Walking on Water
Walking on Water: Reflections on Faith and Art | Madeleine L'Engle
The bestselling author of such classics as A Wrinkle in Time, A Swiftly Tilting Planet, and Certain Women reflects on art and faith with the fierce intelligence and imaginative daring that have made her one of our most cherished authors. The task of the artist, as she sees it, involves listening, keeping oneself fully aware, and then responding to creation with one's own art.

“Art is an affirmation of life, a rebuttal of death”. About 2 years ago, my pastor took a sabbatical & gave the congregation 3 books she was reading during that time. I just now read one of them. 😂 I have mixed feelings about it. There‘s some good points & quotes, & I learned more about her life. My favorite chapter was about authors who try to write for children & her belief that children are more capable than adults think. So true! 👇

Scochrane26 This also completed my one bingo I‘m going to get this month for #bookspinbingo. @TheAromaofBooks Books were: Mrs. Everything, The Nickel Boys, Cooked, Walking on Water, & Long Way Down. Also counts on #summerfunjr as yellow cover book. (edited) 4y

I loved it. I have a lot of post it‘s in this book but that doesn‘t reflect on how much I underlined. I wish I could have known Madeleine. I want to be her friend.

Legitimately felt my heart skip a beat when I read that L‘Engle‘s childhood favorite book was my childhood favorite book.

“In a very real sense not one of us is qualified, but it seems that God continually chooses the most unqualified to do His work, to bear His glory. If we are qualified, we tend to think that we have done the job ourselves. If we are forced to accept our evident lack of qualification, then there's no danger that we will confuse God's work with our own, or God's glory with our own.” Madeleine L'Engle, Walking on Water: Reflections on Faith & Art

I loved this so much. As a someone who creates and is a Christian, I felt like she was speaking right to me. I encourage artists Christian or non-Christian alike to read this. She has so many beautiful things to say about the act of creating art. 😊🎨🎨🎨🙏

"I sit on my favorite rock, looking over the brook, to take time away from busyness, time to BE. I've long since stopped feeling guilty about taking BEing time; it's something we all need for our spiritual health, and often we don't take enough of it...And as I listen to the silence, I learn that my feelings about art and my feelings about the Creator of the Universe are inseparable. To try to talk about art and about Christianity is for me one.."

Here's just a little peak at my favorite tattoo. It's a dandelion blown in the wind, from which the seeds transform into four birds in flight. It's not strictly bookish, but it represents freedom like I've only found in words.

I've always loved her writing, especially because she does engage with ideas of faith. And thinking about how to blend faith and art is a good thing for me to stop and reflect on right now.

saresmoore This is one of my absolute favorites. I highly recommend reading it alongside A Ring of Endless Light. So many of her beautiful musings from Walking on Water live and breathe in that story. 8y
