On this day in the tagged book. You can take comfort that uncomfortable conversations over #holiday dinners have a long history.

This is a fun companion volume to the PBS series (which I did not watch). It has a page spread for each of the 100 novels they chose, with pictures on one side and text about the novel, author, etc on the other. Interspersed are pages of bookish info, like covers, pictured here. I really enjoyed slowly reading this.

I love @4thhouseontheleft ‘s idea of making a list of all the books you wish you‘d got to in 2019 from your TBR mountain, and creating a #2020TBR ......
I‘ve created a bookshelf on goodreads with 52 books (one a week) as an optimistic TBR for next year 🤞😊💕📚Lets see how that goes! 😂

4thhouseontheleft Love it!! 3w
JennyM SOooo much goodness there!!! Hope you‘re doing ok my lovely. Been thinking of you 😘😘 (edited) 3w
BarbaraBB So many good ones here! But what about the books you‘re going to buy/borrow in 2020 😉😘? 3w

CarolynM Some great titles there! I loved 3w
KarenUK @barbarabb That‘s why it‘s only 52! I read about 100 books a year, so I‘m allowing for about the same number for books that I shouldn‘t be buying when I have so much else to read!!!! 😂📚📚 3w
KarenUK @CarolynM it‘s been on my #TBR forever!!! 3w
KarenUK @jennyM thank you sweet friend 💕😘 3w
BarbaraBB That IS smart! I have yo think about that too! 3w

I just found the coolest website. It‘s got thousands of lists on a variety of topics . You can go through their book lists, click on the ones you‘ve read, and it‘ll give you a percentage s ore at the ends for how many off the list you‘ve read. It‘s also great if you need new ideas for a good book !
On the left corner, it tells how many have done it today, right is how many books in the list.

IamIamIam OMIGOSH, I bookmarked this for later. You're such an enabler!!! 🤣❤😘 1mo

ljuliel They‘re really neat, as it sorta “ grades” you at the end by showing you how well you did. You can also save all the ones you‘ve done. I‘m still wondering what you get the gold star for , unless it gives you a gold star for first book you mark ? It‘s pretty fun to look through the lists. I think you can also make your own list to add. I just found it so I‘m still fiddling with it. @IamIamIam @BlameJennyJane (edited) 1mo

A thoroughly enjoyable review of hundreds of opening lines, or paragraphs, from novels of fiction. It was fun to read this over time for a short while each day. It‘s given me much to add to my TBR list!

A fictionalized account of the author's childhood in the transitional period where the Tuvan people started being regulated by Mongolian governments (taxing for wool and forcing children to go to school.) It was interesting to read about the nomadic patterns, community units, sensory communication (using smell in particular!) and living in extreme conditions. ⤵️

ReadingEnvy There are hints of the author's future as a shaman by the end of the book, and apparently this is the first book of a longer series.
I'm counting this for Mongolia for my #re_asia2019 project but technically the Tuvan people are not Mongolian.

Molly_the_mezzo All I know about the Tuvan people is throat singing, which I learned about in music school and is seriously cool 2mo
ReadingEnvy @Molly_the_mezzo totally, me too. I learned a lot more about them in this book. 2mo

It's a huge novel of speculative fiction where magic is science, there's the re-defining of what it is to be, humanity as a construct, and a healthy dose of philosophy and literary allusions. Fans of Lev Grossman's The Magicians will love this, which makes sense as it was he who encouraged this to be translated from the Ukrainian into English. This is the first novel in the Метаморфозы series. Highly recommended!

Super nerdy bookish trivia.... i.e. perfect for me! 🤓

From David Bowie‘s 100 most influential books, to the books Oscar Wilde had in his jail cell, to Bin Laden‘s bookshelf discovered by Navy Seals, to the most picked Desert Island Disc Books.... each list is accompanied by a description of its source. A really fun little nerd fest of a book...

keithmalek I've been wanting to read this, but without getting it online, I can't seem to find it (neither libraries or stores). 2mo
KarenUK @Keithmalek I had to order it from my local store... (I also work there!) 2mo
Nute I go for nerdy books like this too!💕 2mo
