‘s March to #MeToo....the impact women have had this year in changing the conversation has been incredible.

Which is all the more reason I love that feminism is Merriam-Webster‘s Word of the Year.

If I could add anything, I would change it to intersectional feminism. 😊 #feminist #feminism #girlpower #fightlikeagirl

TrishB Cool 👍🏻 and agree totally. 5y

LOVE THIS BOOK! It's full of great quotes about women and feminism but most importantly it's full of really great essays about feminism and what it means to be a woman today. A must read for EVERYONE! I had to stop myself from saying 'yaaasss preach' out loud...😹

arlenefinnigan Cool nail varnish ☺ 6y
arlenefinnigan Sorry that's not a very feminist thing to say is it 😉 6y
Juwi @arlenefinnigan Of course it is!!! Feminists can rock lipstick and nail polish so thank you! 😎 6y

While I found a few of these essays brilliant, overall the book felt like a jumping off point for feminism. 3 stars

I'm so excited to start reading this next week for the #feministorchestra it features 25 modern female voices on the importance of feminism today and what the word means to them. Hopefully a good one to begin with and will provide some inspiration!
