No, David! | David Shannon

Pickpick

I consider this a classic, a must-read! David is a little boy who doesn't listen, so he always makes a mess and ends up hearing “no, David!“ This RF, Caldecott Honor book will have students laughing along as you do a RT to them. One UDL & EL strategy is Promote understanding across languages (2.4) & 17. Provide contextual support through audiovisuals, models, demonstrations, realia, body language and facial expressions. #UCFLAE3414SP20

SequoiaC123 Here are some extension activities: http://search.readwritethink.org/?q=%22no,%20david!%22. I would definitely use this book to teach talking about SEL and review socially acceptable behavior! 4y
Kayla_C Hey Sequoia, I want to read this book, I have been wanting to read this book. I would love to see all the different activities that educators come up with for this story. 4y
McKaylaH I also did a post about this book, it‘s honestly a favorite! I like the idea of a RT, never have thought of doing that. I like your choice of UDL and EL strategy, and the resource you have provided. I will definitely be using that for my future classroom. Keep up the good work! 4y
DrSpalding This is a must read and I like the idea of using this to spur conversation about behavior. This would make an excellent author study as well. 4y

Beezus and Ramona | Beverly Cleary

This RF novel focuses on 9-year-old Ramona as she has trouble with getting along with younger sister, Beezus. She finds her very annoying. This would be a fun book for SR and would keep students engaged. One UDL & EL strategy is activate or supply background knowledge (3.1) & 34. De-emphasize speed and emphasize accuracy of work. **Trigger Warning**
This Pulitzer Prize award-winning HF novel mainly focuses on the trial of a black man accused, of r*ping a white woman. However, there are other elements in this novel like comedy & coming of age. I would use this as a LC. 1 UDL & EL strategy is vary the methods for response and navigation (4.1) and 46. Use discovery learning activities (hands-on-activities).
#UCFLAE3414SP20

Keishla.O I have always heard about this book but never actually read it. You‘ve convinced me now to get it! Great job! 4y
ValeriaCastaneda23 Everyone talked crap about this work while reading it in middle school but I‘ve always loved it! I honestly forgot about how much I loved it until your post so thank you! 4y
DrSpalding Your resource is the highest quality! As Valeria noted, this is not a book you would read in elementary school but is much more appropriate for high school students. 4y

This SF, Prometheus Hall of Fame award-winning novel is set in a grimy, dystopian London where “Big Brother is watching you.“ Winston embraces his individuality, which means trouble. I would use this book as a RA. One UDL & EL strategy is vary the methods for response and navigation (4.1) & 23. structure advance organizers consisting for new terminology that

DrSpalding Again, not appropriate for elementary students but certainly a book that has value! Be sure to elaborate on how your resource aligns with universal design and English learner strategies to meet the needs of all students. 4y

Lord of the Flies | Golding William

This F, Nobel Prize award-winning novel, is one of the wildest I've ever read! It's about a group of British schoolboys who get stranded on a deserted island and try to govern themselves. It truly is a wild ride. Given the nature of this book, I would use it as a RA. One UDL & EL strategy is Guide information processing and visualization (3.3) and 16. Integrate speaking, listening, reading and writing activities. #UCFLAE3414SP20

SequoiaC123 Here are extension activities: http://search.readwritethink.org/?q=%22lord%20of%20the%20flies%22. This is the kind of book where I would really want to hear students' opinions regarding the plot. So, I would make it where we read in class and then have discussions about the novel so that they can share their perspectives. 4y
DrSpalding You hit the jackpot with this resource! Again not one for elementary age students however if you end up teaching in high school, possibly using your reading endorsement, these books and resources will come in handy. 4y

This F picture book will have students intrigued the entire time! Lola is a very picky eater, so Charlie must convince her to use her imagination to eat foods she doesn't like. This book is full of great illustrations so I would use it as a RA. One UDL & EL strategy is Guide appropriate goal-setting (6.1) & 18. Use commands and directions that involve overt student actions as in Total Physical Response (TPR). #UCFLAE3414SP20

Ryan_R I remember this show from when I was a kid! Loved the simplistic animation style. 4y
carolinem Lol this looks so cute!! The extension activity looks awesome 4y
DrSpalding What kind of fiction? I love the extension idea of using this book in a science lesson about nutrition. Charlie and Lola are fun characters that as Ryan stated, were a part of a cartoon that students might be familiar with. 4y

Old Elm Speaks: Tree Poems | Kristine O'Connell George
post image

This P picturebook personifies a tree and shares the importance of itself. This is a great book for kids to learn the significance of trees and the many ways living things use them. I would use this book for GR. One UDL & EL strategy is Clarify syntax and structure (2.2) & 14. Simplify your speech by making it slower and redundant. Here are some extension activities: http://www.kristinegeorge.com/teachers_guide_old_elm_speaks.html #UCFLAE3414SP20

DrSpalding When you look at the poetry page on the Google site, choral reading, echo reading, independent poetry readings are all recommended. You could use this for guided reading but that is probably not the best strategy. This is a nice anthology. As soon as I saw the topic was trees I made a text to text connection with Wishtree. 🌲 4y

This SF, Newberry award-winning novel is exceptional! It's set in a utopian society in which Jonas, a 12-year-old boy, is selected to be the Reciever of Memory. He gains history, new emotions, and even pain (which their society eliminated). This a great SR novel. A UDL & EL strategy is Increase mastery-oriented feedback (8.4) & 32. Use student pairs for team learning, especially for reports, experiments and projects. #UCFLAE3414SP20

SequoiaC123 I would have students read in pairs or small groups, have them discuss what they read, write their thoughts down, and then share with the class. This is a could way to get the students comfortable with talking especially if they are able to “practice“ first.

This NF picturebook shares the stories of 13 women who “persisted,“ from Helen Keller to Ruby Bridges. These women changed the narrative of what a woman can do and be, no matter the starting place. Viva Frida | Yuyi Morales
post image

This Pura Belpre award-winning B of Mexican artist, Frida Kahlo would be great for RA. Yuyi Morales tells the story of Frida while leaving out details that may be deemed inappropriate. This picture book would be great for primary students! One UDL & El strategy is: optimize relevance, value, and authenticity (7.2) & 28. Provide biographies of significant men and women from different countries. #UCFLAE3414SP20

VictoriaG This is so cool!! Honestly the only place I knew her from was the movie Coco. It would be interesting to learn more about her!! 4y
Ryan_R I‘ve never even heard of this. Victoria said she was mentioned in Coco, but I don‘t remember that! I‘m sure kids would love it though if there‘s any sort of Disney connection! 4y
DrSpalding This is a beautiful award winning picture book biography. Your extension activity resource is fantastic. Elaborate on how you would use this in your future classroom. Victoria‘s comment about the movie Coco is interesting and honestly is what many children may think as well. Introduce historically significant individuals during social studies instruction! 4y

If I were to use The Watsons Go To Birmingham-1963 and this novel in the classroom I would definitely have the students create a Venn diagram to compare the two novels. This F picture book tells the story of Sulwe, a young girl with skin as dark as midnight, who has a burning desire for lighter skin. She goes on a journey and finds that beauty comes from within!
