The Tao of Pooh | Benjamin Hoff, Ernest Howard Shepard

@Chrissyreadit when I read what the person in the top right had to say, again I laughed, but I also wish I had his advice to take while suggesting this book. This is what I get for not doing my research… we end up with a book written by a misappropriating jerk who doesn‘t think research is important (probably because then no one would read his book). 🤣😂🤣

GingerAntics @TheBookHippie @ravenlee @JaclynW @RavenLovelyReads @AlaSkaat @Chrissyreadit @kspenmoll sorry guys, totally dropped the ball on this one. Universally, Piglet is seen as nothing but a bigoted rant by Hoff, so we may need to skip that one. Thoughts? 2y
ravenlee I haven‘t done this week‘s section yet, but from your clips I‘m not dying to keep up. I‘m okay with dropping this festering turd and moving on to something better in a couple of weeks. That said, if we decide to stick it out I‘ll give it a try. 2y

GingerAntics @ravenlee I‘m partly curious to see if it goes back to the wonderful, frolic of the intro and first chapter from last week, or if Hoff can‘t pull out of the death roll he‘s now in. Part of me wants to chuck it across the room and go read something else. No lie. (Plus it‘s NaNoWriMo and I couldn‘t help thinking, I paused writing for THIS?!) 2y
Chrissyreadit I‘m going to hold off reading unless you all continue and start raving about how good it‘s gotten. 2y
GingerAntics @Chrissyreadit 😂🤣😂 I don‘t blame you. I‘ve assassinated this thing today. 2y

GingerAntics @TheBookHippie @ravenlee @JaclynW @RavenLovelyReads @AlaSkaat @Chrissyreadit @kspenmoll Sorry guys, I totally dropped the ball on this one. I thought I‘d done the research in this book, but I didn‘t really dig into it. I just skimmed the surface and trusted what people I generally trust told me about this book. 2y
ravenlee Sounds like Machiavelli. 2y
GingerAntics @ravenlee oh, I hadn‘t put that together. Hm. That‘s interesting. The Machiavelli of the east and west. I wonder how they compare now. That probably a good description of it. 2y
ravenlee The Art of War was also written during this period, which helps with context, too. I believe Machiavelli‘s writing was intended less as prescriptive, “a strong leader should…,” and more observational, “a strong leader seems to…” I‘d guess the Tao‘s celebration of archers and such takes a similar approach - but it‘s just a guess. 2y
GingerAntics @ravenlee yeah, without reading it it‘s hard to tell. I think it‘s sort of that way, too. At least that‘s the impression I get. 2y

@Chrissyreadit I‘m usually really good at doing research before choosing a book like this, but I dropped the ball on this one. I couldn‘t find anything at first (which is where I stopped before), but when I looked up what taoists think about this book, I found a TROVE of issues.

GingerAntics @TheBookHippie @ravenlee @JaclynW @RavenLovelyReads @AlaSkaat @Chrissyreadit @kspenmoll I‘m absolutely heartbroken to find that my beloved Pooh has been used to misappropriate Taoism and eastern philosophy. Next time, I promise to find out what the author(s) ate for lunch the day they started writing the book before suggesting it. 2y
kspenmoll I did not look into the book at all either, so stop blaming yourself! But finding out an author‘s lunch tastes might be good…so what does everyone think? Abandon? 2y
GingerAntics @kspenmoll because obviously, if some author is going to eat something really gross for lunch, we don‘t want to read their weird book anyway. 🤣😂🤣 2y

TheBookHippie We can start over with something else -it happens -I‘ve done it as well. 😅 and ughhh 2y
marleed I‘ve found your thread on this very interesting. I know you wish you‘d chosen something else but you‘ve enlightened me. I read this book many years ago. It‘s still on my shelves. I knew nothing about the author until your discussions. So thank you! 2y
GingerAntics @marleed I just wish I‘d done better research. I‘m still on the fence a little. I‘m kind of hoping it gets better, but I‘m just not sure. Our discussion tomorrow should be fun. This has been a rather popular book. I feel like the only one annoyed in a way. 2y
JaclynW @GingerAntics I agree with @kspenmoll You shouldn't blame yourself. Some books are hits, some misses. But we all have learned something that we didn't know before, in this sense, I consider it a success. 2y
GingerAntics @kspenmoll I just screen shot all of these suggestions. They sound interesting. (edited) 2y
GingerAntics @kspenmoll I just looked these up. I am so excited to read all of these!!! Rationality is kind of expensive, but we can deal with that later. Neither of my libraries have any of them but Eichmann (and that one sounds SO good). I also found another book that goes by topics and covers a bunch of philosophers similar to 2y
kspenmoll @GingerAntics I looked at what my son at on his shelf… Pinker is not in paperback yet. I think most of the others are or are less expensive. 😀 2y
kspenmoll The whole Pooh/ taoism issue made me sad- i have not joined in discussion but will this week. Just feel blah today 2y
GingerAntics @kspenmoll oh lord, this week‘s reading really was depressing. Don‘t feel like you have to if you‘re not in the mood. 2y
kspenmoll Plus I have so enjoyed this group & learned so much…💕 @TheBookHippie @Chrissyreadit @Jaclyn @ravenlee @marleed @RavenLovelyReads @AlaSkaat (edited) 2y
GingerAntics @kspenmoll I think it‘s still something we‘ll most likely get to. It‘s probably best to wake for paperback (I found the ebook and even that was oddly expensive, like more than the physical book), but I definitely don‘t think we‘re hurting for options, that‘s for sure. As soon as a have a job again, I won‘t have to worry about book prices quite as much. 2y
GingerAntics @kspenmoll we do have a great group!!! 💙💙💙 2y
