Coretta Scott King Book Award, Illustrator, Honor Robert F. Sibert Informational Book Award, Honor Boston GlobeHorn Book Award, Nonfiction Honor In exuberant verse and stirring pictures, Patricia Hruby Powell and Christian Robinson create an extraordinary portrait for young people of the passionate performer and civil rights advocate Josephine Baker, the woman who worked her way from the slums of St. Louis to the grandest stages in the world. Meticulously researched by both author and artist, Josephine's powerful story of struggle and triumph is an inspiration and a spectacle, just like the legend herself.

Josephine: The Dazzling Life of Josephine Baker: Josephine Baker | Patricia Hruby Powell, Christian (illustrator) Robinson

This biography is a fast-moving narrative as it shares the overview of Josephine Baker's life. The biography highlights the extraordinary life of Josephine Baker and how she overcame many challenges. One main topic the book focuses on is segregation and how Josephine believed everybody, no matter their race, could live together in harmony. This was important to include in this biography as Josephine was very motivated to speak out against it.

This biography is a very fast paced narrative. It encompasses the major milestones and events of Josephine Baker's life. In addition to the many challenges, she faced and overcame to become the successful individual she is known for. One of the main focuses of this story is on segregation. Specifically, how Josephine believed everyone, no matter their race, could live together in harmony. I found this to be a nice addition to the story.

I really enjoyed this picture book in verse (which I'll add book info for soon). It covers the life of Josephine Baker as she broke into showbiz, went to France to escape segregated performance spaces, became super famous, and started the Rainbow Tribe. (Thanks to this book, I also noticed a nod to Kosephine during a recent rewatch of the animated Anastasia movie!). #NonFiction #PictureBook

Clare-Dragonfly What is the title? My son might like this! 3y
Kenyazero @Clare-Dragonfly I've just updated it with the book information. It looks like this is on sale on Kindle right now, and might be part of the Kindle's subscription service if you have that (I just noticed because I used Amazon to collect some of the book data). 3y

Review: Josephine by Patricia Powell, 2014, is a biography about performer and civil rights advocate Josephine Baker. It was well researched by the author and illustrator
Blurb: This is a great example of the genre because it tells the true story of a real person, and it uses real quotes that came from the main character that flow and fit into the storyline.

This book would be great for kids in early childhood classrooms. I think they would find it enjoyable and i also believe the message is strong and empowering! The biography shows a large span of Josephine's life and gives light into everything that happened!

I would consider using this book in my classroom however it was pretty long so I'm not sure if the kids would be willing to pay and keep their attention on the book but it may spark interest in some of the kids.

Josephine: The Dazzling Life of Josephine Baker written by Patricia Hruby Powell. About the timeline of the course of Josephine's personal life and career as a dancer. Certain words have different fonts which seem to emphasize or exaggerate the meaning, such as POP! in all caps.

“The chorus of frenzied dancers joined her.“

This book would be great for 2nd and 3rd graders. It's a longer book so it would be better for older elementary kids to read. The pages are longer so it would be easier for 2nd and 3rd graders to understand what is going on.

This is a nonfiction book. The text in this book is definitely appropriate for an intended audience because the words are presented clearly and a good size for students to read. The language is also very vivid and interesting because it's on different colors of papers and the words are placed in odd spots.

This book was published in 2014. This book is also a biography about the dancer Josephine Baker. This book covers the whole life of the dancer, and elaborates about her life before becoming the dancer.
Other than explaining the life of Josephine Baker with words, the book has very unique illustrations all throughout. The illustrations are able to tell the story of the Josephine without there being words on the page.

em_lemo My favorite quote throughout this book is,
“Cross your heart...
Swear you won't tell Mama...
I'm leaving with the show...“
This was said by Josephine and I think it gives a great background or precursor to her journey.

This book is a B and would read as a RA. It is a wonderful story about how a child who grew in poverty grew to become someone who is looked upon as a role model and has children which is named the rainbow tribe. #ucflae3414su19

Stephanie5 UDL : 4.2 ESOL :28 these two tools would help understand the biography and give some more in depth knowledge in order to find out more from Josephine 5y
DezireeLara This is an awesome book for biographies and black history month! Our students must know about different cultures and hear diverse backgrounds that resemble our very own students. 5y
DrSpalding Several of your peers decided to read this book as well. It‘s a favorite biography of mine. You have a couple excellent biographies that you could use during a historical figures unit. Now it‘s on you to use them! EL 28 is spot on! 5y

Josephine: The dazzling life of Josephine Baker is a beautiful B about entertainer & Harlem Renaissance activist Josephine baker. It is a CSK award winner as well as a Robert Sibert award winner. I think this book would be a great IR for students to study the life of Josephine Baker. #UCFLAE3414SU19

BeverlyMel UDL 1.1: offer ways of customizing the display of information. Although i‘ve seen read aloud videos before, i‘ve never quite seen one like this. It‘s more of a synopsis rather than an actual read of the story. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J4kFwHNja8A&feature=youtu.be ESOL strategy 17 can be incorporated by the use of a visual aid as well as strategy 28 (edited) 5y
DrSpalding I love, love, love the video! Robinson‘s illustrations are amazing and to see them in this format truly brings the book to life. You are right that 1.1 works well as does EL 17. 5y

Josephine: The Dazzling Life of Josephine Baker (B) Written by Patricia Hruby Powell and illustrated by Christina Robinson. (Corette Scott King and Caldecott Awards) I LOVED this book! It summarizes the life of Josephine Baker, a brave, strong, heroic dancer! I feel like this story would make a great ST because it just makes you feel like dancing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q6cSTBfIGHk

alexialovesmith I would play this in the background as I read to the students, then after the story is over I would let them dance around as if they were Josephine! It‘s only fitting! This meets UDL4.2, using technology! Having the children dance would meet ELS15 because it reinforces an important part of the story, Josephine is a dancer! It‘s safe to say I‘ve found my new found my favorite illustrator through this assignment, Christian Robinson! #ucflae3414su19

Kendylleonard I love the idea of this book because it‘s not your “typical” biography. Students will love having the freedom of getting up and being able to dance around the room! This is a great idea! 5y
DrSpalding This is a beautiful book and reading it to funky jazz music is an excellent idea that would be engaging and motivating. You are correct it meets universal design and English learner strategies when you add music! One of your peers found a YouTube video that is the synopsis of the book using Robinson‘s illustrations… Check it out. 5y

Josephine (Robert Sibert award + Coretta Scott King award) by: Patricia H Powell and Illustrated by: Christian Robinson is a NF biography that will have you hanging on every word! The book tells the tale of Josephine Bakers uneasy rise to flapper dance stardom. Reading it was an enriching experience. It‘s a great book for vocabulary instruction and cross concepts with social studies. I would do a RA with this book for sure.

Mary_Dehner Above is a teacher resource link, this book is great for a unit lesson where each day is centered around a read aloud with vocabulary instruction. The subject cross concepts with social studies and civil rights. The resource pairs well with UDL strategy 2.1 and ESOL strategy 25 with vocab. #ucflae3414su19 (edited) 5y
DrSpalding This is one of my favorite books. In the inside cover, there was a QR code to a very cool video of Josephine dancing! Looking forward to the replacement. Don‘t forget!😀❤️📚 5y

Oh, wow! What an inspiring read told in verses and striking visuals! Her dreams took her to places she thought impossible. From rags to riches - from lowlife no-life to Paris high-life, Josephine Baker broke down walls and barriers, and proved that impossible is 'I m possible'!
