Station Eleven: A novel | Emily St. John Mandel

You guys, I really liked this one! It wasn‘t at all what I was expecting. I loved how it came together in the end, but I do wish she had given me a little more on The Prophet. Still, I loved the appreciation for the arts (theater, writing, fine arts, comics), and it felt grounded and realistic. Not otherworldly at all. I don‘t know why I waited so long to read it. Can‘t wait for The Glass House now. #emilystjohnmandel #stationeleven #theglasshosue

ElaineR Well this sounds rather timely! Hadn't heard of it but sounds interesting. 1w

Arthur Leander, Hollywood actor, had a heart attack during a production of King Lear. A flu pandemic arrives and civilization as we know it comes to an end. Kirsten Raymonde and The Traveling Sympathy dedicate themselves to keeping the remnants of art and humanity alive. They encounter a violent prophet who will threaten the band‘s existence. Post apocalyptic book and not in my comfort zone and there didn't seem to be much point of the story.

readingjedi I didn't really feel this one either 🤷🏼‍♀️ 2mo
kricheal Thank you for writing this review! I read this three(?) years ago and everyone was giving it RAVE reviews and I still don't understand what was so great about it. I'm glad I'm not the only one! 2mo
EadieB @kricheal Your welcome! I listened to audio as it was marked as one of the best books of the year. Afterward, I said, “What the heck was that all about?” Different strokes for different folks, I guess! We don‘t all have to like it just because others said it was good! @readingjedi (edited) 2mo

For a #postapocalyptic novel, the plot of #StationEleven felt fresh. It focused less on the horrors of the new world and more on the beauty, tenderness, and interconnectedness of #humanity. I often considered how I'd feel in similar circumstances (both before and after the Flu). I loved that it was largely set along #LakeMichigan and in an #airport! Highly recommend to anyone who enjoys this genre. #airplanes #pandemic #fiction #fame #survival

Justifying today's #bookhaul by pointing out that these are all generally short books and are therefore equivalent to having only purchased one, maybe two, long books. Fair, right? 📚📚😆😆 I think I will start with The Secret Life of Bees!

It‘s is a good book but it does not keep your up on your toes or is scary. Reading the news everyday is more terrifying than a book ever could be.

Good book! The plot develops on the background of the destruction of the world, but focused on the people and their hopes, and not on the hardships of the new world! "Survival is insufficient" #stationeleven #PostApocalypticFiction

I know I'm in the minority here but I really couldn't get into this book. In a post apocalyptic world, a group of travelling musicians and actors wasn't enough to keep my gripped or engaged. Not awful, but with too much going on and not enough attention paid to characters and crucial plot points, "Station Eleven" is getting 2 stars from me.

My full review is avaliable on my blog ? #stationeleven #emilystjohnmandel

Reviewsbylola I loved this but my husband felt similarly to you. He bailed. 2y
Aimeesue I finished it, but wasn‘t thrilled with it, tbh. Russell Hoban‘s Riddley Walker did the same theme 1000x better, though the language took some getting used to. 2y
Vertabrain I agree completely...I bailed on this halfway through, and was then forced to read another of her books (Last Night in Montreal) for an MFA class, and had fantasies about throwing it off a bridge, driving over it with my car, lighting it on fire...(you get the idea)...😝 2y
