To The Stars
To The Stars: The Autobiography of George Takei | George Takei
12 posts | 6 read | 4 to read
Best known as Mr. Sulu, helmsman of the Starship Enterprise and captain of the Starship Excelsior, George Takei is beloved by millions as part of the command team that has taken audiences to new vistas of adventure in Star Trekthe unprecedented television and feature film phenomenon. From the programs birth in the changing world of the 1960s and death at the hands of the network to its rebirth in the hearts and minds of loyal fans, the Star Trek story has blazed its own path into our recent cultural history, leading to a series of blockbuster feature films and three new versions of Star Trek for television. The Star Trek story is one of boundless hope and crushing disappointment, wrenching rivalries and incredible achievements. It is also the story of how, after nearly thirty years, the cast of characters from a unique but poorly rated television show have come to be known to millions of Americans and people around the world as family. For George Takei, the Star Trek adventure is intertwined with his personal odyssey through adversity in which four-year-old George and his family were forced by the United States government into internment camps during World War II. Star Trek means much more to George Takei than an extraordinary career that has spanned thirty years. For an American whose ideals faced such a severe test, Star Trek represents a shining embodiment of the American Dreamthe promise of an optimistic future in which people from all over the world contribute to a common destiny.

🎧📚 I LOVED this book! I melted into the pages! You can only imagine the life the author has led until you read this. The story he tells predates his birth and sheds so much light on the Star Trek world he was involved in!! It‘s his life. The good, the bad, the rude, the sad, the fun and the amazing!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/4

Twainy I‘m still adding books from the June readathon … sorry. 3y
Prairiegirl_reading I read his graphic novel last year and it is also excellent. I‘m not a huge Star Trek fan but I can imagine how interesting this one would be. 😄 3y
Twainy @Prairiegirl_reading there‘s a graphic novel? I‘m going to look for that. 3y
Prairiegirl_reading It‘s mostly about his childhood and the internment camps but it is excellent! Sorry I should have tagged it for you previously. 😄 3y
Twainy @Prairiegirl_reading thank you. I‘ve heard him talk about some of the things in the book before, it‘s genuinely very interesting. 3y

From time in internment camps to political activism to his acting career, I enjoyed spending some time with and getting to know George Takei. He comes across as nice, generous, clever, and funny. I think he‘d be funny to hang out with. This book was published in 1994, so it‘s interesting to see what was left out. On it goes! #LMPBC

Lindy Have you read his new memoir in comics format? I loved it. 4y
Hooked_on_books @Lindy I‘ve heard him talk about it on a podcast (he was marvelous), but I‘m not a fan of the GN format. I‘m thrilled that he did it, though, and his timing is unsurprising given current attitudes. 4y

Great #bookmail day! My #LMPBC has arrived. I look forward to spending some time with George. @Shadowfat I can tell you have a cat! My one dog had her head inside the mailer after I removed the book, sniffing and licking. 😆 And @Soubhiville my Christmas box has arrived! I‘m super excited to see what‘s inside, but I‘ll be good and wait two more days. 😇 Thank you!

Soubhiville I‘m glad it got there in time! ❤️💚❤️🎄 4y
Shadowfat Haha yes I have cats and a dog 🙂 I'm glad it made it to you! 4y

I'm so glad I finally read this! This autobiography is from the 90s, so it covers his childhood and career up to that point. Now to watch more Star Trek over break! It's on it's way to you @Hooked_on_books . @BookishBelle @Wife #lmpbc group B.

Hooked_on_books I really look forward to this. I know a little about his childhood and look forward to learning more. And that bookmark is perfect! 4y

I was trying to get a little extra reading time in, since I hadn't much opportunity all weekend, but my munchkins had other ideas regarding my book choice. Their choices were the ever popular "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom" and "Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear?".

March stats and my non-bullet journal book log 😁

3 books read in March (YTD total - 8)
1 ebook, 2 print
All 3 books #MtTBRchallenge
Homegoing
Among Others
The Jefferson Bible

2 novels (1 fantasy), 1 nonfiction (theology)

Started this month - To the Stars by George Takei
On deck - I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith #RtC

I'm trying to go back to reading one book at a time. I'm a bit burned out trying to juggle multiple reads.

An idealistic teenaged George Takei goes to a camp for young leaders in the 1950s, and is inspired by this verse to "change the world." Given current events, this verse struck me as poignant.

Took this along with me yeaterday so that Uncle George could hold my hand during an unexpected, unplanned dental procedure. I grabbed it on the way out the door thinking it would be a lighthearted read, forgetting it starts with his childhood imprisonment during WWII. Oops. Still a good read, just not the laughs I needed that moment. I'm sure those will be plentiful in later chapters.
