Listen, Slowly | Thanhha Lai
Pickpick

This book falls under the category of contemporary realistic fiction, and was published in the year of 2015. A brief summary would be that a Vietnamese American girl starts her journey of becoming more involved with family. The book hold many lessons and meanings within it.
Not only did I like the book for the overall message, but because it hold true and meaningful lessons that one can relate to no matter culture or upbringing (important read).

em_lemo I think that this book is important because although it highlights the thoughts of one who would be considered to be multicultural, others are able to see what that may mean or feel like to people. I liked the perspective of a girl, Mia, and her family, including her grandmother.
One line that stuck out to me within the book was,
“Life is easy and hard, beautiful and ugly.“
I liked this because it shows that lives within books are not perfect.

Night of the Howling Dogs | Graham Salisbury
Pickpick

This book falls under the category of contemporary realistic fiction and was published in the year of 2007. The book goes through a time of camping with a boy Dylan and his scout troop. The story proceeds with the camping taking place in Hawaii at a place called Halape. The weekend is great aside from there being a boy that most do not get along with.
During their time, an earthquake hits, rocks fall, and the boys have to put aside differences.

em_lemo The book is well thought out and is constantly filled with suspense. Throughout the book one is introduced to new trials that they must overcome together in order to complete/continue their rescue mission. One of my favorite sayings throughout this book is,
“I was used to lifting because we were working out with a weight set in my garage, trying to bulk up for high school football.“
This shows some of the things that he will need to use at camp.

This book is historical fiction that was published in 2006. The book is set in Germany and covers the start and growing relationship of two little boys. One of the little boys is in a concentration camp, while the other is blocked from the boy by a fence because he is not in the camp. This little boys father is a soldier for Nazi, Germany.
The book is compelling through the word usage and the description of what the little boys talked about.

em_lemo The little boy outside of the camp does not understand why they cannot play together and they take it upon themselves to make sure they get to play. One of the lines that stuck out to me throughout the book was,
“Those people... well, they're not people at all, Bruno.“
This comes from the father expressing to his son what his thought on the people behind the fence mean to him and the other Nazi soldiers.

Sounder | William H. Armstrong
Pickpick

This book is a Historical Fiction book that was published in 1969. The book was great and interesting throughout. The length of the book is great for those who are starting to read chapter books, and allows for one to reflect on the history within the book.
The book explains the struggles of black family. One of the struggles that the reader is introduced to in the beginning is that the father in the family is imprisoned because he stole a ham.

em_lemo Something one will learn while reading the book is that the father and his dog, Sounder, go hunting every night to find food for the family. After the father gets arrested, the little boy cannot find the dog but finds one of the dogs ears detached. Finally the dog comes home and the story goes on.
One of my favorite lines throughout this book is,
“One day might be different from another, but there ain't much difference when they're put together.“

Frida | Jonah Winter
Pickpick

This book is a biography of the renowned artist Frida Kahlo. It was published in 2004. The book shows and explain the life of Frida with the accompaniment of beautiful illustrations. The book is able to show the life of Frida into a way in which younger readers are able to understand and learn from.
Something that would be hard not to notice throughout this book has to be the illustrations. Through the illustrations, one learns where she is from.

em_lemo I loved this book, and a lot of the things it had to say. One of the sayings that really stuck out to me was,
“Fridas father is an artist and a photographer.
He teachers her how to use a paintbrush.“
This stuck out to me because of how the author was able to incorporate the guidance and help of parents, but also teaches and shows the reader how much he or she is learning from their parents/guardians.

I think that it should go without saying that this book is great. This book is a biography that was written in 2014 that highlights the hardships and struggles that a little girl of color, and her family, has to face in their day-to-day lives.
This book opens the readers eyes to the history of what happened when it came to people of color being free; they were not. It also allows for one to see the view of this life firsthand through her eyes.

em_lemo One of my favorite quotes throughout this book is,
“I am born in Ohio but
the stories of South Carolina already run
like rivers
through my veins.“
I liked this because it shows that although she may have not directly experiences life in South Carolina yet, that she is aware and knowing of what and how people of color are treated.

This book was great. It tells the story of how Abigail Adams witnessed the gathering of the revolution, and the book was published in the year of 1995. Something that I found interesting with this book was the amount of detail that was given in the view of Abigail Adams.
The story is told very uniquely through the letters written to her friends and family, but also through first encounters of the battle taking place on a hill near her home.

em_lemo Because this book used a lot of letters that were written by Abigail Adams, I started to look up more of the letters that may have not been in the book. One of these letters, was one from her to her husband.
“I most sincerely wish that some more liberal plan might be laid and executed for the benefit of the rising generation...“
This stuck out to me because she seems to be a woman that may have been ahead of her time, in some ways.

This book was inspiring and amazing. It was published in 2012, and is a biography/true story of the life of Helen Keller. Although one may know some general facts about Helen Keller upon hearing her name, this book elaborates on this amazing woman's life including the struggles and successes of her life.
This book had beautiful and almost true to life illustrations. By this meaning that many of them looked as though they were photographs.

em_lemo Something that stuck out to me in this book was,
“She loved the mockingbird song and the sweet smell of climbing roses.“
I liked this because this is describing the life of Helen when she was still in her infancy years. I loved how descriptive the book was throughout, and it made me think that maybe the purpose of being so detailed throughout the book would be to allow those who may not be able to see to imagine and experience these ideas.

This book was great. This is a biography that was published in 2014. This book is aimed more towards younger crowds due to the many illustrations and the explanations throughout the book, but no one is too young or two old to be intrigued/drawn in by this book.
The book is about a little boy who's name is Carl. He loves the sky and concepts of space, stars, and comparing how big the sun is to our small planets. He also shows interest in planets.

em_lemo My favorite line throughout this book has to be the beginning. In the beginning, one is greeted with the sun and the planets that are around and closest to it, and then continues to narrow the places to Brooklyn, NY; which is were Carl lives.
“Carl was curious about everything.“
This follows the introduction, but sets up the readers for a hint about what he may be curious about.

This book was great. It is a biography of E.B. White, who wrote one of the most beloved stories of Charlottes Web, and was written in 2016. The book tells of the writing that was done by E.B. White and how some of his works got turned into movies.
Something that I really appreciated while reading this book were the illustrations. These illustrations included some pictures that were drawn and some that were real photographs of E.B. White.

em_lemo One of my favorite pages throughout the book includes what was given to En for his eleventh birthday.
“Now the best part of the summer was not just being out of school by waking early, before the rest of the family, and sneaking out onto the lake in his own canoe.“
I liked this because the book was very organized and well thought out when it came to the placement of his life as a young child.

This book was great. It was published in 2016. Although published in 2016, the book is based on a night in 1981. It tells the story of a fishing boat that is filled with about 60 refugees. The story is being retold by one of the little boys that was on the boat with his mother, Tuan Ho. He was six at the time.
Not only is the story compelling and interesting, but the illustrations add extra depth and character to the story showing experiences.

em_lemo I did not have a quote that stuck out to me while reading this book because, as said before, the book is extremely compelling and intense. I think I would have to write the whole book if I had something that really stuck out to me. I will say that when Tuan is explaining what is going wrong on the boat such as the low amount of drinking water, I was on the edge of my sea. 4y

This book was published in 2011, it is also a biography. This book shows the amazing life of Amelia Earhart, but also struggles that she had to face through her life as well. The story tells why she cut her hair, and explains some of the records she broke.
I enjoyed this book, and the ways the book was written and explained. The different types of terminology throughout the book are great ways for readers to learn more about flying.

em_lemo My favorite line throughout the book is,
“He wanted the flyer to inspire the female student to take up careers in such a male dominated field as agriculture and engineering.“
I liked this because it showed that people, men, were ready for some change within the world when it came to the jobs that females could take part in. It is amazing to think about how these people trusted her and wanted her although she did not have teaching experience.

This book was great. This is a biography that tells the story of how Eugenie Clark became “the oceans most fearless scientist. It was published in 2017.
Throughout the book, one is shown the many different types of discoveries and experiences that Eugenie had, but some of the main focus is on sharks. I liked that this book can take something that can be scary to people, like the ocean, and show the amazing things about it such as the animals.

em_lemo My favorite quote throughout this book is,
“Eugenie pretended she was walking on the bottom of the sea. What would it be like to swim with her sharks? To breath under water with gills of her own. More than anything, she wanted to find out.“
I liked this quote because it shows the readers that Eugenie had a passion for this type of work from a young age, but also that she put her mind to it and would succeed.

This book was published in 2002 and is a biography. The book is about a little girl who goes through her life of singing, but also mentions and emphasizes the hardships that she goes through in her life. One of them being her father passing away.
Aside from this, the book has beautiful illustrations and story telling. The songs that were sung by Marian are in the book and italicized so one is able to really read and interpret the songs sung.

em_lemo A saying that I really enjoyed in this book was one that went like this:
“Marian knew about prejudice. She had seen the trolley drive past her family as they stood at the corner.“
I liked this line because it showed the hardships and the time in which this woman, and her family was growing. I think that having these details gives the reader more insight.

Aside from this, the book is set up in a comic type of way. There are constant illustrations on every page outlining what the words. I like this type of set up, and enjoyed this book.

em_lemo A quote that I enjoyed within this book is,

Other than explaining the life of Josephine Baker with words, the book has very unique illustrations all throughout. The illustrations are able to tell the story of the Josephine without there being words on the page.

em_lemo My favorite quote throughout this book is,

This book was published in 2011 and shows the life of a man named George E. Ohr. This book is a biography and describes the life of the man and how he got stared in the potting industry.
Aside from this, the layout of the book is great. There are constant photographs throughout the book showing life of George. These photographs included pictures of his home, pottery he did, as well as where he grew up. Overall, this was/is a great biography.

em_lemo My favorite quote throughout this book is,
“The potter stands at his wheel, all about overhead, on the walls, under foot, are samples of his work. The colors of the clay are delicate and lovely, many of the pieces are exquisitely graceful.“

Aside from all of the facts given throughout the book, one is able to stay engaged and intrigued with the constant illustrations of the sharks, their bodies, their teeth, and their fins.

em_lemo Something that I found to be very interesting about sharks was that “White sharks are visual predators- they target their elephant seal prey primarily by sight.“

This is a nonfiction book that was published in the year of 2005. This book gives great background on an animal that people do not usually see in their backyard, at least where I'm from we don't. This book gives an extensive amount of information on Chameleons.

em_lemo Other than this, most of the facts stated within the book I had no clue about. I also like that this book gave a new type of narrative and outlook on the creatures of Chameleons. She welcomes him with pale colors.“ 4y

This is a nonfiction book that was published in the year of 2013. It is a very informative book about the activity and hobby of bird-watching. Not only is there a jam packed amount of information about birdwatching within the book, but there is also a large amount of illustrations involved.
These illustrations keep the reader involved, as well as the way in which the book is written. It is kind of set up in a comic strip way, but not quite.

em_lemo One of my favorite facts, or pieces of information within this book is on the tenth and eleventh page of the book. The page is a rainbow of birds, and one of the fun facts is one of the birds describing the color of their feathers or the way they may look.

Aside from this, I think that it is a very informative read. It keeps the reader engaged with all the facts and pictures that are written and shown on each page. The pictures are real photographs taken which makes it even better.

em_lemo One fact that I found very interesting in this book was,

Aside from this, I think that the writing of the book is perfect for those that may be gradually working towards more mature writing styles. The morals that are taught throughout this book are subtle but necessary.

em_lemo Published in 1993, the giver has many lines and sayings throughout that I find important and meaningful. One of my absolute favorites is,

This book is one of my absolute favorite books of all time. There are few illustrations, but of the ones that there are explain so much about the story and how grim the setting is. It is an easy read, but does not have a casual or predictable storyline.
Aside from these points, the wording of the book is great. The imagination throughout and how the plot thickens is perfect for children who are looking to get into a different type of story.

em_lemo Published in 2002, Neil Gaiman is known for making stories that one may refer to as spooky or grim. I would suggest any of his books. Another favorite is The Graveyard Book. Although I love that book as well, one of my favorite quotes throughout Coraline is,
“Oh my twitchy witchy girl I think you are so nice,

Aside from this, the poems told stories rather than feelings most of the time. The illustrations were a great aid to see what was going on within the story. Published in 2011.

I really liked the set up of this book. This was able to show me, and I imagine many other readers, that not all poems are different or have a completely different meaning with every new page.

em_lemo This book was published in 2010. The idea that these poems were telling the consistent story throughout the book seemed to be a fairly new type of style of poetry. Pickpick

I have never heard of this story. I enjoyed the story very much upon reading about it(pub.1988). I liked the story a lot. It was/is very different from most stories that i have read, but in the best way possible. I liked that the boy was actually just taking a nap.
Aside from the story itself, I really liked the illustrations. It allows for there to be a constant throughout the book and no overstimulation.
“Cheer up Mother. I have a plan.“

I liked this book. I used to have this read to me when I was little and it was, still is, one of my favorite books for children. I think that it brings the perfect level of fantasy and reality throughout.
Aside from the story, the illustrations were good and some realistic. Illustrations are very important to me, and I imagine most other people as well. I loved looking at the pictures and could not wait to see what was next.

Give Up, Gecko!: A Folktale from Uganda | Margaret Read MacDonald
Pickpick

I think that it is a great tale to be told to children, or anyone at any age(pub.2013). I liked the whole storyline of the gecko, being one of the smallest animals, being one of the bravest to get the water. I think that it teaches a value-able lesson to be brave.
Aside from that, I enjoyed the illustrations. I would say that they are very simple, but that there are plenty of colors and animals.
“Soon the middle-sized animals all...gave up.“

Easy to say I love this book. I love having or reading this book gives people the ability to show some type of diversity to the children. I love that objects that we look at daily have personality. There are stories like this in every culture(pub.1968).
Aside from the story itself, I love the illustrations. I like that the Moon, Sun, Water, etc., all have very detailed illustrations.
“...the sun and the moon were forced to go up into the sky.“

I really liked this book(pub.1971). At first, I was not sure if I wanted to continue reading because of the not so happy beginning. After the beginning, I enjoyed and saw were the book was going. I think it is a great read.
Aside from the story itself, I enjoyed the type of illustrations throughout the book. I liked how intricate they were, but also the cohesion of the colors.

I think that this book was great (pub.2017). I would say that it is a book that most people do not know, but should know. It brings real life issues into a light that is understandable and necessary for children to see.
The illustrations were beautiful. I liked all of the different types of point of views whether that be face on or above the characters.

I enjoyed this book very much(pub.2015). I like the way the story was written and the illustrations throughout. I think this fit into the family story category.
I really enjoyed how the book started off with a letter from the child's grandpa. It was a great way to get things started, but I also think that this book is an awesome way to get kids excited and curious about the summer or school breaks.
“So far, it's been a delicious summer.“

This book is a Caldecott Award Winner (published 2005). I enjoyed this book because for me it brought back a sense of nostalgia, but for children this can just bring happiness whether the student think about their times with family, friends, or guardians.
I think the illustrations are very unique, and intricate. I had never seen illustrations like this before, but I hope to see more.

This book is a Caldecott Award winner (published 2014). The book contained a message that was well thought out. I enjoyed the illustrations and the way in which the book was written very much.
Something that I really appreciated throughout the book, aside from the message and writing style, were the illustrations. I loved the color usage and the simplicity, but also complexity of some pictures.

Great book for learning how to count (1984). The illustrations are cute and also show the need of having someone help teach these skills to the child in order for there to be success.
I really enjoyed the counting in this book. I enjoyed the relation of household objects and some of your own body parts i.e. toes.
“6 pale seashells hanging down.“
I enjoyed this quote because of the illustrations and the relation to the beach.
