Mehso-so

Clever title. Otherwise just not for me. Probably a great book, but I don‘t think LeGuin is for me. I remember reading her in college but I don‘t remember enjoying it. So-so because it really is a clever title/concept. Looking forward to next month‘s #authoramonth

This has convinced me of what many have told me before - that Le Guin was a genius

In Changing Planes, Le Guin imagines travelers can use airports to visit different planes of existence, where different human-like beings live. These stories are like an anthropological study of the various planes, some as straight description and others via the experience of a traveler from Earth. I found this completely unique.

Imagine that an anthropologist who was tired of people's ethnocentric shit and lack of scientific understanding (plus a vivid imagination) sarcastically wrote Gulliver's Travels, and you have this book. I don't always enjoy short stories, but these were fun. #anthropology #travel #scifi #FunThingsToDoAtAnAirport

From my library's Overdrive page. Bad cover or the worst cover? 🤐

merelybookish I feel like Le Guin would NOT approve! 6y
Bertha_Mason Yyyyep. Nothing says "feminist speculative fiction" like a gratuitous naked woman. ? 6y
batsy Women of the corn? One almost hopes this awful cover leads to horror. 6y
Bertha_Mason I certainly hope it does. 6y
Kenyazero (I know it's been 2 years, and this is long out of mind by now) It's not an amazing cover, but it's not the worst cover either. It's a fun reference to the first story in the book, which saves it a bit. It is a bit ugly overall, though 🤔 I've seen plenty of feminist work that celebrates the female body by letting her be naked and unsexualized, like we see here. 4y

An enjoyable reread, and though there's whimsy in the premise, there's Le Guin's usual careful thought throughout.

I don‘t have anything on my shelves for #bigjetplane but after a quick Goodreads search, I may need to add this to my #TBR.

Mehso-so

I'm giving this a so-so because I know I'm biased against short stories (they're the wooorst, argh). There was even short stories WITHIN one of the short stories. 😠 That being said, the idea of travelling to different planes of existence while being stuck in an airport is fun, so... cool?

Gym, shower, and then read for 20 minutes or so while getting kitty cuddles is a great way to start the morning. ☀️📚🐈
