pickLook, I know I joked about “cheating” on #readingafrica2022 by reading as many children‘s books as I could, but they have been some of the best books! This one has gorgeous art, a simple, but powerful story, and an important message. I actually want to buy a copy for my own bookshelves and I have no children in my life! #burkinafaso
It has been AGES since I set foot in my library branch. It closed for renovations shortly before the pandemic lockdown started. Today, I successfully navigated a redirected parking lot, found the holds shelf (and my three books for #ReadingAfrica2022), and figured out the new, fancy self-checkout!

In Gie Gie‘s small African village she doesn‘t have running water, so she walks with her mother to a far well. The water isn‘t clear, carrying a pot on her head isn‘t easy, and the walk is a far distance. Gie Gie hopes that one day she will be able to have access to clean water. #ucflae3414su20
Written by Susan Verde. Theme: Equal rights. This Nonfiction, Picture book is great for classroom discussion and read-aloud. It Is based on Georgia Badiel's childhood story. It teaches children how precious water is and that families in another part of the world struggle to have it. This book was created as a means of raising awareness that we all have the fundamental right to clean water and an education.
The wonderful, touching story of a girl and her mother traveling far just to get water. Something we take for granted that other people have to spend whole days to get. A great book showing a different culture and way of life.

It is also a touching book with words and sentence structure for younger children. The story tells of the process it takes for them to get just water that they must carry long distances and still boil. A long journey each day to get a necessity for life. Touching and shows the hardships people face that we don't.
