@GingerAntics and I loved this series (ok she‘s a bit fanatical about it), so whenever it‘s free I have to highly recommend it.

GingerAntics 😂🤣😂 I‘ve fallen in love with the concept! I also love how they can solve all these crimes without any forensics. 11mo

I actually finished this yesterday but forgot to post. Whoops! The story is just as good as I remember it. I‘m not the biggest fan of the narrator. She‘s American, so her “Welsh” accent sounds more like a mix of someone mocking an Irish and an Indian accent. It gets worse when she‘s doing the Danes‘ accents. I‘m also not sure she knows any Welsh, so her pronunciations are suspect.
👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

GingerAntics I got the audiobooks specifically to get the proper pronunciations. Other Woodbury audiobooks are done by Tom Mumford, a real Welshman who is absolutely brilliant, but apparently he wasn‘t available for this series (which is unfortunate because it is my favorite series). #SarahWoodbury #TheGoodKnight #audiobook #WelshHistory #GarethandGwen 2y

I am binging the audiobooks for this series this month, just because I bloody well feel like it. It‘s July. Try to stop me.

GingerAntics @Texreader the covers have been changed again. I actually like the simplicity of these with the medieval style art work. 2y

This felt a little all over the place. I wanted to love this one, but there were so many times where nothing made sense in the story. The characters made the book worth reading though, even if I only ended up caring for them midway through.

Mrs_B Free in the UK too! Awesome! 3y
Texreader @Bookworm54 @Mrs_B Glad y‘all grabbed it and that it was free in the UK too. @gingerantics and I were hooked and kept buying her books in the series and enjoyed them together. Unfortunately I lost track once we caught up with the author and had to wait for the next book. Someday I‘ll pick up the series where I left off. It‘s memorable and very good if you like historical fiction, intrigue, and mysteries. 3y
GingerAntics Thinking of getting these as paperbacks actually. 3y
Texreader @GingerAntics Oooh are they available? I‘d probably like to do the same. 3y
GingerAntics @Texreader they sure are! I looked for the paperbacks on a whim. I honestly expected them to be ebooks and audiobooks only, but they are available in paperbacks, too. 3y
GingerAntics Oh, the Welsh guard series is available in paperback, too!!! 3y

Book ideas for #Wales for #readingeurope2020

Libby1 If you want something really interesting for your fiction try Under Milk Wood, which was a play written for radio. Your non-fiction choice is about England, not Wales! Any #WelshLittens here who could recommend a good non-fic about your beautiful country? 4y
Texreader @Libby1 Apparently some of the nonfiction book is about Wales based on the research I did on LibraryThing. I bought the book in London a few years ago but I‘ve managed to lose it! So I can‘t confirm. It‘s lost somewhere in my house with the other books I bought when we visited England and Wales! (I‘m a tad upset with myself for losing books! How can that happen?) 4y
Libby1 😊 4y

umbrellagirl @Texreader I read it recently and it‘s really just about England. Mostly London. 4y
Texreader @umbrellagirl @Libby1 Ok that‘s confirmed. It needs to be taken off the list. Thanks to you both for setting that straight. But I still want to find the darned thing! 😊 I‘ve lost it along with a book I got in London about the Bayeux Tapestry. 4y
umbrellagirl @Texreader I hope you do find it. I enjoyed it. 4y
rabbitprincess Have you read Sharon Kay Penman‘s Welsh Princes trilogy, or Edith Pargeter‘s Brothers of Gwynedd quartet? Both good hist fic about Wales. Can also recommend the Fiona Griffiths series by Harry Bingham, set in Cardiff. First book is 4y
rabbitprincess For non-fiction, I have this on my shelves, but I haven‘t read it yet: 4y

Ebook FREE today! Hurry! Ages ago @GingerAntics and I read this one, loved the story, and went on an ebook buying splurge and read all in the series that existed at the time. (She‘s passed me way up on the books in the series that have come out since.) It was so much fun and they‘re such good books and easy reads! So I strongly urge you to go get this one now!

GingerAntics I second this motion!!! I love this series so much. I‘ve even preordered the one coming out July 19th. She seems to love to release these bad boys in July. They‘re always right in time for my birthday. 💙💙💙 Of course, I will promptly inhale the book as soon as it is released. 4y
Texreader @GingerAntics I haven‘t seen the Litsy July birthday list come out yet! What day is it? 4y
GingerAntics It‘s not on there. 😇 23rd (edited) 4y

Choosing one “best” of the year just isn‘t going to happen. Discovering Sarah Woodbury as an author. I adore her Gareth and Gwen Mysteries and can‘t wait for the next one. Her spin on the King Arthur legend wasn‘t bad either.

#sarahwoodbury #garethandgwen #kingarthur #wales #historicalfiction #2018 #bestread #bestread2018 #history

LazyDays It is a tough choice, for discovery I think Backman opened up a rabbit hole for me. I normally just read dark mysteries/ crime/thriller. Everything else was to musy 😂 Backman helped me ease into it. 5y
LazyDays I'll have to check out the medieval Mysteries! 5y

I really wanted to love this...a series of mysteries set in medieval Wales with a little romance thrown in. But I would probably rate it between a pick and so-so (3/5⭐️). A plus is that this was actually based on some true events. And while the mystery was fine, I found the writing a bit too simplistic and the pace too slow in parts. However there was a surprise twist ending that I didn‘t see coming.

I do plan to give the 2nd book a fair try. 🔽

robinb Just to be clear, I didn‘t hate it, but I‘ve read better. This took me longer to read than usual as my interest tended to lag...guess I just wasn‘t fully engaged. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 5y

Current read on this rainy, stormy Thursday in the Southeast (U.S.)...be safe out there folks! 😊

Chrissyreadit Do you like it? I‘ve enjoyed her other series. 5y
robinb @Chrissyreadit So far, so good. I‘m only about 15% in right now. What else have you read by her? 5y
Chrissyreadit After Cilmeri series. I‘m a couple behind - I think read through 8 or 9. 5y
robinb @Chrissyreadit This is my first series from her. I‘ll have to look that one up...thanks! 5y
CoverToCoverGirl I‘ll have give this one a try! 5y

Talk about a shock at the end!!! I absolutely adored every minute of this book. The pacing was perfect. If anything it seemed to go by so fast. 4 hours (max) start to finish. I would definitely recommend this book. This is the first free book I‘ve read that has made me want to read the next book. I can‘t wait until I can get my hands on the next one.

GingerAntics @Texreader the cover does make it seem like there is going to be more romance than there is. I did enjoy the little hint of the history and continued love between Gareth and Gwen, though. I am so glad you read this book and I found your review. This was such a great little read. I can‘t wait for the next one. 6y
Texreader The next Kindle book is 3.99 but the first four as a set are 8.99. So I got the set as it was a slightly better deal for the next three. So I have three more to read! So glad you liked it too! What a find. And I kept putting it off because of the cover and the title! 6y
GingerAntics @Texreader I‘ll have to look into that. The prequel is $2.99 and the next ones are $3.99...I haven‘t seen a set, but I‘ll double check. I‘ve definitely seen them on there before. Thanks for the heads up. 6y

The cover of this book, a freebie on Amazon Prime, makes it look like a romance. It‘s not. It‘s a very good historical fiction novel based on real events in Wales during the Stephen/Maud civil war in England. It‘s a murder mystery based on the death of a Welsh king Anarawd. I liked it enough to buy the next three on Kindle. There are many books in the series so I‘m looking forward to it.

GingerAntics Oh, I just got it free on iBooks, so it must be a promotional thing. I can‘t wait to read this. Thanks for the heads up!!! 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage I‘ve enjoyed some of her other books! 6y
Texreader @GingerAntics I hope you like it! It looks like Amazon has a lot of first books in series free. I‘ve read a few now. This is the first one good enough to pay to continue the series. 6y

Texreader @BarbaraTheBibliophage She seems very prolific! 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage She sure does. I looked on iBooks and found so many—including a few freebies! 6y
GingerAntics I‘ve had the same thing. You can peruse free books for kindle and iBooks. A lot of times it‘s the first book in a series to get you interested, but I‘ve rarely ever been interested enough to decide to spend book money on more. Fingers crossed for this one. 6y
GingerAntics This book is going by so quickly. 2 hours in and I‘m already half way through. I can‘t get the next book for at least a month, but it‘s so good I can‘t stop reading. I‘m definitely going to need the next book. 6y

The year is 1143. Was the word “smarmy” in wide use then?

LiteraryinLawrence Hmmm, good point... 6y
Moray_Reads OED puts first recorded usage of smarm at 1847 so I definitely think this is anachronistic! 6y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Wow - that just jumps right out. 😬 Im thinking probably not! 6y
KathyWheeler I had a similar issue with the Jackaby books. Some of the language the characters used just didn‘t fit the time period. At one point, Abby uses the term “serial killer,” which didn‘t come into usage until the 1970s. Those books are set in the 1890s. 6y
GingerAntics Probably not, but I‘m sure there was another word of that meaning that no longer exists. lol 6y
