The Tao of Pooh
The Tao of Pooh | Benjamin Hoff, Ernest Howard Shepard
Winnie-the-Pooh is The Bear for all Ages, and now hes more fun than ever before. Join in The Tao of Pooh! Winnie-the-Pooh has a certain way about him, a way of doing things that has made him the world's most beloved bear, and Pooh's Way, as Benjamin Hoff brilliantly demonstrates, seems strangely close to the ancient Chinese principles of Taoism.

I tried this one for my book from 1982 for my bday challenge and pretty quickly bailed. Found it pretty boring. I remember this being super popular when i was a young kid. Not for me.

I struggled to get into this as whimsy is not my natural style, but once I let myself just roll with it, I thought it was really good. It's short and fun and offers serious philosophies in a lighthearted way.

“One disease, long life; no disease, short life.” In other words, those who know what‘s wrong with them and take care of themselves accordingly will tend to live a lot longer than those who consider themselves perfectly healthy and neglect their weaknesses... The same goes for one‘s limitations, whether Tiggers know it or not - and Tiggers usually don‘t. That‘s the trouble with Tiggers, you know: they can do everything. Very unhealthy.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2 (4.5 Stars)

This book is very sweet. Pooh‘s involvement is quite delightful and the explanation of ancient philosophy is very comprehensible. There were some very profound nuggets to chew on and most of what was expressed in this book aligned with beliefs I already possess. #readwhatyoulovechallenge

The audio had me feeling "meh". I didn't take as much from this book as much as I wanted to. I don't if it was because of how he narrated, or if it was something else. Maybe I'll give it another try by reading it later down the road.

I picked this on audiobook for the #24b42019 because I thought it would be a short, sweet read to listen to to fill in gaps. It was that, but it also gave me a good layman‘s overview of Taoism. I think I may be picking up more on the subject in the future!!! #audiobook #readathon

The tagged book is a very interesting read on philosophical ideas, written in an entertaining style but thought provoking. It does not matter what our belief or religion is, if we seek a way to change our outlook, this book is great place to start. Illuminating.

I really enjoyed this slim volume. It is pleasant and easy to read. I would‘ve finished it in about a day (& I‘m a slow reader), but I had to get off the plane!

I expect it helps to know a little bit about Taoism to start with, otherwise you might be slightly put off by how the author describes how “wrong” all the other approaches to life are. I found it quite humorous & it‘s delightful to discover just how Tao Pooh is. That‘s why we love him.

Hoff has no idea about either Taoism or Pooh. He is an angry man who rails against capitalism, Christianity, science, and “Busy Backsons”, ironically whom he personifies with his condescending attitude toward anyone who is not an “uncarved block” like Pooh. I don‘t know much about Taoism, but I seriously doubt it is so intolerant. Instead of showing the Way, Hoff trashes everyone who does not know it, including all of Pooh‘s friends.

As for candy, we are not a big candy family, which is not to say we aren't each a huge sweet tooth. We just stick to chocolate and PEZ. My son has a collection of PEZ dispensers somewhere, but I can't find them. Could we have decluttered them in the move?!? I found these 2. #riotgrams @bookriot

I purchased this book waaaaaay back in college (along with the Te of Piglet) and discovered it today on Audible!!! I completely forgot about it! Read by Simon Vance (need I say more?) it's a nice blend of the gang from Hundred Acre Wood mixed with some philosophical teachings of Lao Tzu (6 B.C.)

I had heard good things about this book before I sat down to read it. I had also heard it being compared favorably to the "Pop Culture and Philosophy" series of books. While technically being in the same category, I did not like this book. It felt like the parallels between the two was a stretch, and the discussion about the philosophy/religion was being interrupted constantly with otherwise charming children's stories. Would not recommend.

I recall enjoying this book more when I first read it. I think the problem is that Hoff oversimplifies Taoism. While the use of Winnie the Pooh does help to break down Taoism in a relatable way, Hoff spends far too much time on trying to find parallels between a complex religious & philosophical tradition and a children's story. This went from being a five star read to a three star one. I will still read The Te of Piglet.
