My January (tracked) reading. I'm chipping away at my backlog of modern children's books (I try to know what's out there to gift to friends' kids and also for fast URC solutions haha). The only book here I DO NOT recommend is “A River's Gifts“. It plays fast and loose with facts and assumes children are too stupid for nuance. It's also not written by Klallam people and it shows. The two queer romances are both @willaful's fault, thank you. ❤
This is a book that shows how important one‘s culture is and how everyone comes together to have fun. The author says, “I love the concept of play: everyone cheering together, forgetting about whatever challenges life can bring,” I think this is beautiful and really comes through in the illustrations.
pickThis book is beautiful! I love the cultural significance of using actual Creole words/ phrases and showing the English translations. The illustrations beautifully show the village where this children live. It really shows how something simple like futbol can really bring a village together. I also love how even though there‘s rain, the illustrations show them having the best time together no matter what conditions they‘re in!
pickI don‘t read a lot of poetry, but I found this one pretty enjoyable. Some travel involved (Walcott was from Saint Lucia, and these poems feature the Caribbean, Italy, Spain, and the U.S, among others), nothing wild or crazy. They‘re deceptively short and simple, but it was nice to linger on some of them. #52Books23 #byaCaribbeanauthor
A charming story about a young girl who doesn‘t want to miss Carnival in Saint Lucia. Beautiful illustrations!

pickI‘m not a huge fan of poetry but enjoyed this book, I think because they weren‘t too ‘odd‘.

Many of the poems are set in the Caribbean, but we also visit France, Amsterdam, the US and Italy, as in the poem above that compares summer on Saint Lucia and in Italy.
I‘ve managed to do another #quadrupledip with this one ⬇️ although I‘m sure I won‘t be that lucky going forward!😁
so-soPretty decent. The story was really good but The documentary stuff kinda got long. But it was a good twist and turn book. The ending surprised me for sure. Was not at all what I was expecting when I picked up the book.
