A detailed account, overly so in places. I‘d never heard much about Holmes before watching a video on YouTube a few months ago. I find it frustrating that there‘s little confirmed truth about his crimes. A fascinating tale though.

There is so much misinformation out there. Adam Selzer went to primary sources to write this book. Even many of those are not reliable, but Selzer does his best to sift through all the information and try to come up with the most plausible story of Holmes. It was good, and for enjoyment of/interest in the book, I‘d actually give it 3.5 stars (good), but I really want to give it an overall of 4 stars for all the detailed research. Cont in comments.

LibraryCin I feel like this should be the primary book on Holmes, with all the research that went into it. Selzer also looks at other books/articles written about Holmes and looks deeper into where the information came from for those works to determine how legitimate the information is (including Eric Larson‘s “The Devil in the White City”). Well worth the read for anyone interested in learning more about Holmes. 5y

Ruthiella I thought the Larson book was entertaining but he did an awful lot of assuming about Holmes. Good to know this book is available! 😀 5y

so-so

It wasnt a BAD book exactly. I think that after reading a lot of really decent HH Holmes books last year, a part of me expected it to live up to those and it didnt. Really the main part of Holmes life was over by page 150. I really wished for more on the Murder Castle and his crimes.

There isn't enough information to know what he really did or didn't do. Lots of speculation and circumstantial evidence. The media (newspapers) back in the 1890's made up stuff just like today. Pity because the author meticulously researched material on Holmes and revealed just about all that is known.

ptkpepe98 I haven't read this, but did read "The Devil in the White City" years ago. Fascinating to learn how policing was then, and consider how it has evolved, and yet, it remains difficult to identify serial killers despite all of the technology we now possess. 7y
