Doctor De Soto
Doctor De Soto | William Steig
8 posts | 16 read
"Doctor De Soto, the dentist, did very good work." With the aid of his able assistant, Mrs. De Soto, he copes with the toothaches of animals large and small. His expertise is so great that his fortunate patients never feel any pain. Since he's a mouse, Doctor De Soto refuses to treat "dangerous" animals--that is, animals who have a taste for mice. But one day a fox shows up and begs for relief from the tooth that's killing him. How can the kindhearted De Sotos turn him away? But how can they make sure that the fox doesn't give in to his baser instincts once his tooth is fixed? Those clever De Sotos will find a way. William Steig's Doctor De Soto is a 1982 New York Times Book Review Notable Children's Book of the Year and Outstanding Book of the Year, a 1983 Boston Globe - Horn Book Awards Honor Book for Picture Books, and a 1983 Newbery Honor Book.

In this F book Doctor De Soto, an intelligent and superb dentist, works on patients of all sizes with the help of his wife. Although he has a strict policy to not treat animals dangerous to mice, he decides to help a Fox with a toothache. Doctor De Soto and his wife must outfox this sneaky fox, and the ending is truly a laughing feat! This Newberry winner would be an excellent IR for students that could be paired with an activity. #UCFLAE3414SP20

Kyleigh_J The publishers website has a great teachers guide with activities to go along with this book https://images.macmillan.com/folio-assets/teachers-guides/9780374418106TG.pdf UDL 8.3 foster collaboration and community is satisfied by these lesson plans as students are often working together as a class during the activities. EL 13 use preview/review strategies is satisfied as students will complete these activities after reading the book to review. 2d
LizzettM This book looks so cute! It would be a great way for students to interact and discuss the main idea of the story(: 2d

This Newberry F picture book tells the story of a mouse dentist that only helps animals that don‘t eat mice, but ends up helping a fox, who tries to trick him. He tricks the fox instead! This book would be perfect for RA! One UDL & EL strategy is 3.1, activate and supply background knowledge, and, 6, continually monitor students‘ comprehension. A link for extension activities: www.scholastic.com/browse/collateral.jsp?id=32413 #UCFLAE3414SP20

SequoiaC123 Before I read I would activate students‘ prior knowledge of going to the dentist! To monitor students, especially ELLs comprehension, I would ask open and closed ended questions about to text as I read it to them. 2d

I LOVE THIS BOOK. This F book tells the story of a mouse dentist who typically refuses to serve dangerous animals but takes pity on a fox with a severe toothache. It becomes apparent that the fox is trying to trick the dentist, so the dentist comes up with a plan. This book is so silly and I would love to tell it to my class! I think it would be most effectively in early elementary levels but could work for all grades. #ucflae3414sp18

devin.s This book could definitely be turned into an amazing RT. It is a Newbery award winner. Here‘s a link to a great discussion guide: http://www.scholastic.com/browse/collateral.jsp?id=32413 UDL: 1.1, 1.3, 21, 2.2, 3.1 ELL: 4, 20 2y

This F National Book award winner by William Steig would be a great book for a read aloud. Doctor De Soto is the best dentist around, at least for animals that don‘t eat mice. One day a fox shows up at his door and is asking for Doctor De Soto‘s help. He has a dilemma, does he take the risk and help the fox or does he send the fox on his way? This great read will definitely keep children entertained. #ucflae3414f17

KayleeC https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/doctor-de-soto... The UDL principle 3.1 activating prior knowledge along with ESOL 14 Simplify your speech by making it slower and redundant could be met by this book. 2y
DrSpalding Be sure to look at your image. This is also a Newbery honor selection. Excellent resource. You can‘t go wrong with Scholastic. 2y

Very cute and entertaining! Teacher resource: http://www.scholastic.com/browse/collateral.jsp?id=32413 #UCFLAE3414sp17

CaraM This is a really cute animal fantasy and will be great for young students when reading aloud. 3y
DrSpalding Scholastic is a high-quality resource and Steig is a classic author. This is one of the rare picture books that won the Newbery! Good choice. 3y

As a Newbery Honor winner, this fable is about a mouse dentist that treats animals of all sizes! However, he does not treat animals dangerous to mice, until a fox shows up at his door one day and he takes a chance. This is a great book to teach fables and problem solving while keeping it fun for young children in a cute and funny story. DrSpalding Scholastic is a quality resource and the BDA reading recommendations are effective. Steig is also responsible for the character we know as SHREK!🙂 3y
HayleeM I love the resource you gave. Asking students those questions will help them make connections to the book and be engaged during the reading. Problem solving is very important at their age because they need to be able to solve a problem without getting upset. 3y

#24in48 - Our first book. A favorite of ours. We've read it about 332 times, and it never loses its appeal. Clever. Great words like "bicuspid" throughout. Mice out-foxing their predator. Awesome start to the readathon.

readinginthedark I used to read that one! Love it! And what a sweet picture! 4y
