One Across, Two Down
One Across, Two Down | Ruth Rendell
3 posts | 5 read | 1 to read
Two things interest Stanley Manning: crossword puzzles, and the substantial sum his wife Vera stands to inherit when his mother-in-law dies. Otherwise, life at 61 Lanchester Road is a living hell. For Mrs. Kinaway lives with them nowand she will stop at nothing to tear their marriage apart. One afternoon, Stanley sets aside his crossword puzzles and changes all their lives forever... In One Across, Two Down, master crime writer Ruth Rendell describes a man whose strained sanity and stained reputation transform him from a witless loser into a killer afraid of his own shadow. Mischievously plotted, smart, maddeningly entertaining, One Across, Two Down is a dark delightclassic Rendell. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Mehso-so

Finished my #birthdaychallenge read...it was ok, definitely not in the same league as Agatha Christie but way better than my Sidney Sheldon read. Just finished frying up a batch of potato latkes for my boys, as tonight is the first night of Hanukkah 🕎 I burnt the last few latkes because I was busy checking my Litsy feed!😜
Happy Holidays to all ❤❤❤

Lynnsoprano 😂😂 At least it's good to know I'm not the only one checking Litsy while cooking. 7y

#birthdayChallenge 🎂I'm up to publishing year 1971 📖
Hoping this female crime writer is better than Sidney Sheldon 🕵🏻‍♀️🙏🏻😐

KarenUK Fingers crossed for you! 😊 7y
writerlibrarian Rendell is usually a good choice in a "noir" style. Not in Patricia Highsmith's league but then who is. I usually recommend Rendell to mystery/thriller reader who like Elizabeth Georges for example. (edited) 7y
Michelle_mck I start my birthday challenge on the New Year! My starting year is 1977 and I'm starting with this one 7y

Cinfhen @writerlibrarian I'm not familiar with either Patricia Highsmith or Elizabeth George 😬I will check out those names for future #birthdaychallenge reads! 7y
Cinfhen I'm loving the#birthdaychallenge @Michelle_mck 😊if you enjoy your 1977 selection, let me know! Maybe I will read it for my 1977 choice! 7y
Cinfhen Thanks @KarenUK 😘Are you familiar with Ruth Rendell? (edited) 7y
writerlibrarian @Cinfhen well then I'll be sure to check if if you liked Rendell. Highsmith is wonderful you could start with 7y
KarenUK @cinfhen only as tv adaptations in the 80's/90's (inspector Wexford) .... but my dad is a big mystery fan.. and loves the books.... 7y
Michelle_mck @Cinfhen I will let you know - it's going to be one of my first reads if the year, fingers crossed it's good 7y
quirkyreader I love the writing by both Sidney Sheldon and Ruth Rendell. A word of warning though. Always check the book tittles, because she is one of the authors publishers play silly buggers with, i.e different countries different tittles for the same book. This has happened many times with me. I'm like "I haven't read this one". I get it home and I already have a copy of it with a different name. 7y
Cinfhen Thanks @quirkyreader for the heads up! I hate when publishers pull that 💩 7y
Cinfhen @writerlibrarian I can't believe I didn't know the author of 7y
Cinfhen I'm totally going to read it😀thanks again @writerlibrarian 7y
Cinfhen Good luck ☘️ @Michelle_mck I've had some hits & misses with my #birthdaychallenge reads, but it's really fun to discover new authors and to get a glimpse of how much literature has changed💕😊📚 (edited) 7y
