Mehso-so

An enjoyable short read. I was expecting a little more in regards to the structure of the Soviet Union‘s meteorological network and the work they did. It was less about that and more focused on the life in prison and brutality the meteorologist, Alexey Feodosievich, had to endure as a review on the horrors of the Great Terror. Paragraphs often hop in time which confused at times, but an overall good read for those interested.

Book number 4. Wow. I‘ve had this sitting on my shelf for nearly a year. I picked it up and read it in one sitting. Sepetys is an incredible historical fiction author and you can feel her character‘s thoughts and emotions bleed of the page. A part of history not often talked about but so important. 8/10

Fun fact: My Dad's an ex-history teacher who taught this period, so I asked him for some recommendations for us. There were others he mentioned but he said Robert Harris within a couple of seconds of me asking, so these alternate histories should be good!

Cuilin They look great!! Thanks Jenny. 💕 7mo
Ruthiella I‘ve read Fatherland and Enigma and enjoyed them both. 👍 7mo

I noticed that Jenny had written a review of Homesick, a book I recently finished. I decided to look at some of her other reviews and ran across this one from a year ago. It seems important to share it for those who might want to read more about Russia and their history with Ukraine. It also seems important to spend time remembering Jenny. I miss her.

Outstanding juvenile fiction about the Stalinist purges from the point of view of a 10-year-old who in the course of 24 hours, has his entire life and every belief he held turned upside down. https://cannonballread.com/2023/01/breaking-stalins-nose-elcicco/

I'm 70 pages in. I've read a fair bit about Stalin. For me the details about the Holodomor and Ukraine are new.

Sounds like it could be quite a politically based book, but intriguing enough to have piqued my interest being about Josef Stalin!
My 12 days of Christmas book advent number 9! 🙂

"Have you ever wondered what a human life is worth? That morning, my brother's was worth a pocket watch". This was not an easy book to read(or listen to), but it definitely is an important book to read. There are so many books about the atrocities of Hitler and the Nazis but so few books about the atrocities of Stalin during this time. Ruta Sepetys does a beautiful job of showing the humanity of Stalin's victims.

Ruta Sepetys‘ does a wonderful job of using flashbacks to carry the weight of giving the reader valuable insight into the main character's motivates, which made for an intriguing story that truly needed to be told of a forgotten people during World War II.
