We Think The World of You
We Think The World of You | J.R. Ackerley
5 posts | 2 read | 7 to read
We Think the World of You combines acute social realism and dark fantasy, and was described by J.R. Ackerley as a fairy tale for adults. Frank, the narrator, is a middle-aged civil servant, intelligent, acerbic, self-righteous, angry. He is in love with Johnny, a young, married, working-class man with a sweetly easygoing nature. When Johnny is sent to prison for committing a petty theft, Frank gets caught up in a struggle with Johnnys wife and parents for access to him. Their struggle finds a strange focus in Johnnys doga beautiful but neglected German shepherd named Evie. And it is she, in the end, who becomes the improbable and undeniable guardian of Franks inner world.

Populated with dull and hateful characters, I can‘t recommend this story of a middle class man who falls for his incarcerated lover‘s German Shepherd. The snobbery of the main character and the abuse and neglect of the blameless dog are all hard to take. This is not funny nor is it a love story as far as I‘m concerned. I started a massive reorganization of my trade paperback books and this one‘s strange size made it fit uncomfortably on the shelf so I decided to read it instead of putting it back. Gatsby thinks she‘s better looking than the dog on the cover. 😉

Clwojick I agree with Gatsby! ♥️ 3y

Last book club meeting in 2020 for #nyrbclassicsreadingsociety ❣️COVID-19 didn‘t stop us; we moved the meetings to Zoom, and we have more regulars since

Cinfhen Great!!!! 3y
charl08 Yay! I've loved the way so many book events have gone online - and joined an online translated fiction book group too, which I don't think I'd have been able to get to in person. 3y
arubabookwoman Did the group like this one? I really enjoyed it. 3y
sisilia @arubabookwoman Avg 3.6⭐️ Two of us loved it ( including myself), the rest didn‘t like the Frank & Johnny part 3y

4⭐️ I always love books about dogs, especially those that I don‘t end up crying because the dog died. Don‘t worry, no dogs died in this novel. Ackerley once again told a cozy and funny story about dog-human relationship; and of course, about how the dog dominates one‘s life 😆

Cathythoughts The dog definitely dominates 😂... 3y
sisilia @Cathythoughts Always 🤪 The same with his other book 3y
Smarkies I read his other book - My Dog Tulip. Am guessing he based this novel perhaps on his relationship as detailed in that book? 😁 3y
