My Dog Tulip
My Dog Tulip | J.R. Ackerley
9 posts | 11 read | 7 to read
The distinguished British man of letters J. R. Ackerley hardly thought of himself as a dog lover when, well into middle age, he came into possession of a German shepherd. To his surprise, she turned out to be the love of his life, the ideal friend he had been searching for in vain for years. My Dog Tulip is a bittersweet retrospective account of their sixteen-year companionship, as well as a profound and subtle meditation on the strangeness that lies at the heart of all relationships. In vivid and sometimes startling detail, Ackerley tells of Tulips often erratic behavior and very canine tastes, and of his own fumbling but determined efforts to ensure for her an existence of perfect happiness. Paul and Sandra Fierlingers animated feature film of My Dog Tulip, starring Christopher Plummer, Lynn Redgrave, and Isabella Rossellini, was released in 2010.

We got a new rescue pup! This is Tulip, we've had her for a week now and she is just the sweetest girl🌷💕

It's definitely been an adjustment going from one dog to two but they're getting along so well I can't complain!

I wasn't quite sure about reading this biography; first of all, I'm not a big fan of biographies. I'd also read reviews commenting on the author's use of graphic detail when it comes to describing his dog's bathroom habits and sexual exploits. Some of the sections, though, made me laugh. And it's always nice to read about an unconventional dog; makes me think of my eccentric dog. 🌟 🌟 🌟

All the books about dogs or cats that I‘ve read so far made me cry at the end, but this book is an exception. Tulip and the author had an excellent bonding; I‘d say that she was the master in the relationship 😆

Dog lovers will really appreciate this book, they‘d see themselves in direct relationship with Tulip 😘

We had been followed for some time by a small dog, one of those smooth, tight-skinned, busy and bouncing little creatures who, if dogs wore hats, would certainly have worn a bowler.

batsy This is the best description. 5y

A lovely biography about his dog Tulip. He was extremely interested in all things relating to her especially her sexual needs which are well documented. 😂😂
