Funny, sharp and strange little book. Inspired by the Watergate scandal, but can be read as a satire on corruption/abuse of power in general. My third Spark (after The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie and The Girls of Slender Means) and probably my least favorite. Any recommendations for which Spark should be my fourth?

#NunLit

Graywacke I enjoyed this oddball one a lot 7mo
kspenmoll I have not started this yet, but plan to 7mo
Liz_M I also enjoyed the tagged. Strike that, I think I would have liked it if I read it at a different time. (edited) 7mo
jlhammar @Graywacke I'll have to give that one a try. Thanks, Dan! 7mo

Look what I found inside my second-hand copy of The Abbess of Crewe. A dot-matrix printed slip from 1992! What a rush of nostalgia!

merelybookish Fun to discover a little artifact like that. 2y
rwmg Are you going to return it to Barmicoats? They have been waiting for 30 years. 2y
Dilara @rwmg Believe it or not, I did look up Barmicoats on the Internet, just in case! 2y
Dilara @merelybookish Isn't it! 😁 2y

I think I might be about to start on my first Muriel Spark. The Abbess of Crewe should be a welcome change after Bound to Violence!

The blurb says this is a morality tale where fact can be “swallowed up in the sublimities of myth”. Crewe is England and the blurb writer says “it is certain to bring acute pangs of recognition and knowing laughter to every American”. Written in 1974 - I confess a love for Muriel Spark and this American laughed but the recognition is probably for every nation that strives for their myth to triumph. 4⭐️

#booked2020 @BarbaraTheBibliophage @4thhouseontheleft @Cinfhen
Just put down my 'finish in a day' choice and Muriel Spark never fails to dissapoint with her satire of watergate set in the small community of an English abbey. With bugging devices, jesuit priest burglars, + nuns having affairs this bk was a joy + i never fail to smile as I'm led down paths i didn't expect. I cd have picked this for head covering but i have a fine hat waiting.

BarbaraTheBibliophage Nice review and pick for this prompt. Good job! ♥️👊🏻📚 4y
Cinfhen Hahahahaha/ looking forward to your “fine hat” 😂😁 4y

This short but not so sweet novella was inspired by the Watergate scandal. This is not my favorite Spark, but still very enjoyable. Those who have an interest in Nixson and Watergate might get more out of it then me. ⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

My husband is away on a business trip ( day 8 of 14). It is Saturday. The kids are hungry. I should be making dinner...... or drinking a glass of wine and reading a book about naughty nuns... #sorrynotsorry

Lola Ah...posts like this make me feel so much better about my own choices 😂Enjoy! 7y
Louise Hahaha! 7y
Wilkie Thanks @Lola in my world it is never too early for wine-time and Hot dogs are a perfectly acceptable dinner for growing girls.😬😬 7y
Lola @Wilkie Absolutely! Quesadillas or cheese and crackers with a side of fruit also perfectly acceptable IMO!! 😋 7y
