Ghostwritten | David Mitchell
By the New York Times bestselling author of The Bone Clocks and Cloud Atlas A brave new book for a brave new worldfueled by a brilliant imagination and buoyed by beautifully descriptive writing.USA Today A gallery attendant at the Hermitage. A young jazz buff in Tokyo. A crooked British lawyer in Hong Kong. A disc jockey in Manhattan. A physicist in Ireland. An elderly woman running a tea shack in rural China. A cult-controlled terrorist in Okinawa. A musician in London. A transmigrating spirit in Mongolia. What is the common thread of coincidence or destiny that connects the lives of these nine souls in nine far-flung countries, stretching across the globe from east to west? What pattern do their linked fates form through time and space? A writer of pyrotechnic virtuosity and profound compassion, a mind to which nothing human is alien, David Mitchell spins genres, cultures, and ideas like gossamer threads around and through these nine linked stories. Many forces bind these lives, but at root all involve the same universal longing for connection and transcendence, an axis of commonality that leads in two directionsto creation and to destruction. In the end, as lives converge with a fearful symmetry, Ghostwritten comes full circle, to a point at which a familiar ideathat whether the planet is vast or small is merely a matter of perspectivestrikes home with the force of a new revelation. It marks the debut of a writer of astonishing gifts. Praise for Ghostwritten [Mitchell] has a gift for fictions natural pleasuresintricate surprises, insidiously woven narratives, ingenious voices. The New York Times Book Review Elegantly composed, gracefully plotted and full of humor.Los Angeles Times Unlike so many of the chroniclers of the twenty-first-century pastichean industry dominated by ad men and feature-writers, not novelistsMitchell has set out to craft actual characters, not archetypes. The result is a dazzling piece of work. The Washington Post Mitchell deftly sketches each character to such a compelling extent that you become totally immersed. . . . His nine characters and their random but fateful interactions provide a playful, suspenseful foray into our ever-shrinking world.Entertainment Weekly An intricately assembled Faberg egg of a novel, full of sly and sometimes beautiful surprises. . . . In an era in which much literary fiction is characterized by unearned ironies and glib cynicism, its hard not to be impressed by the humanism that animates Mitchells book.New York Gripping and innovative. . . . [Ghostwritten serves] to illustrate the strange interconnectivity of the modern world and the improvisatory nature of fate. The New York Times A daring novel, uniquely structured and just as uniquely compelling. The Denver Post From the Hardcover edition.

It‘s late. I‘m still awake…but just barely!

So, I‘m kicking off my first official #Scarathlon2022 post of October with a podcast episode of GhostHoney‘s Dream Machine. Gentle chaos is just what I need to lull me into a sweetly spooky sleep.

With this post *and* my early bird entries, I‘ve got +56 points to start. 👻

Let‘s go, #TeamMonsterMash! Happy October! 🎃

The last book by Mitchell I read was a Pan. The more I enjoyed this one. This is Mitchell at his best. I love how he adds story to story and everything is a big puzzle. Couldn't stop reading, and happily this is a book one has to reread at some point to fully understand all the connections.

After reading and loving the latest Mitchell book I have decided to work my way up from the beginning a lot will be re-reads looking out for the crossover characters however this was a first read for me.

I think if I had read this first I would have loved it but I must confess I love the later novels more.

This was an interesting 1st step into Mitchell‘s giant book. It introduces key characters and concepts that can be followed in later books.

SamAnne I‘ve been thinking about doing this in 2021. I‘ve only read Cloud Atlas and Utopia Avenue. 3y

At my parents' house (bubbled with them) and I love that I have a little cupboard of books I've read here... it's like going back in time reading-style (and there's another layer behind).
Some of these books were amazing ❤❤❤

This is a very clever book. At times I think it was maybe a bit too clever for me and required more concentration than I was capable of but I did enjoy when I noticed distant links between characters. I‘ve heard that‘s what David Mitchell is all about. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

My 2 week staycation starts now! After reading @BookwormM ‘s great review of Utopia Avenue I figured this might be a good time to try David Mitchell. And if I like his first book, it will be just the excuse I need to go to the bookstore and buy more books!

BookwormM Hope you enjoy it 🤞 4y

David Mitchell's debut novel follows a series of characters whose lives are interconnected. If you like it, you will definitely like Cloud Atlas and Mitchell's other books.

I love everything David Mitchell does. I‘m always nervous approaching the early works of my favorite writers, but this was great, like seeing the blueprints for his later masterpieces.

Joanne1 I feel the same way reading early works by favourite authors. 6y
KateFulfordAuthor If you need another recommendation, may I point you to my People‘s Book Prize nominated debut? Sassy female narrative, laugh out dialogue and a pacy plot. Check the link in the bio for 2 free chapters, reviews and more. 6y

Does anyone else stress out about finishing a book before going on vacation?? I do this to myself all the time, mostly because I hate traveling w/paper books and just use my kindle. I‘m trying to read 60+ pages every night for the next 3 days, on top of all the other vacation prep 😓 Lucky for me, I am loving this book, and Saturday I‘ll be in Spain 😊

MarriedtoMrT I do. 🙋🏻‍♀️ Have a great trip! 6y

#aroundtheworld with books, option #2: David Mitchell's books travel the globe (and through time) to tell complex, multi layered, interconnected tales. The only one of his that I haven't loved was Number 9 Dream, am I alone in that?

#jubilantjuly @RealLifeReading

TrishB Nope - I didn't finish that one! 7y

Round 6 of our #tenatatime TBR project! I get really excited when I finish a stack and get to pick ten new ones! This also means that I've successfully read 50 books from our overflowing piles......I haven't been very successful at not adding too many new ones, though. It evens out, I guess. #toomanybooks. Now, what to read first?

Zelma Something to sink your teeth into? The Son. Pure fun? China Rich Girlfriend. 👍 7y

Finished with a roaring headache, so I'm gobbling aspirin and chasing it down with cashew almond coconut chocolate butter. I wish I felt I'd understood this book more completely since it spoke to me in so many ways, but I think it will require a reread before I have a handle on it. Mitchell's prose is lovely, as always, and I enjoy running into the same characters in different books. Definitely a pick.

Been skiving off work this week since the boss hasn't had time to okay my outline. As a result I finished Bach and the High Baroque & A Thread of Grace, and began the audiobook of Ghostwritten which is incredibly unsettling, and The Ballad of Black Tom on Kindle. The pic is of the last of my recent ARCs which came in yesterday. Right now, though, I just want to sleep.

Mehso-so

Meh. I powered through and finished it. The book is comprised of several stories that are interconnected. The first two or three were good and had me interested. The middle was rough for me though I can't say exactly why. They just didn't grab me. The last three were better. But this just wasn't the book for me. I just didn't get it.

I am completely stalled halfway through this one. I blazed through the first 65 pages or so and then hit a brick wall. It's been slow going since then so now the dilemma is do I power through the next 170 pages or come back to it later considering my TBR shelves are about to topple over from the weight?

LindsayReads I really dislike forcing myself to read something...I find I'll start actively disliking a book the more I feel like I *have* to read it. So I say bail for greener pastures! I've never read this one though, so I can't say whether it's redeemable. 7y
DiruVamp @LindsayReads exactly! It's not fun anymore if I have to force myself to read. I found myself skimming the last few pages. The only reason why I'm hesitant to quit is its over 400 pages and I did make it halfway through LOL but if it doesn't recapture my interest soon I may set it aside. 7y
sprainedbrain I hate that feeling... but if it's a chore, put it aside! 7y

Welcome to the 'I need more books like I need a hole in the head' International Edition. All of these came from England because...well...I am a sucker for covers that aren't easily found here LOL I think I will start with Ghostwritten it sounds very intriguing!

EricQiao Journey Under the Midnight Sun is awesome! I read it in Chinese. There's a Korean TV show based on it and a Japanese movie. The movie is highly recommended! 7y
DiruVamp @EricQiao ohhhhh I will definitely check out the movie! Thank you! 7y

I LOOOOVED this book when I first read it back in 2015. It's David Mitchell's first novel and it's just so good and different. It's hard to explain what this is about - basically the world is connected in mysterious ways - but DM's writing is incredible, engaging, intelligent, and he makes each of his characters come alive. I'm a serious fan.

My other #orangecovers shoutout: A Manual for Cleaning Women, 5 🌟all around. #photoadaynov16

The first books I ever read by the author, and I was hooked. The writing style and the story telling are too both no matter what genre he touches. Well worth your time.
