The Sushi Economy
The Sushi Economy: Globalization and the Making of a Modern Delicacy | Sasha Issenberg
6 posts | 2 read | 4 to read
The highly acclaimed exploration of sushis surprising history, global business, and international allure One generation ago, sushis narrow reach ensured that sports fishermen who caught tuna in most of parts of the world sold the meat for pennies as cat food. Today, the fatty cuts of tuna known as toro are among the planets most coveted luxury foods, worth hundreds of dollars a pound and capable of losing value more quickly than any other product on earth. So how did one of the worlds most popular foods go from being practically unknown in the United States to being served in towns all across America, and in such a short span of time? A riveting combination of culinary biography, behind-the- scenes restaurant detail, and a unique exploration of globalizations dynamics, the book traces sushis journey from Japanese street snack to global delicacy. After traversing the pages of The Sushi Economy, youll never see the food on your plateor the world around youquite the same way again.

My hubby cut his hand- so I have been contentedly reading in the waiting room of the urgent care.
I never leave the house without a book - I will however rethink the subject matter in the future. After a couple hours reading about sushi now I‘m hungry.

Although it's the weekend I haven't done much reading. The husband has to work today (from home but still) and so it was mostly me and the kids today. But hey at least we had homemade sushi! I did the prep for it while listening to Roxane Gay's Hunger - the kids were watching Pokémon.

ReadingSusan That looks amazing!! Now I am craving sushi 🤣 6y
GypsyKat I‘m always impressed with people who can make homemade sushi! 👍🍣 And it looks delicious too! 6y

Bookwitchery Sushi is my comfort food! My first ever sushi experience was in college. One of my classes had a potluck dinner at the end of the semester, and two students from Japan made sushi just for me because I'd never had it before. I'm a sushi fiend now 6y

Haven't done much reading today but after this delicious sushi lunch I'm ready to hit the library to pick up books for the kids and hopefully head home for some reading. How's your Sunday/Monday going? 🍣

Adventures-of-a-French-Reader Having received a huge amount of work for Tuesday, I spent my Sunday morning, and a part of my afternoon translating... Now it's time to take care of myself = reading while drinking tea ;) 7y
CocoReads 6+ inches of snow so far this weekend. Looks like more on the way tonight. Went to church this morning but since then I've been snug as a bug at home. Don't plan on leaving again til Tuesday when I have to work. Except I may need to take twin 1 to work and class tomorrow. I have 4 wheel drive and no plow on our road today means her little car may not make it out. 7y
BookBabe Yum! So jealous! 😍😋 7y
